100 years of Mother´s Day (in Austria)
The origins of Mother's Day in its current form can be traced back to the social movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the United States, the modern Mother´s Day movement began with activist Anna Jarvis, who created the holiday to honor the sacrifice of mothers and fight for peace.
In Austria, Mother´s Day was first celebrated in its current form exactly 100 years ago. A central figure in this development was Marianne Hainisch, an Austrian women´s rights activist and social reformer. Hainisch actively campaigned for the rights of women and children and recognized the importance of a special day to honour mothers. Inspired by international efforts to establish a Mother´s Day, she initiated the movement to introduce this holiday in Austria.
The first official celebration of Mother´s Day in Austria took place in 1924, and since then the second Sunday in May has been used every year as an occasion to show gratitude and appreciation to mothers. Mother´s Day quickly became an integral part of the Austrian calendar and developed into a popular occasion to celebrate and pamper mothers.
The following editions each feature at least one mother as a performer or band member:
5/11/85:
Alison Moyet - Invisible Eurythmics - Would I Lie To You ? (Annie Lennox) Patti LaBelle - New Attitude Madonna - Crazy For You Sade - Smooth Operator
10/24/87 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke):
Bananarama - I Heard A Rumour Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth Expose - Let Me Be The One Heart - Who Will You Run To Jody Watley - Don´t You Want Me
Time for an extra: Spice Girls
It is the Mother´s Day song par excellence. "Mama" by the British girl band "Spice Girls" was released in 1996 and is about the difficulties in the mother-daughter relationship, especially during childhood and adolescence. Looking back, the daughter realizes that her mother did everything she did out of love. The daughter, now an adult, is able to understand her mother´s actions. "Now, I see through your eyes". The song is one of the reasons for the Spice Girls´ great success.

While I really like or love 22 songs from the 5/15/76 countdown, these 7 are my absolute faves: Silly Love Songs, Fooled Around & Fell In Love, Love Hangover*, Shannon, Fool To Cry, More More More, I Want You
While I really like or love 20 songs from the 5/21/88 countdown, these 6 are my absolute faves: Naughty Girls (Need Love Too), Piano In The Dark, Circle In The Sand*, The Valley Road, Kiss Me Deadly, Beds Are Burning
Diana Ross and Belinda Carlisle get the nods for This Week's Pick Hits. I always feel a little shortchanged when I hear the single version of "Love Hangover" so the full version is below. Meanwhile, "Circle In The Sand" is the perfect length as it is.

5/21/88:Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me Foreigner - I Don´t Want To Live Without YouGlass Tiger - I´m Still Searching Paul Carrack - One Good Reason Times Two - Strange But True A special show for Whit Monday (5/20/2024): 7/17/82 (guest-host: Mark Elliott):Chicago - Hard To Say I´m SorryFleetwood Mac - Hold Me Juice Newton - Love´s Been A Little Bit Hard On Me Kim Wilde - Kids In America The Rolling Stones - Going To A Go-Go Whitsun
In 1770, James Cook and his "Endeavour" crew reached Australian soil - the navigator named the Whitsunday Islands after the day of discovery, but he made a small mistake. He thought he had reached the islands on Whit Sunday, 6/3/1770, and named the region " Whitsundays". A mistake, as the ingenious navigator ignored the international dateline in his calculations. It was already Whit Monday, 6/4/1770. Nevertheless, the islands still bear the name " Whitsunday Islands" to this day. James Cook enjoyed the tranquil area on his tall ship "Endeavour". He wrote in his logbook about the reef-protected area that it was "as if I were sailing in a safe harbor". This has not changed to this day - the " Whitsundays" are an ideal sailing area. And here are my " dreamy" editions of the week: 5/21/88:Belinda Carlisle - Circle In The Sand Cheap Trick - The Flame Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - Anything For YouIcehouse - Electric Blue Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Dreaming 7/17/82 (guest-host: Mark Elliott):Crosby, Stills & Nash - Wasted On The WayGo-Go´s - Vacation Paul McCartney - Take It Away Ronnie Milsap - Any Day NowWillie Nelson - Always On My MindTime for an extra: Orchestral Manoeuvres In The DarkPaul Humphreys, Andy McCluskey and Paul Collister founded OMD - or Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, as the band´s full name is - in Liverpool in 1978. Just two years later, their hit single "Enola Gay" made it into the upper regions of the charts. As with many bands of the time, OMD´s roots lie in the "do it yourself" mentality that punk had unleashed. Humphreys and McClusky, who had been playing together since their school days, also bounced from one band to the next in search of the big hit until they joined forces. The surprising success of "Electricity" led to the self-titled debut album in 1980 and "Organization" with the hit "Enola Gay" in the same year. At this time, McCluskey and Humphreys crystallized as the creative engines of OMD and surrounded themselves with a rotating cast of willing collaborators. The duo´s synthetic ballads hit the nerve of the times and became OMD´s trademark over the years, such as the waltz-infused "Maid Of Orleans" or the almost theatrically performed "Forever Live And Die". The album "The Pacific Age" from 1986 marked a caesura, as a result of which Humphreys turned his back on OMD. After a five-year break, McCluskey put his energy into a comeback attempt and the singles "Sailing On The Seven Seas" and "Pandora´s Box" from the album "Sugar Tax" led OMD back into the charts. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

I don't think a month of May has gone by in 51 years without me thinking of My Love, especially once the trees fill in and it's a breezy day. It just seems to be a perfect hit song for that beautiful scene. The man knows how to write a catchy tune.

The Salzburg Dult
The Salzburg Dult - by its own account the largest folk festival in western Austria - is expecting another big crowd this year. Last year, around 190,000 visitors attended. The popular term "Dult" describes the toleration or condoning of a market, fair or folk festival by the church or the sovereign in connection with the religious festival. As a result of this tradition, the church consecration festival arose on the name days of saints, and the meaning of "Dult" increasingly shifted to "fair" with an emphasis on the folk festival character.
In the past, two Salzburg markets - one in spring and one in fall - were referred to as "Dult". Today, however, this term is only used for the spring fair. In 1974, the fair known today as the "Salzburger Dult" was established on the grounds of the Salzburg Exhibition Center in Liefering. In 1977, the tradition of the original autumn date was revived and a "Salzburger Rupertikirtag" was organized around 9/24. In contrast to the spring fair, however, the "Rupertikirtag" was to stick to the historical model in typical fairground style and thus form the antithesis to the modern business fair in Liefering.
And here´s my "Dult"-edition of the week:
5/24/86:
Boys Don´t Cry - I Wanna Be A Cowboy Culture Club - Move Away El DeBarge - Who´s Johnny Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy The Rolling Stones - Harlem Shuffle
Time for an extra: Animotion
"I Engineer" by Animotion is about taking control of one´s own destiny, and being independent and strong-willed. It´s a call to action to rise above the chaos and confusion to create something new and different. And it´s an anthem of self-determination and self-confidence, urging the listener to break the rules and make their own path in life, rather than relying on others. "I Engineer" emphasizes that one must take the lead and take control of his own decisions, rather than following others blindly. Ultimately, the song is about standing up for yourself and taking control of your own life, making changes, and forging your own path.
