10/22/83:Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Everyday I Write The Book Frank Stallone - Far From Over Jackson Browne - Tender Is The Night Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - Everyday People Spandau Ballet - True
10/26 is a bank holiday in Austria, so, I have selected a special show as a bonus:
12/5/87 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke):Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth Cutting Crew - I´ve Been In Love BeforePoison - I Won´t Forget You Richard Marx - Should´ve Known Better Yes - Love Will Find A Way Austria´s thickest "photo album"Austria´s turbulent history from the monarchy to the present has been immortalized in millions of photographs. These are kept in the picture archive and graphic collection of the Austrian National Library (ÖNB), the "pictorial memory of the Republic". Today, it is easier than ever to plunge into the flood of images of history there - and to find the undiscovered. The institution on Vienna´s Heldenplatz takes care of the life´s works of important Austrian photographers, some of which were taken under extraordinary circumstances. With their photographs, they have preserved sections of yesterday´s world in perpetuity, shaped the image of Austria, and not infrequently interwove their own biographies with politics and sometimes even helped to determine it. We still encounter their works today, in films, documentaries and books, in schools and universities, exhibitions and the media. If you want to explore Austria´s (visual) history, there is no way around the picture archive and graphics collection. The stores contain "more than three million visual objects, including at least two and a half million photographs, negative films, glass plates, vintage prints and historical prints," says Bildarchiv and Grafiksammlungsdirektor Hans Petschar to ORF.at. They are stored there in digital and analog form and made available to the public and researchers. Jubilant people at the signing of the State Treaty. Erich Lessing, ÖNB, 1955.
The scope of the collection is enormous, ranging from masterpieces of graphic art and prints to the early days of photography. This is due in part to the Habsburg Court Library and the private library of the ruling dynasty of the time. They collected remarkable photographs of city life, everyday life and architecture in various corners of the monarchy, as well as thousands of portraits of the imperial family. Elisabeth, Empress of Austria. Ludwig Angerer, ÖNB, 1860 The collection is aimed primarily at the general public. For those who can´t or don´t want to do their own research on Heldenplatz, digitization will be a boon. During the pandemic, the archive gave its online portal a makeover. Some 1.2 million digital objects can be accessed in the ÖNB´s Digital Reading Room and 400,000 images in the "Bildarchiv Austria" image portal. This makes it easier than ever to browse the "photo album of the republic" from the comfort of your couch ( onb.wg.picturemaxx.com/). And here are my " joy"-editions: 10/22/83:Billy Joel - Uptown Girl David Bowie - Modern Love Huey Lewis & The News - Heart And Soul Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance Taco - Puttin´ On The Ritz 12/5/87 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke):Fleetwood Mac - Little Lies New Order - True Faith Steve Winwood - Valerie Swing Out Sister - Breakout Tiffany - I Think We´re Alone Now Time for an extra: Falco10/26 is National Day in Austria. Traditionally, recruits are sworn in at Heldenplatz in Vienna and wreaths are laid. It celebrates the enactment of the Neutrality Decree of the Federal Constitutional Law. The Austrian flag should also be hoisted on this day, which is why it was known as "Flag Day" for a long time. In addition to the traditional show of achievements, several museums entice visitors to marvel at art with discounted admission. For the first time since the start of the pandemic, Parliament is hosting a live rather than virtual Open House. And Falco has the right title: "Vienna Calling" from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

The multi-billionaire, owner of numerous sports teams and media entrepreneur died at the age of 78, the group announced a few days ago. The richest Austrian, he not only helped the energy drink gain worldwide popularity, but built a sports, media, real estate and restaurant empire around his group. "In these moments, sadness covers all other feelings. But soon, grief will give way to gratitude for what he changed, moved, accomplished and made possible for so many people," Red Bull wrote in a message sent to all employees. "It is the task and responsibility of all of us to continue his life's work in his spirit." Politicians paid tribute to Mateschitz´s entrepreneurial skills and his commitment to sports. " Dietrich Mateschitz built up a globally renowned and successful company from Austria, but with him a great supporter of domestic top and extreme sports has also passed away. Mateschitz shaped Austria´s corporate and sports landscape like few others in our country," said Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. "Styria is losing one of its greatest sons, who was highly successful internationally and yet always loyal to his homeland until the end," said Styrian Governor Christopher Drexler (ÖVP) about Mateschitz, who was born in St. Marein im Mürztal. Initially, Mateschitz mainly supported young, daring individual athletes, before also focusing on sports that were established in Austria, such as ice hockey, alpine skiing and ski jumping. In Formula 1, the company was first a co-owner of Sauber, and the big internationalization step came with the purchase of Jaguar and the transformation into Red Bull Racing. At the latest since the four world championship titles in a row (Constructors´ and Drivers´ World Championships respectively) between 2010 and 2013, the Red Bull can has been known in every corner of the world. Mateschitz was considered a benefactor and is co-founder of the "Wings for Life" foundation, which aims to make paraplegia curable. And he donated 70 million euros to Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU) in Salzburg for a research center on spinal cord injuries - one of the largest donations ever made by a private individual to a university in Europe. Here are my " All Souls´ Day"-editions: 10/31/81 (A):Al Jarreau - We´re In This Love Together Barry Manilow - The Old Songs Billy Joel - Say Goodbye To Hollywood Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like You Mike Post - The Theme From "Hillstreet Blues"10/27/84 (B):Dennis DeYoung - Desert Moon John Waite - Missing You Kenny Rogers, Kim Carnes & James Ingram - What About Me ? 11/9/85: Billy Joel - The Night Is Still YoungBryan Adams - One Night Love Affair Freddie Jackson - You Are My LadyScritti Politti - Perfect Way Tina Turner - One Of The Living A mobile tailoring workshop"The way is made by walking" is the motto under which a young tailor from Schleedorf (Salzburg) sets off for Africa. He converted a van into a mobile workshop and wants to set off in a few days. The time horizon: the next ten years. Vinzenz Wimmer is 25 years old - a journeyman tailor - and soon to be a globetrotter. The young tailor wants to practice his craft in a van he has converted himself - with a sewing machine, ironing board and sleeping facilities. Vinzenz Wimmer will first travel to Morocco via Spain and Portugal: That is the first target for the young tailor. Vinzenz describes his motivation as follows: "I´m a trained tailor from my parents´ house. But I just want to develop as an artist - and then I can realize my own ideas, implement what comes to mind, and develop myself. And Africa is simply exciting: there are lots of cool fabrics and certainly lots of cool people who are still involved in the craft." The mobile tailor´s workshop is tailor-made - for example, the chair is a former personal chair from a flea market that a friend of Vinzenz Wimmer converted to make it as versatile as possible: for example, the backrest and also the seat cushion are removable. The free spirit is thus building a completely new life for himself - encounters with other cultures, other ways of life and people are particularly important to him: "Everyone has something great to tell. And you can learn something from everyone," Wimmer is convinced. The 25-year-old also simply wants to be out and about: "When you´re traveling, you look back on a week and think to yourself: those were experiences for a month or three," says Vinzenz Wimmer. "That´s where I´m going to have a whole lot of experiences - and that´s going to take me somewhere I don´t even know where yet. I trust that it will be even better than I can imagine." In a few days, there will be a big farewell party and then it´s time to go: But certainly not without serving up her favorite dish for the last time: "If I can still get plums somewhere, then I´ll make plum doughnuts. That´s my favorite dish." And here´s my " worldwide well known"-edition: 11/9/85:A-Ha - Take On Me David Foster - Love Theme From St. Elmo´s Fire Jan Hammer - Miamai Vice Theme Lionel Richie - Say You, Say Me Starship - We Built This City
Time for an extra: The Les Humphries SingersThe Les Humphries Singers was a 1970s musical group formed in Hamburg, Germany in 1969 by the English born Les Humphries, who had been inspired to do his own version of the Edwin Hawkins Singers. The group consisted of a large number of singers of diverse ethnic origin, some of whom such as John Lawton also performed with other groups. Another member was Jürgen Drews, who later started a long-running solo career, starting with his 1976 hit, "Ein Bett im Kornfeld", a cover version of "Let Your Love Flow" by the Bellamy Brothers. Linda Thompson, who had previously been a member of the Cornely Singers and Love Generation, was a member from 1973 to 1974, and later joined Silver Convention, and had a solo career as Linda G. Thompson, sang as a duo with Jerry Rix, and later joined The Hornettes. Additional members included Liz Mitchell, later front woman with Boney M., and John Lawton, who also sang for the German progressive/hard rock band Lucifer´s Friend and would go on to be the frontman for Uriah Heep. The Les Humphries Singers dissolved at the end of the 1970s, after Humphries had left due to tax liabilities to his English homeland, Alton, Hampshire. From 1975, here are The Les Humphries Singers with "Top Szene Hamburg": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

I grew up listening to the Herb Alpert & TJB albums my Dad brought home in the 60s, and it was so cool for me to introduce him in 1979 to Herb's new hit record. And "Rise" still sounds every bit as good to me now as it did 43 years ago.

You know you have a great track when one can strip the words from "Freddie's Dead" and still have an awesome record! If you have never heard the instrumental version of "Freddie's Dead", hear it is:

11/20/82:ABC - The Look Of Love Chicago - Love Me Tomorrow Glenn Frey - The One You LoveMen At Work - Who Can It Be Now Supertramp - It´s Raining Again A Global JukeboxExperts have created a publicly available " Global Jukebox" of nearly 6,000 traditional songs. They came from more than 1,000 societies all over the world. Clicking online on the " Global Jukebox" map ( theglobaljukebox.org/), songs can be selected and listened to at various locations around the world. Many of the recordings were collected and cataloged by ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax, who died in 2002. The database is to be constantly improved and supplemented, reports a team around Anna Wood of the Hunter College in New York just in the on-line specialized journal "Plos". On this basis, other experts should be able to conduct further research on cultural and musical traditions and developments. The songs in this week´s " jukebox"-edition are also likely to be known globally: 11/20/82:Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes - Up Where We BelongMarvin Gaye - Sexual HealingPaul McCartney & Michael Jackson - The Girl Is MineThe Pointer Sisters - I´m So Excited Toto - Africa Time for an extra: Wishful ThinkingNames like Roy Daniels, Terry New, Roger Charles and Brian Allen mean little even to good music journalists on first hearing. If anything, it usually takes a few minutes before the hesitant inquiry comes, "Wasn´t that that British band that had that one hit back in the day ?" - Correct ! It´s true that in 1973, under their band name " Wishful Thinking," the guys were involved in the soundtrack to the British musical film "That´ll Be The Day," which featured stars like David Essex and ex-Beatle Ringo Starr. But otherwise, the band is known only for one song: Hiroshima. A sad, moving song with a terrible theme: because, as the name suggests, it´s about the dropping of an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. A song that originally, in 1971, appeared as a single B-side, flopped in England. But seven years later, "Hiroshima" managed a top ten ranking in Germany - and the song stayed in the charts for almost a year. A song that wants to make clear: Weapons of mass destruction may not be used. Human life is inviolable. In the song this happens in an impressive way: There is still a spoken text, quoted by producer Lou Reizner. A terrible message, to which nothing more can be added. Maybe just the song: Hiroshima by Wishful Thinking: from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

Under the motto "9 federal states, 9 days, 9 teams: 24 hours for a good cause", a total of 54 celebrities and professional athletes were once again involved in the fundraising campaign for Licht ins Dunkel. In 2021, more than 7,500 kilometers were cycled in the preliminary competitions and just under 2,500 kilometers in the final. The donation of 230,000 euros raised in the preliminary rounds was doubled to 460,000 euros by the two main donors. Finally, PlusCity managing director Ernst Kirchmayr added another 40,000 euros, so that a total donation of 500,000 euros could be handed over for Licht ins Dunkel. And here´s my sporty " power"-edition: 11/22/86:Bon Jovi - You Give Love A Bad Name Huey Lewis & The News - Hip To Be Square Kool & The Gang - Victory Talking Heads - Wild Wild Life Tina Turner - Typical Male Time for an extra: Eddy GrantEddy Grant was born in 1948 in Plaisance in what was then the colony of British Guyana, located in the north of the South American continent. In 1960, his parents - like many others - emigrate to England. For 12-year-old Eddy, the move from subtropical climes to dank London is a cultural shock. But in the swinging London of the early 1960s, Grant's musical horizons quickly expand, and his characteristic blend of the sounds of his Caribbean homeland and British pop and rock music, strongly influenced by Rhythm´n´Blues, originates here. Eddy Grant also has another formative experience as a teenager in London: like many other immigrant families from the British colonies, Eddy very quickly learns what it means to be a second-class citizen and to be racially hostile. Thus, the founding of Eddy Grant´s first band in 1965 is more or less a first political statement. Besides Eddy, the band consisted of two Jamaican twins and two real Englishmen and consequently called themselves "The Equals". But the England of the 1960s is not yet ready for such a multicultural troupe and the DJs demonstratively break the successful single "Baby Come Back" while they are live on air. From these experiences, Eddy Grant repeatedly addresses social grievances, and here especially discrimination against ethnic minorities. The song "Electric Avenue" was written in 1982 under the impression of the Brixton Riots, when the Afro-Caribbean population living there experienced a growing lack of prospects, high unemployment, poverty and arbitrary police violence that led to violent protests. In 1988, Eddy Grant wrote his indictment of the South African apartheid regime with "Gimme Hope, Jo´anna." Since the middle of the 20th century, apartheid laws had existed in South Africa that oppressed the African majority of the population in favor of the white minority. Nelson Mandela became the symbolic figure of the anti-apartheid movement in the 1960s, serving a total of 27 years in prison, and without whom the regime of injustice might still exist. Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He was the country´s first black president from 1994 to 1999. Mandela is not mentioned by name in the lyrics of "Gimme Hope, Jo´anna," but Bishop Desmond Tutu is. Tutu was a prominent spokesman for the rights of the African majority and was very influential and influential in winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. The song lyrics also refer to the Soweto Uprising of 1976, in which a total of almost 600 people died and many thousands were injured. The riots in Johannesburg´s South Western Township ("SoWeTo") were preceded by a government decision to impose Afrikaans, which originated with the Burmese Conolists and was seen as a symbol of oppressive whites, as the language of instruction for African students in secondary schools. Since they did not speak this language, or hardly spoke it at all, and therefore considered the decision discriminatory, there were student protests, which were bloodily put down by the police and then spread in the following days and weeks. At the end of the song, the turn of the times is already predicted. In fact, the apartheid regime was on the verge of collapse due to international pressure, sanctions and the increasingly strong internal resistance, which then also happened two years after the release of "Gimme Hope, Jo´anna". Even the ban on the song in South Africa was of no use, especially since it spread quickly and became an anthem of resistance. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
