And on 1/6 we have another holiday here in Austria - a holiday which usually means the end of the Christmas holidays. Another holiday - another show, this time from 1/9/88: 1/9/88 (guest-host: Charlie Van Dyke):Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere New Order - True Faith Pet Shop Boys & Dusty Springfield - What Have I Done To Deserve This ? The Cure - Just Like Heaven Tiffany - Could´ve BeenAn Austrian extra: Mr. Rockin´ 50´sHis mother came from Gmünd (Lower Austria) and studied both piano and singing. As a piano teacher she also gave numerous classical concerts with great success. The father, a Viennese, was a trained violinist and played with the famous "Schrammeln" as well as with numerous wine taverns. Together, the Weiler parents had dedicated themselves to music and it was in this atmosphere that their son Fritz was born on 11/10/1943 in Linz (Upper Austria). At home a lot of operettas and Viennese songs were played, so it was actually obvious that Fritz had to learn classical piano from 1956/57. His joy was actually limited for the time being. It was only when he became known for rock´n´roll via the American radio station AFN Munich that he became more enthusiastic about the piano. Fascinated by the rhythm of Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis and above all Eddie Cochran, he began to practice boogie like crazy. Relatives and classmates were enthusiastic about his talent and so the first band was founded in 1959. The "Real Collage Band" worked at almost all parties in the Linz area and organized the greatest parties, the "come and move" parties. For these purposes Fritz was given the stage name Teddy Weiler. As such, he soon switched to a Linz amateur band, "The Fenders", as a singer. This was followed by guest appearances in the Rosenstüberl, the Mecca of the Linz scene in the 1950s. Although the group´s awareness and popularity rose rapidly, Fritz still found time to graduate in Linz in 1961. He then began his studies at the University of World Trade and also had numerous part-time jobs, such as babysitting, waiter, cheese seller, newspaper delivery, etc. With the Fenders, Fritz made appearances in Budweis, Prague and Vienna. The manager of a club in Nuremberg was so enthusiastic about the group that he offered the band a professional contract and wanted to bring the band to America. The tickets to Chicago were already on the table and the dream of fame and money may be within the grasp. Excitement in the group. The day before departure, the friends of all band members came together and had a "hot" night, at the end of which the musicians vote whether they want to accept the offer or not. The influence of the girlfriends had an impact and the vote ended 3 to 2 against the US. Fritz took this decision against Chicago and for his Edith very seriously and ended his musical dreams. In 1976, unsuspecting, he went for a beer in Linz and met his old friends from the Rosenstüberl. They started to chat and it turned out that the former colleagues "by chance" have been playing and practicing a little in a garage for a few weeks now. A few days later, Fritz stopped by the garage in question - and stayed. They continued to play and practiced together and let a tape run along. Rather for fun, they sent a demo to Ö3 and a few days later Rudi Klausnitzer answered and said that the voice is "absolutely worth hearing". He couldn´t do anything himself, but he sent the tape to Ariola. With his band, the "Rockin´ Fifties" (Peter Guschelbauer, Günter Joham, Reinhard Pichler, Günther Postl, Freddie Stex and Friedrich Zauner), Fritz Weiler covered numerous hits by the rock´n´roll superstars and also produced many of his own songs. And so over the years he can look back on a considerable list of successful record productions that many professional musicians envy him for. There are also appearances with Carl Perkins, Wanda Jackson, twice Fats Domino, Sleepy LaBeef, The "Original Comets" by Bill Haley and The Supremes. In 1984 Fritz Weiler recorded the song "Let´s Think About Living" as " Mr. Rockin´ 50´s":

1/19/80 (A):Santana - You Know That I Love You The Dirt Band - An American Dream The Eagles - The Long RunTom Johnston - Savannah Nights Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Dont´ Do Me Like That 1/19/85 (B):Bryan Adams - Run To You Chicago - You´re The InspirationCyndi Lauper - Money Changes Everything Daryl Hall & John Oates - Method Of Modern Love Steve Perry - Foolish Heart "Last week or first week" or "More days but fewer weeks"2016 was a leap year and had 52 weeks, 2015 was not a leap year and had 53 weeks ... Every "normal year" - i.e. no leap year - has 365 days, that is 52 weeks and one day. On 12/30 of a "normal year", therefore, exactly 52 weeks have passed, so that New Year´s Eve falls on the same day of the week as New Year´s Day. The week used to start on Sunday - Wednesday was therefore the fourth day of the week and was right "in the middle". Based on a recommendation by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the week has started on Monday in Europe and most countries in the rest of the world (but not in the USA) since 1976. Since then, Thursday has been the actual "Wednesday". Because the "normal year" and the leap year are one day or two days longer than 52 weeks, a 53rd week must be added every five to six years. According to ISO 8601, the criterion as to whether or not a "partial" week is counted at the beginning of the year is Thursday. Because the part of the week, which contains Thursday, is at least one day longer than the rest of the week. 2015 started on a Thursday and ended on a Thursday, so 2015 had 53 weeks. 2016 started on a Friday and ended on a Saturday, so 2016 - although a leap year - only had 52 weeks. In short, if a year begins with a Thursday or ends with a Thursday, it always has 53 weeks. And here are my " last week or first week"-editions: 1/19/80 (A):Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer - No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) Dan Fogelberg - Longer Styx - BabeStyx - Why Me The Commodores - Still1/19/85 (B):Bob Seger - UnderstandingDaryl Hall & John Oates - Out Of Touch Glenn Frey - The Heat Is On John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band - Tender YearsJohn Fogerty - The Old Man Down The Road Time for an extra: Suzi QuatroThe extras are going international - and we´re starting in Detroit. At the turn of the year 1979/80, Suzi Quatro had a hit with "She´s In Love With You". The song peaked at #41 on 1/19/80 and 1/26/80 and fell down to #97 on 2/2/80. The following video is from the ZDF program "disco" on 12/31/1979:

My Top 26 songs from the 1/21/84 countdown (absolute faves in bold):Top 10: Owner Of A Lonely Heart, Say Say Say, Talking In Your Sleep, I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues, Joanna, Running With The Night, Say It Isn't So #11-20: Union Of The Snake, That's All, Pink Houses, If I'd Been The One, Undercover Of The Night#21-30: Let The Music Play, All Night Long, An Innocent Man, Middle Of The Road, Yah Mo B There, Gold, Stay With Me Tonight#31-40: Wrapped Around Your Finger, 99 Luftballoons, Jump, Nobody Told Me, Send Me An Angel, In The Mood, Uptown Girl * The Pretenders get my 80s Shooda Dun Betr Pick this week. Gritty guitars + Chrissie Hynde's voice = one cool tune. Bonus points for an instrumental ending that ends somewhat abruptly, and more bonus points for Chrissie counting in the song (... 'cuz this is featured in a show where Casey counts ... even if Chrissie counts the opposite direction of Casey ): My Top 26 songs from the 1/17/76 countdown:Top 10: I Write The Songs, Do You Know Where You're Going To, Convoy, Love Rollercoaster, Fox On The Run, I Love Music, You Sexy Thing#11-20: Sing A Song, Rock & Roll All Night, 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, Evil Woman, Saturday Night, Love Machine, Over My Head #21-30: Love Hurts, Wake Up Everybody, That's The Way (I Like It), Theme From SWAT#31-40: Take It To The Limit, Hurricane*, For The Love Of You, Slow Ride, Golden Years, All By Myself, Fly Robin Fly, Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)* Bob Dylan gets my 70s Shooda Dun Betr Pick this week. This is one of my all-time favorite storytelling songs. Can you sometimes recall when you first heard a song in its entirety (full-length version)? I hadn't heard this song until 2003. I was driving in Amish Country in Ohio, picking up furniture. I had forgotten to bring some CDs in my SUV so my mom lent me her Bob Dylan greatest hits CD. I was entranced listening to "Hurricane". Are there a few inaccuracies in it? Sure. But I love the way he phrases certain lines ("We want to pin this triple mur...der... on him!"), I love the violin... this is an awesome song! How did this only get to #33?!?! If you have never listened to the full-length version, it's here for your listening pleasure : BONUS: In the 6 years of posting favorites, I don't think I have had five "absolute faves" kick off a countdown. That happens with 1/17/76. Fanny (Be Tender With My Love), Fly Robin Fly, All By Myself, Golden Years and Slow Ride... wow, what a great start to a countdown!

1/21/84: Barry Manilow - Read´em and weepJohn Lennon - Nobody Told Me Jump ´N The Saddle - The Curly Shuffle Matthew Wilder - Break My Stride Nena - 99 Luftballons Computing tricksIn the 80s thread there´s currently the following consideration: (1) Take your birth month number, and multiply it by 4. (2) Add 13 to your answer. (3) Multiply that by 25. (4) Subtract 200. (5) Now add the day of the month you were born. (6) Multiply by 2. (7) Subtract 40. (8) Multiply by 5,000. (9) Add the 4-digit year you were born. (10) Subtract 1,050,000. Now look at your answer. What do you see ? Now, why does this arithmetic trick work ? Here´s the explanation - combined with thanks to the distributive law of mathematics: We denote with d the number of the birthday, with m the number of the month of birth and with y the four-digit number of the year of birth. Then the following calculation steps apply: (1) 4*m (2) 4*m + 13 (3) 25*(4*m + 13) = 100*m + 325 (4) 100*m + 125 (5) 100*m + d + 125 (6) 2*(100*m + d + 125) = 200*m + 2*d + 250 (7) 200*m + 2*d + 210 (8) 5,000*(200*m + 2*d + 210) = 1,000,000*m + 10,000*d + 1,050,000 (9) 1,000,000*m + 10,000*d + 1,050,000 + y (10) 1,000,000*m + 10,000*d + y A multiplication by 10 shifts the decimal point one place to the right, therefore the multiplication with 10,000 respectively 1,000,000 shifts the decimal point by four respectively six places to the right. And that leads to the date of birth in the (American) format mmddyyyy. Exactly 5 numbers are at most 40 in this calculation trick, so here´s a special "2-4-13-25-40"-edition at this point (why do I think of a hit by the Tom Robinson Band at this point ? ): 1/21/84:Billy Joel - Uptown Girl (#40) John Cougar Mellencamp - Pink Houses (#13) Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson - Say Say Say (#2) The Pretenders - Middle Of The Road (#25) The Romantics - Talking In Your Sleep (#4) Time for an extra: MasqueradeWhen in 1990 a CD with the name "Hits ! Pseudonyms ! Rarities !" appeared, it was not only broadcast editors who rubbed their eyes at how many pseudonyms Drafi Deutscher "slipped" into their programs. Drafi Deutscher was also behind "Masquerade", in this case with his partner Christopher Ironside Evans. The two later founded the project "Mixed Emotions". As " Masquerade" they never appeared with an "open" face, but always only hidden behind masks. So you never knew whether they were performing live themselves or some doubles. Masquerade achieved their biggest hit in 1984 with "Guardian Angel":

"This is Casey Kasem in Hollywood on American Top 40, you know, it's become rather common over the past 15 or 20 years at rock concerts to see guitarists tossing their instruments around the stage, but this next group in the countdown features a man who throws a 20 pound, $2000 cello into the air, catching it, just before it hits the ground, it's all part of the act, the cello toss is performed by Hugh McDowell, he's a former member of the London Symphony Orchestra and currently 1/7th of The Electric Light Orchestra, a couple of years ago, the stunt backfired on him, the group was appearing in Houston, Texas and right in the middle of their last number, Hugh went into his cello hoisting routine, throwing the big instrument high into the air, but this time, he got so carried away by the response of the crowd, he forgot to catch the cello on its way down, and it crashed onto the stage in about a dozen pieces, well the audience loved it, and they thought it was part of the act, but Hugh wasn't so sure what to do, finally he, just picked up the pieces of his shattered cello, and tossed them into the crowd as souvenirs, we got the story from the group's drummer Bev Bevan who tells us that Hugh McDowell, is still tossing his cello around during their concerts believe it or not, but nowadays, he travels with a spare cello backstage, this week, their latest hit is at #17, The Electric Light Orchestra with, Livin' Thing"

1/29/83:A Flock Of Seagulls - Space Age Love Song Don Henley - Dirty Laundry Lionel Richie - You AreRay Parker Jr. - Bad Boy The Clash - Rock The Casbah 75 years of Austrian-American societyThe Austrian-American Society (ÖAG) is celebrating its 75th anniversary these days with a meeting in front of the Wiener Musikverein. The ÖAG has always set itself the goal of strengthening relations between the two countries and promoting intercultural exchange. "75 years of Austro-American society means 75 years of friendship," said the Austrian ambassador to the USA, Martin Weiss. "This friendship is based on a shared trust in a Western model of life and values." Robin Dunnigan, Chargé d´affaires at the US Embassy in Vienna, thanked the ÖAG for their "decades of efforts to promote mutual understanding between Austria and the United States of America". ÖAG President Philipp Bodzenta also saw parallels to the founding year 1946: "Like 1946, 2021 is the year after a drastic global event. Although the Covid-19 pandemic does not approach the dimensions of the Second World War, the effects remain noticeable for generations. " And this brings me to a danceable " celebration"-edition: 1/29/83:
Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes Christopher Cross - All Right
Michael Jackson - Billie Jean Phil Collins - You Can´t Hurry Love
The Stray Cats - Stray Cat Strut Time for an extra: Kid Creole & The CoconutsIn the early 80s, after punk and new wave washed away the disco sound, the time was ripe again for funny dance music. Kid Creole was looking for a new form of entertainment that would turn music, theater, dance and nonsense into a rousing mix of entertainment. The idea was not that new either - many big city revues in the 1920s and 1930s offered this relaxed form of the show. From her album "Tropical Gangsters" here are Kid Creole & The Coconuts with "Annie, I´m Not Your Daddy": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
