I was wrong--today's feature is 11-17-62--maybe next week? Sorry, but the earliest we'll hear a Satellite Survey from 1968 is sometime in December. Elinor and her pet Turtles won't allow for a '68 show any sooner than that.

Thanks for the reminder. It's a good thing the Beatles or Supremes didn't fit in the "no play on Sirius." If I were doing the show, I would just skip over whatever number "Elenore," was that week, and move right on to the next song. I know 1967 was the best year for the Turtles, and that was why we only had a few 1967 episodes. Those songs were "Happy Together, "She'd Rather Be With Me," "Do You Know What I mean," and "She's My Girl."

It is going to be interesting come New Years weekend when the Top 300 Listeners Choice selections are played on 60's on 6. "Happy Together" would be a likely pick in the Top 300. Just wondering how that will be handled.

1963 today, 11-21-20. Survey is from 11-23-63, a very sad day that year as JFK had been assassinated the day before.

The JFK assassination was 57 years ago today-I was five years old at the time.

The # 1 song on 11/23/63 was "I'm Leavin It Up To You" by Dale & Grace-At the time, they were scheduled to perform at a concert in Dallas-Of course, that didn't happen due to the JFK assassination.

Just wondering how that will be handled. Generally, SiriusXM doesn't include songs by the Turtles in these countdowns--limiting the voting list to songs that they actually play.

Joe, I'm glad your countdowns utilizing Cashbox charts include songs by the Turtles.

So we should be able to hear a 1968 show during the second week of December.

I don't know how many of you out there caught this week's Satellite Survey, but it was a special one in which Dave Hoeffel counted down the top fifty songs of the '60's that peaked at #11. He announced at the beginning that it was based on the book "Ranking The '60's" by Dan Isbell, so naturally, I grabbed my copy of the book to follow along. It didn't take long for me to notice something was seriously wrong. The order of the songs in the countdown did not correspond with the order of the songs in the book; it seemed that the people compiling the top fifty were going back and forth, up and down the list in the book and choosing songs willy nilly. (I knew the ones they chose were #11 hits, just not in the expected order.) The only possible explanation I can think of is that the staff used an updated version of Dan Isbell's book (I have the 2013 edition) and the new version uses a different formula or is based on a different chart source. Doofus67, if you are reading this, this would be a great issue to take up with Lou Simon on his weekly talk show, if you by chance had plans to call in. (If you cannot or don't want to, I perfectly understand.)

I listened to the Number Elevens special and made a list. Despite what Dave says throughout the show -- even joking that if we take exception to the way the songs are ranked we should "blame" Dann Isbell -- this ranking definitely is not taken from the RT60s book.
It's obvious that Lou Simon called upon Dann's associate, Bill Carroll, to create something new using the method he devised for Ranking the '70s and subsequent chart research books.
Bill computes a straight chart performance score, then factors in what he calls "normalization over time." It's a statistical device that gives additional weight to songs that came out during periods when chart movement of songs is faster and more fluid. That's why this new chart favors records from the middle years of the decade.
I'm in close-ish contact with Bill. I'll shoot him an e-mail to verify it, but I'm very sure that this is why we're getting such a "willy nilly" countdown. There's no updated edition of the RT60s book; otherwise, if I may show off, I would be one of the first people to get a hold of a copy.
My list of the songs from the show, along with RT60s ranks and Bill's scores, is on its way.
