Thank you doofus67! I have a suggestion for SiriusXm : Why don't they play the entire Hot 100 ( non stop music ) from 100 to 41 before the 60s sat survey regular weekly chart shows ? A dutch radio station used to do that a while ago ( Top 100 non stop until # 41 and just after AT40 of the same week ). Personally, I think that would be pretty cool. SXM doesn't keep records of TSL (time spent listening) or anything like that, but still, they may be concerned about losing people if they string a whole bunch of obscure records together. Actually, I can run this idea by 60s on 6's program director, Lou Simon, tonight. I'll be seeing him in person as an in-studio guest on his music talk show, The Diner. I'll let you know what he thinks.

My SoCal guy, Shotgun Tom Kelly, announced it last night: This weekend's Survey will be...at long last...1966! They will use either the June 25 or July 2 chart. I quote myself only to correct myself. I must have misunderstood Shotgun Tom. He must have said "the top songs of '66," not "this week in '66." I can't believe how outspoken Dave Hoeffel was about "Winchester Cathedral". That's the first time I'd ever heard him express disdain for any song on the Satellite Survey. I personally don't think the song is THAT bad. Sure, it was an anachronistic novelty song which had nothing to do with rock and roll, but it did have a certain campy charm to it. (Although, inexplicably, it would win a Grammy for, of all things, best rock and roll record of 1966 )

Speaking of 1966 hits, Lou Simon expressed some pretty clear dislike for Sandy Posey's "Born a Woman".
And on the 80s channel, Nina Blackwood clearly doesn't like Charlene's "I've Never Been To Me" or Will To Power's "Baby, I Love Your Way/Freebird" medley. It's kind of jarring to hear countdown DJ's state their dislike for past or present hits; Casey Kasem may not have liked some of the songs that he had to announce, but he made sure to only accentuate the positive when he gave his personal opinions of the hits or artists. To my knowledge Shadoe Stevens and Ryan Seacrest also haven't bashed AT40 hits on air that they don't like.

I was somewhat surprised to hear Dave Hoeffel do a countdown from 1961 this afternoon. I guess he finally found a week from that year in which those pesky Shirelles were absent. (On a related note, according to my research, he ought to be able to do a 1967 countdown later in the summer without tripping over Turtles.)

As far as Winchester Cathedral is concerned I always enjoyed that song--perhaps because it was a change of pace from most of the other stuff that was being played at the time.
In addition, I frankly am tired of all the 'specials' that are airing on the 60's Satellite Survey and have quit listening since I generally tune in to hear those underplayed lower charting songs--and not the same old stuff that you can hear any time.

Well, Joe, you may want to get back on board, at least for this week. It's a regular weekly countdown for 1961. Personally, I'd never heard about one-third of the songs before.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Reportedly next weekend's show will be songs from June 1970 (i.e. pre-Casey), at the last possible moment before 70s on 7 can start playing AT40s from that year.

Dave just followed up on that announcement. It'll be the top 50 songs of the entire month of June. Safe to say they're using Ranking the '70s by Dann Isbell and Bill Carroll as their source material. Can't wait!

THE 60s SATELLITE SURVEY SPECIAL...The Top 50 of June, 1970
Compiled using the Billboard Hot 100 charts for the weeks ending June 6, 13, 20, and 27, 1970, and the classic Reverse Rank method
Note: This chart fanatic is disappointed. Several times during the show, Dave will credit "Ranking the '70s by Dann Isbell" as the source for this particular ranking. Don't believe it. I went back and checked the point total for each song using Dann's AND Bill Carroll's formula, which combines Reverse Rank with a bonus point scale for any weeks that each song spent in the top 30. Had that system been used for this countdown, the songs that placed between #46 and #19 would be in a noticeably different order. Here's the actual order in which all the songs were played:
50. TEACH YOUR CHILDREN...Crosby, Stills & Nash 49. DON'T IT MAKE YOU WANT TO GO HOME...Brook Benton with the Dixie Flyers [Joe South's original version was played] 48. I CAN'T LEAVE YOUR LOVE ALONE...Clarence Carter 47. GO BACK...Crabby Appleton 46. FOR THE LOVE OF HIM...Bobbi Martin 45. COME TO ME...Tommy James & the Shondells 44. A SONG OF JOY...Miguel Rios 43. WESTBOUND #9...The Flaming Ember 42. I WANT TO TAKE YOU HIGHER...Sly & the Family Stone [Fabulous Flip Side] 41. YOU GOT ME DANGLING ON A STRING...The Chairmen of the Board 40. MISSISSIPPI...John Phillips 39. O-O-H CHILD...The Five Stairsteps 38. ARE YOU READY?...Pacific Gas & Electric 37. BABY HOLD ON...The Grass Roots 36. LET IT BE...The Beatles 35. TURN BACK THE HANDS OF TIME...Tyrone Davis 34. REACH OUT AND TOUCH (Somebody's Hand)...Diana Ross 33. CHECK OUT YOUR MIND...Curtis Mayfield & the Impressions 32. LOVE LAND...Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band 31. MISSISSIPPI QUEEN...Mountain 30. VEHICLE...The Ides of March 29. SUGAR SUGAR...Wilson Pickett 28. SPIRIT IN THE DARK...Aretha Franklin 27. HEY, MISTER SUN...Bobby Sherman 26. REFLECTIONS OF MY LIFE...Marmalade 25. IT'S ALL IN THE GAME...The Four Tops 24. GIMME DAT DING...The Pipkins 23. QUESTION...The Moody Blues 22. COME SATURDAY MORNING...The Sandpipers 21. BAND OF GOLD...Freda Payne 20. UNITED WE STAND...The Brotherhood of Man 19. DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS...Tom Jones 18. MY BABY LOVES LOVIN'...White Plains 17. AMERICAN WOMAN...The Guess Who ["No Sugar Tonight" was listed on the chart as the B-side; Dave didn't play it] 16. THE WONDER OF YOU...Elvis Presley ["Mama Liked the Roses" was listed on the chart as the B-side; Dave didn't play it] 15. MAKE ME SMILE...Chicago 14. LAY DOWN (Candles in the Rain)...Melanie with the Edwin Hawkins Singers 13. RIDE CAPTAIN RIDE...Blues Image 12. HITCHIN' A RIDE...Vanity Fare 11. CECILIA...Simon & Garfunkel 10. THE LETTER...Joe Cocker 9. UP AROUND THE BEND...Creedence Clearwater Revival 8. BALL OF CONFUSION (That's What the World Is Today)...The Temptations 7. MAMA TOLD ME (Not to Come)...Three Dog Night 6. LOVE ON A TWO-WAY STREET...The Moments 5. GET READY...Rare Earth 4. EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL...Ray Stevens 3. THE LOVE YOU SAVE...The Jackson 5 2. WHICH WAY YOU GOIN' BILLY?...The Poppy Family 1. I really don't understand how three songs that never made the Top 40 can be among the biggest hits of an entire month--I am referring to the Brook Benton , Clarence Crater and Tommy James songs. It seems like an excuse to play songs you would never hear anywhere else--something people complain about SiriusXM playing too many of the big hits too often and not playing the lower charting songs enough. However, it is putting songs like that on a countdown show that really causes me to question the credibility of the chart.
