Good catch OnWithTheCountdown on when Casey started using the phrase 'the industry's number one newspaper'. I just checked that out spot checking to see that it was indeed on the 3/30/91 show that he first used that phrase. I had always thought the switch from AT40 to CT40 as the most accurate countdown happened exactly 8 months later on 11/30/91 when AT40 ditched the Hot 100. But arguments can be made that due to the Hot 100's exclusion of non-released hits, CT40 was more accurate even before the end of 1991. Case in point being "U Can't Touch This" which hit #1 on CT40 and rightfully so while it came up way short on the Hot 100 and thus AT40 due to its limited availability as a single. That would be the best example from 1990 of why CT40 was more accurate than AT40. I think the best example in 1991 would be at the end of the year right as the chart change was made on AT40 with "Smells Like Teen Spirit" reaching CT40 and the top 10 and not hitting AT40 at all. For 1992, as I mentioned, it would have to be "This Used to be My Playground" only reaching #3 on AT40 while it spent 4 weeks at #1 on CT40. The one in 1993 I have mentioned on numerous occasions. It is the year end #1 hit which was 'That's the Way Love Goes" on CT40 and rightfully so while it was "Two Princes" on AT40, a song that did not even hit #1 on CT40 and rightfully not. Decent hit but not the massive hit that AT40 made it out to be IMO. Another one in 1993 is another Janet hit that got slighted on AT40, "Again" which did not hit #1 there. Finally, in 1994 the one has to be "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" that hit #1 on CT40 but only #3 on AT40. 1989* seems to be ok for AT40 so I suppose the change from AT40 to CT40 can be made when the decade changed. But it was when they ditched the Hot 100 that things really went downhill for AT40.
*In fact, AT40 got it right with "We Didn't Start the Fire" hitting #1 while it did not on CT40. IMO of course.

Agree again, "We Didn't Start The Fire" should be a #1 (even if only for a single week), but wasn't on R&R. For much of 1990, I felt R&R had the better charts. Another example: Jane Child's "Don't Wanna Fall In Love" was a two-week #1 on R&R, while getting stopped at #2 on the Hot 100. (Tommy Page & Sinead O'Connor prevented Jane from reaching #1 on BB, with Sinead having a stellar hit, and she'd later dethrone Jane Child from the top on R&R.) And as for the 1990 year-end, IMO, Mariah had the edge over Sinead for #1 song of the year. Continuing on the year-end train, CT40 had the better charts there as well. 1993 is a perfect example. While I really like "Two Princes", no way is it a #1 for the whole year. Not up against power hits like "Dreamlover" (#1 for 1993 on CT40), "That's The Way Love Goes" (#2), and "Can't Help Falling In Love" (#3) for starters. "Two Princes" was #8, which is more where it should be.
Speaking of 1990, been listening to the last CT40 regular show of that year, 12/15. After the teaser about the history behind David Seville and the Chipmunks, there was a Chipmunk-sounding Casey's Top 40 jingle leading into the commercial break. 😂 Casey would then tell the story in the following segment after #27. (The cue sheet for this show on Shannon's site is still unavailable.) Of course, Casey promos the year-end countdown a few times throughout, as it aired the following two weeks.

Jane Child is an excellent example and I know woolebull agrees wholeheartedly with that. Wonder what has happened to him. I made a mistake giving the #1 song of 1993 on CT40 to Janet. So Mariah got her second #1 hit of the year in the process. Did she get another with "We Belong Together"? I know she did not with "One Sweet Day". Donna Lewis had it in 1996. And it's a CT40 for me...8/21/93. Casey tells a story that I know he has told on other occasions probably around this time of the year because "White Christmas" is part of it. It is about Irving Berlin and how he could not write the songs that he thought of. Instead he had a small piano that he could take in cars when he would use one finger to play the tune in his head and someone else would write the words. He composed hundreds of songs and nearly 40 musicals and film scores with "White Christmas" being one of those songs. Quite a coincidence at #34. Yesterday I heard "Numb" by Linkin Park at that position on the 2003 AT40. Today it's U2 with their hit titled "Numb" at #34. These are not only 2 different songs but the U2 song does not sound like them. In fact, if I heard that song out of the blue without Casey or someone telling me what it is in a countdown, I never would have guessed it was U2. Not only is the Edge handling the vocals but it is a funky very unlike U2 sound. Legacy of Sound is very unique. A Swedish production team went looking for musicians to form a group. They found a guy in Kenya and another man in London. Then they wanted a female vocalist so went to LA and found this gal at a school of music. That's a 3 person group whose 3 members are from 3 continents. I am guessing the number of such groups appearing on AT/CT40 can be counted on one hand. "Happy" is a good song. Although that gal was Swedish in an ironic twist of fate. So the 3 members were only found on 3 continents but not necessarily from 3 continents. Casey's mention of SWV hitting #3 with "I'm So Into You" is another example of how AT40 got it wrong. Did not hit the top 10 there. "Dreamlover" takes down 2 Janet hits to be #1. Mentioned the year end above. On this show it moves 15-8 while Janet's "If" moves 9-4 to be the biggest mover in the top 10 as Casey said and he also said she was looking for her 8th #1 hit. Did not get it because of Mariah. Not too many biggest movers in the top 10 that fail to hit #1. Big Mariah fan but I actually prefer both Janet hits to her hit.

Nope, she didn't get it in 2005; Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" was #1 that year. She hasn't had a #1 of the year since 1993.

Wow remind me not to be out driving around in the same neighborhoods as Irving "Mr. Focused on his Driving" Berlin. He could have thought up tunes safely at home or in an office and had someone with him to help in one of those places - but No. Let's bring a piano in the car and I'll play it while also trying to avoid killing someone or us.
I wonder where Irving was on the nights of Monty Clift, James Dean, Jayne Mansfield, etc. ad nauseum.

Casey said that Berlin lived to be 101. So it looks like he did not get into any accidents though I get the sense that he was not the driver but a passenger in those cars which were early in the automobile age. He was a teenager in the first decade of the century. 8/25/90 AT40 starts with the Adventures of Stevie V. and later is Stevie B. I can't remember a pair of artists who names could be confused with each other that also had a similar sound. At least on their hits in this show as Stevie B. will release a ballad as a followup. And I like their danceable hits on this show, the former a #1 dance hit(Stevie V.) Shadoe answered a question about whether all the songs on an album had hit the top 40. No but MJ's Thriller album came close with only 2 songs that were not released failing to hit the top 40. If people are wondering about his next 2 albums or sister Janet, Bad had 11 songs on it, Dangerous had 14 songs on it and Rhythm Nation 1814 had an amazing 20 songs on it with one of them coming up in the countdown. So the record was not threatened by any of those albums. It's an apples and oranges situation but with streaming, isn't there an album from this century that has done that at least on the Hot 100? Played the album version with the cold ending that I don't think is on the 45 for "The Other Side" after saying how Aerosmith had stopped having alcohol sold at their concerts in an effort to curtail drunk driving deaths after their shows. 3 songs tied for biggest mover up 10 notches and my fave is "Thieves in the Temple". "Hand to Hold on To" is probably a LDD for the only time on AT/CT40 with Shadoe saying John Cougar. That's what he was known by for that hit but he is then known as John Mellencamp, having ditched the John Cougar Mellancamp within the year. Fave song is "Epic" but they did not quite let it finish!

Next to last regular AT40 of the 90s from 12/11/99. This is the second show in a row with a song sampling "No One to Depend On" by Santana. I would not have not known that had Casey not mentioned it(also played a clip of the original). Because unlike "Mentirosa" that was in the 1990 show, you can't decipher that Depend is being sampled IMO. Song is "Me, Myself and I" by Vitamin C making this the second time this week I have heard a song with that title, the first being the 2003 show I heard with Beyonce doing the song. De La Soul also had a hit with this title in 1989 and these are 3 different songs. This one peaked at 120 on the Hot 100 which has to make this the lowest peaking Hot 100 hit ever to appear on AT/CT40. I am guessing the number of such hits that bubbled under the Hot 100 can be counted on one hand. Another frequently used song title in the show is "Heartbreaker". Even though I am a big Mariah fan, I am less familiar with this song than the Stones, Pat Benatar and Dionne Warwick hits. Only reached #21 but hit #1 on the Hot 100. Surprised to hear a holiday hit as Casey said. It was 98 Degrees with "The Gift". Did not say the last time a Christmas song was in the countdown but I think the last one was New Kids' "This One's For the Children" in 1989. Does not sound like a Christmas song and I had never heard it previously. The only connection to the holidays is the line about giving that gift. Am definitely familiar with "I Do Cherish You" a bit later in the countdown. New Kids had the Christmas hit/regular hit double 10 years earlier. Informative story about a survey conducted by The Village Voice, a New York magazine for music critics. The survey determined the best songs of 1998 a year earlier and this was the top 3...#3 was "Intergalactic" by the Beastie Boys, #2 was "Doo Wop That Thing" by Lauryn Hill(great song) and #1 was "The Rockafella Skank" by Fat Boy Slim that was at 26 in the countdown. So it took almost a year for that song to take hold at CHR radio. Got a hit for both of the holidays coming up then with "Will 2K" in the show. Think that's the third time Will Smith has mentioned his hometown Philly in one of his hits. Santana has to be the first artist to have the #1 song and another song being sampled in the same show.

Speaking of New Kids, currently listening to a song that sounds like them: "I'll Be Your Everything" by Tommy Page (reason is two of the Kids co-wrote the song, as Casey mentioned in the intro). It's at #45 on the CT40 1990 year-end countdown, which I decided to jump to right after my previous show of 12/15/1990. Casey is in top form in his delivery.

I did not jump to the year end show that Casey was promoting in that 1999 show as OnWithTheCountdown did and that would have been the top 40 not top 50 or 100 by the way. I have dialed it back 10 years to the 9/16/89 AT40. Shadoe says that Bobby Brown is spending his 57th consecutive week in the countdown. Does not say that the streak started with his second show hosting AT40. Speaking of New Kids again, they debuted on his first show and I think have only missed a week or 2. He says that Bobby left New Edition when after the money was divvied out, he got $500 and a VCR. Total of 4 songs by Bobby Brown, Karyn White and the man who produces them Babyface, all faves. I got a kick out of Shadoe saying that the Stones had just become the 4th group to amass at least 50 hits on the Hot 100. As I alluded to in the other thread, there are almost that many artists who have amassed not 50 but 150 hits on that chart according to the 1990-2022 Joel Whitburn Pop chart book. And those 3 artists did it in less than half the time it took the Stones to get to 50! How many would they have if streaming existed in the 60s, 70s and 80s?! Not done with New Kids yet. They pull off a feat not done in 25 years since the Beatles did it. They have the 2 highest new entries on the Hot 100 with "Cover Girl" at 62 and "Didn't I blow Your Mind" at 68. And those 2 hits will join "Hangin Tough" in the countdown in a couple weeks to give them the rare 3 hits in the top 40. The last artist to do that had the #1 song in the flashback with one of those 3 songs, "Upside Down" by Diana Ross. And Diana was mentioned in the story about the #1 song because she was the first woman to hit #1 in a group and then as a solo artist. The second does so this week as Gloria Estafan hits the top.

12 one word titles, 11 two word titles for a total of 23. All of those numbers have to be close to the record. A lot of great songs among them including the #1 "Baby Boy". Now I have further data about what I was posting about a few weeks back. On the 12/11/93 AT40, Shadoe says there are a record 11 one word titles. Add in the 9 two word titles and the total of 20 means all of those numbers from the 2003 show are higher than this one and may indeed be the record. On this show I have already heard my fave one word titled song in it, "Anniversary". Another one word title and the biggest such hit in this show is "Dreamlover". Shadoe asked if anyone saw her TV special on Thanksgiving that year. Yes I did as a matter of fact! Think I heard "Hero" for the first time then. Says there are 15 ballads in this show. Seems like a lot. That 2003 show I referenced above had only a couple. That is one of the reasons I prefer the early 2000s though as I wrote, one of those ballads, "Anniversary" is a great song. I also went back 10 years to the 12/10/83 AT40 to see there were 9 ballads by my calculations in it. Ballads went down in the mid to late 80s before jumping back up in the early 90s. Certainly not any periods of ballad dominance this century. On the 7/6/91 show, Shadoe answers a question about one word titles and says the record was 11 and it was set in November 1982. He did not mention that it was only tying the record in the 1993 show when there were also 11 such titles. By the way, it was the first week of December 1982 that the top 5 were all one word titles. Did an interview with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis when they said they had known this group Sounds of Blackness for 20 years. But they had no record deal. So they formed their own label and signed them. Played a clip of their song "Optimistic" which sounded like a good one. Never charted however. Their only chart appearance reached #98 in 1994.

Jane Child is an excellent example and I know woolebull agrees wholeheartedly with that. Wonder what has happened to him. Here I am! And I think that might be the most accurate sentence ever typed on this board...I wholeheartedly agree that Jane Child was absolutely robbed! However...while I agree with most of the arguments used for why R and R actually was more accurate at that time, I always have found it odd that "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven" went to number one on R and R. It felt closer to a #4 song, where it did peak on the Hot 100. Speaking of R and R v Billboard near that time...I was listening to the CT 12/7/91 show and Casey did something I have never heard on CT...he used Billboard stats! It was part of Casey's Music Quiz and he was talking about the number ones of Roxette. The three choices on the quiz were, "The Look", "It Must've Been Love" and "Joyride". On CT, Joyride never made it to the top. Has anyone else ever noticed Casey using Billboard stats (not counting pre 1973 acts and songs) on CT?

I don't think he was saying that all of those choices were #1 R&R hits. Those trivia questions always seem to involve some choices that are obviously not the right answer. I see however that he was not listing their 3 biggest hits as I suspected initially. They did have a third #1 hit but it was "The Look" which he did not list. Maybe he simply wanted to list their 3 most recent big hits which is why "Joyride" was mentioned. Glad to see your post woolebull. Yeah Jane Child! To answer your question, I have caught him using Billboard stats for post-1973 stuff especially when it comes to what was #1 x years ago.

I thought the same because it was a trivia question, but like you said he could have used "The Look" (I actually thought it was "Listen To Your Heart" though that really doesn't matter). He didn't list "Fading Like A Flower" so the newness of a single to that time doesn't apply. I will be listening a little more intently to shows from that time to try to catch when Casey goes Billboard when he shouldn't, lol. I also will say that as much as I loved hearing "Gett Off", "You Could Be Mine", and "Mind Playing Tricks On Me"...I would trade them all just to have heard Shadoe countdown, "Do The Bartman". 1991 charts were amazing.

I am guessing one of those 1991 hits that Casey never announced which Shadoe did that you did not overlook is 'You Can't Play With My Yo-Yo" by Yo-Yo. Another hit that has the artist name in the song title. Heard that on the 7/6/91 AT40 with Shadoe also naming Ice Cube who sang on the song but did not get label credit. For the LDDs in this show, there is one by Mariah and "I'll Be There" in it but instead of being the same song, that represents back to back songs. "I Don't Wanna Cry" is a countdown LDD and the Escape Club's "I'll Be There" is next. The latter was a LDD/R&D a few times in the next year before Mariah's song of that title became a frequent LDD/R&D. Speaking of frequent LDD/R&Ds, "Faithfully" is an example. There was a LDD from their Frontiers Lp, however it was not that but my fave hit from that album, "Separate Ways". Hit #8 as Shadoe said but became the third of their 3 #1 hits on R&R, none of which hit the top on the Hot 100 of course. And in another example of a future hit being mentioned on a show, Shadoe says that Paula Abdul is single, cute and unattached before playing "Rush Rush" at #1. He says that there is a song called "Will You Marry Me" on her album. She insisted that a song be put on the album about a gal asking a guy to marry him. Record executives thought it as corny idea. That will be the 5th release from it.

12/20/97 CT40 starts with 2 songs I was not familiar with, "Happy" by Sister Hazel and "Sugar Cane" by Space Monkeys. Both are good alternative tunes. Casey tells a story about how Alana Davis had been tabbed as a great new singer sounding like Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman and even Stevie Wonder. "32 Flavors" has a bit of a "Give Me One Reason" feel to it. I think she is a cross between Carole King and Kate Bush. Good vocalist but she obviously did not live up to the hype. Not sure I would have known it was Bryan Adams if I heard "Back to You" outside of a countdown. His voice has changed from even his last hit a couple years earlier. "Mo Money Mo Problems" is one of my fave sampling hits. "3AM" and "Push" are the great pair of hits for Matchbox 20 in this show. So is "You Make Me Wanna" by Super Bowl 58 halftime performer Usher. When Casey said that we would find out next week where "How Do I Live" would rank in the year end top 100, he was not quite right. Because it was in the top 50 and only #100-51 would be played that week, people would not find out until the following week.
