Tim McGraw have any hits then? Heard a commercial by a country star who got backup vocals on my fave song by her from Tim. That's Jo Dee Messina and "Bring on the Rain". Which was probably on the ACC show on the date of the AT40 I am listening to...9/8/01. Yes, he actually had the #1 song that week with "She Never Lets It Go To Her Heart". And Jo Dee Messina has #16 with "You're Not In Kansas Anymore" (in the 1996 show). For 9/8/2001, she was in at #8 with "Downtime", and Tim McGraw followed her at #7 with "Angry All The Time". Gonna be listening to a lot more Bob Kingsley in the coming months. đ

Yeah I remember now that their collaboration came out a little later in the year. No country songs on this AT40. If they used the Hot 100, country would have been in the countdown. Besides the Jo Dee and Tim and his Angry hit, songs by Toby Keith, Brooks & Dunn and Alan Jackson among others made the top 40 around the date of this show.
Not country but looking as good as she did in 2001 is Alicia Keys. Saw her at the US Open tennis the other day on TV. 'Jumping 5 notches to #9 is Alicia Keys, racking up her first top 10 with "Fallin"'.

Shadoe is saying things that are hard to corroborate on the 9/11/93 AT40. First he says that "Reason to Believe" is the 10th live remake of a #1 song to be a hit. In this case, it is Rod Stewart remaking his own hit that was part of the double sided release with "Maggie Maye". Shadoe said he would talk about the other 9 live remakes of #1 hits on another show. Not sure if he ever did but I tried to figure what those songs were. Flipping through the listing of #1 hits, I came up with only 5. Besides Reason, I have "Stay", "I'll be There", "Papa was a Rolling Stone" and "The Way We Were". Then he said that a few weeks earlier, Expose had set a record for most top 10 hits by girl groups with their 8th. He can't be talking about girl groups since the Suoremes have far more than that. Didn't think Expose was an all girl band but even so, whose record did they break unless it was their own? Bangles with 5 had the most top 10 hits among all girl bands. Speaking of all girl bands, 4 Non-Blondes were such a band until their guitarist left. Linda Perry said replacing her with another gal was not the priority since all girl bands were a gimmick. So that's why a man was her replacement. A bit of a prophetic statement by Shadoe after he played "Cryin". Said that Aerosmith were amazing. Well that happens to be the title of their next release! We found out on the 70s show last week who the first black group and male solo artist to hit #1 were. Shadoe answers a question about the first black woman to hit #1. Teased it by saying she is known for shattering glass in a commercial for Memorex when she skat sung 'Is it live or is it Momorex?' I remember that. It's Ella Fitzgerald who sang on an Ink Spots #1 hit in 1944. Shadoe then mentions a man that may have been mentioned for the first time by either him or Casey when he says that Joel Whitburn thinks Ella would have hit #1 in 1938 with her most famous song had the charts existed then. Good stuff there!
Another first for an AT or CT40? The first singles from consecutive albums that each spent at least 4 weeks at #1 are in a show. It's Janet that pulls off this feat with "That's the way Love Goes" in hour 2 and "Miss You Much" the LDD in hour 3. She's also got "If" which is my fave of the 3 in hour 4 that Janet in an interview says is very eclectic. If I would was to guess, I would say it is also her favorite of the 3 songs. That was #8 and starts off the frozen part of the chart. The top 8 stayed in the same position with Shadoe mentioning how the top 14 did that in August 1978. Also had a top 10 and 11 doing so in the 15 years in between IIRC.

It's the 9/15/90 AT40 with 2 debuts one of which is a Hot 100 new entry. That is "Black Cat" which ties "Escapade" as Janet's highest new entry at 37, so far.
She is entering but on his way out spending his last ever week on AT40 is Billy Idol. "Cradle of Love" is right up there among my favorite last hits for an artist. Other such hits, one each from the 70s, 80s and 2000s are "Love Machine", "Superstitious" and "Be Without You".
He said 'counting down the hits from Australia to Albany, NY'. I was living in Albany then though not listening to any countdowns.
Answered a question about the only artist to hit the top 5 on all 4 major charts. Answer: Sheena Easton who hit #1 with "Morning Train", top 5 country with "We've got Tonight" and #3 black and #1 dance with "Sugar Walls". Wonder what hit came the closest to doing that as of 2024.
"Epic" is the first hit to fall out of the top 10 and return since "Get Closer" in 1976 and among my top 5 faves in this show.
Shadoe plays tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan playing clips of "Let's Dance" that he played guitar on along with David Bowies next 2 hits and Stevie's "Crossfire" that hit #1 on the Album tracks chart. Great song that I have known since it was a hit. Last show was in Wisconsin playing with his brother Jimmy of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Eric Clapton and Robert Cray. Died in a helicopter crash afterward on his way to Chicago.

AT40 from September 18, 1999.
This chart was filled with the icons of my grade 12 year of high school, which had just started, so it's very nostalgic for me. From pop icons like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, to Latin stars like Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias and Marc Anthony, alternative rockers like Blink 182, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam, to legends like Madonna, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Santana, this had it all!
Casey mentioned that a lot of the leftover supplies from Woodstock '99 such as medical equipment would end up being donated for those in need, including the earthquake in Turkey around this time. Everlast's "What It's Like", as one of the performers at Woodstock '99, was played as an extra after this story, as there were several shorter songs (under 3 minutes) in the countdown and a need to fill space. Both Casey and Rick would often have extras in the show around this time for this reason.
There was a QL of the best selling female albums of the 90's (these had become rare by this time on AT40): 5. Mariah Carey - Music Box (24M) 4. Celine Dion - Falling Into You (25M) 3. Celine Dion - Let's Talk About Love (27M) 2. Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill (28M) 1. Whitney Houston - The Bodyguard Soundtrack (no sales given) It led into Whitney's song in the countdown, "It's Not Right But It's OK".

I'll be listening to that 1999 show in a few weeks. đ Finished 4/17 this morning, and currently on 4/24, in the midst of my 1997-1999 marathon at work.
Red Lobster has had a lot of spots in these 1999 shows, and sad to see them struggling today. Fortunately, the locations in Minnesota (where I used to live) and the one by where I currently live, are still open. Many other locations throughout the country have not been so fortunate.

5 months later than OnWithTheCountdowns last show, it is the 9/20/97 CT40 and at least one song has been on the countdown that long.."Hard to say I'm Sorry". The 80s 1980 show has the same date as this and they both have one debut. This one is "Legend of a Cowgirl" by Imani Coppola which I prefer to Eltons 1980 debut song. Elton will debut with "Candle in the Wind 1997" and "Something about the Way You look Tonight" back to back in 2 weeks. Of course those hits or really just Candle was due to the death of Princess Diana. Another death that year was that of the Notorious BIG and his "Mo Money Mo Problems" is one of my favorites in this show.
Yes Casey says "B*tch" every week it is in the countdown. This is one of those weeks. Another favorite there.
Casey answered a question about the biggest instrumental in the 90s. It's by the biggest instrumental artist of the 90s as he said...Kenny G. "Forever in Love" reached #9. Casey said instrumentals were few and far between. He listed them.."Children" peaked at 17, "Lily was here" peaked 12, "Theme from Mission Impossible" peaking at 11 were the other 3 in the 90s. I think the only instrumentals to reach AT40 since then peaked in the 30s..."Southhampton" and "Sandstorm".

Now it's the CT40 from 9/21/91. Starts with a Jon Bon Jovi produced hit for Billy Falcon called "Power Windows". Has a chorus with the line 'no air conditioner, no cellular phone'. Could that be the first hit with cell or cellular phone in the lyrics? Last week ever on CT/AT40 for .38 Special with another great last hit "The Sound of your Voice". Second straight week a major artist spent their last ever week in the countdown with Natalie Cole having done so the previous week. .38 Special is 1 of 4 rock bands whose origin dates to the 70s that had their last hit in 1991. Styx, AC/DC and Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet band being the other 3. And Segers "The Real Love" is also in the countdown.
6 years and exactly 1 week after the infamous dead dog dedication, an R&D is about a girl whose family had to put their dog down because of a disease that could not be cured. When Casey read from her letter that the dog's expression translated to 'please help me', it gave me pause. Dedicated "Glory of Love".
Casey correctly answered a question he incorrectly answered on the 70s show a couple weeks back about the highest debut in chart history. Forgot about the 2 Beatle hits that debuted at 10 in the 1974 show. Mentioned all 5 top 10 debuts this time. Of course those are all Hot 100 debuts. Obviously no top 10 debuts in R&R chart history to that point. And I don't know what the highest was to that point or the entire chart history.
Speaking of Styx earlier, Casey says what the first well known example of graffiti was in connection with Extreme's PORNOGRAFFITI album. Happened about 50 years earlier when a ship inspector instead of signing his initials wrote 'Kilroy Was Here' on the ships. Of course that was the title of Styx' 1983 album.

Not too often we hear the same song in a dedication that isn't Bette Midler or Celine Dion. Heard "Glory Of Love" as a dedication in the CT40 from 4/12/1997 at work this morning. It was from a man named Kevin, to his ex, Stacy (or Stacey?). Currently in the top 10 of this show. Also, Casey played the Jerry Maguire version of "Secret Garden" for the first time (movie dialogue inserted in parts of the song). This is also the show where "MMMBop" debuts.
ETA: Also been listening to AT40 from 9/8/1984 in the car. I failed to notice the first time when hearing this show, especially after the note on the previous show about #12 and #15 being swapped (Billboard error), the movements Casey quoted in this show were from the actual 9/1 chart, and not from the 9/1 show. Had I not known about that error, it would have thrown me off, because the movements from those two positions Casey quoted didn't line up with where they were played in the 9/1 show (those songs being "I Can Dream About You" and "Round And Round").

Found out something more about Peter "Glory of Love" Cetera in the CBHits track. It was his second solo album that precipitated his departure from Chicago. Had recorded a solo album in 1982. Wonder why he had no hits from that. In fact, nothing even hit the chart. "MMMbop" kicked off that 9/20/97 show. Bette Midler had the third R&D in the 1991 show with the over requested "Wind Beneath my Wings". I skipped it as I usually do. Don't skip much of anything on these shows but often requested meh songs like that one or any Michsel Bolton LDD I skip. I would have been surprised if Casey would have used the chart positions of the 9/1 show instead of the 9/1 chart. Not sure I would hVe noticed either way. Good for you if you think you would have noticed had he used the 9/1 show positions.
Into the second part of my 9/21 double play today. The 2002 show from that date starts out with a great one redebuting after an 8 week absence, "Still Fly". Leading into "All Eyes on Me", Casey says that Monica's biggest hit was her duet with Brandy, "The Boy is Mine". A couple THRILLER songs intertwined in those hits. Eyes samples "PYT" and Boy is an opposite sex version of "The Girl is Mine". Both great songs by Monica.
Casey lists all the hits from the last few years with 'I Do' in their title. Started with Lisa Loeb whose 1997 hit "I Do" extended into 1998. Then 98 Degrees had "I Do (Cherish You) in 1999. Blaque had "I Do" in 2000 and Toya had the biggest hit with that title in 2001. In the countdown extending the yearly streak is 3LW. Streak ends there btw.
Casey says that Christina Aguilera feels like a 35 year old businesswoman in a 21 year old body. Because she says you grow up fast in the music industry constantly dealing with record label executives that are 20 years older. Leads into the highest debut "Dirty". Yeah she has a tougher, more independent attitude on the parent album that includes "Fighter" which reinforces that mentality.
Another instance when Casey mentions a future hit when in the intro to "Goodbye to You" he says that Michelle Branch sings "The Game of Love" on Santanas new album. It hits the countdown in 3 weeks.
Good grief! On both of these 9/21 shows, "Wind Beneath my Wings" was the third LDD.
Casey says "Just a Friend 2002" is a remake of the Biz Markie 1990 hit. Record Research does not and I side with them since the lyrics are entirely different.

Got a road trip later this morning; heading up for viewings and a funeral for a family member that passed earlier this month. Road trips mean, more shows to listen to. đ Got AT40 from 9/22/2001, ACC from 9/25/2004, and a couple of AT20 HAC shows, 9/20/2008 and 9/23/2006. Haven't given the HAC shows much of a listen of late despite having all but 3 (CH20 shows from 1995 missing).
Lots of rain today...please be safe out there!

I had been listening to AC and HAC shows every now and then until about 3 years ago when I decided to listen to just AT40 and CT40 shows because I wanted to get through listening to each one done by Casey, Shadoe or a guest host. It should be in about 6 months that I will have done that.
Getting one show closer to that goal, it's the 9/23/89 CT40. I count 4 first singles from major artist albums that will generate hits well into 1990 and beyond. One is "Healing Hands" from SLEEPING WITH THE PAST which Casey told a story about since it is a concept album Elton made about the soul artists he grew up listening to like Marvin Gaye and the Drifters. The other 3 hits from major artist albums are by Motley Crue, Aerosmith and Janet.
Casey said it was 20 years ago that week that the Beatles ABBEY ROAD was released. Said that "Sowing the Seeds of Love" sounded reminiscent of that. Great song that actually sounds more like "I am the Wslrus" which is from a previous album. Great song regardless.
Nice R&D "Fast Car" dedicated to all the homeless children.
One of the few times that Casey mentioned the recently deceased Frankie Beverley as he and his group Maze had the #1 black song.

Tuning into the 9/29/73 countdown and Casey provided a list of current family acts, including the debuting DeFranco Family. Plenty of great R&B on this show, especially in Hour #1. And âStoned Out Of My Mindâ by The Chi-Lites is best of all. Some classic rock too, including a track that topped the chart. The weekâs highest debut opened Hour #2 at #26. And Casey gave it a banner introduction, noting âBasketball Jonesâ was a parody, performed by âthe hottest comedy act on record for the past couple of years.â Of the zigzag chart run of Kris Kristoffersonâs âWhy Meâ, it moved back up the survey this week. Casey also promoted AT40âs special, âcoming up next weekâ, a Fall feature every year 1972-1976.

Listening to 9/22/79 with what might be the diverse top three of all time holds for a second week as Charlie Daniels, Earth Wind and Fire, and The Knack hold down the top. Also interesting to note, "Don't Bring Me Down" drops from 4 to 10 this week. It's interesting to me because I know it will crater on 10/20/79 and it will crater from 13 to 39. Which means for three weeks on its way down it only dropped three spots. Did a quick check and saw it held at 10 on 9/29/79 making it the first of two songs to hold at number 10 in the last few months of 1979 after dropping five notches (see M in a couple of months). Gotta love inflated charts!
Also from the, "I never realized how fast it went up" department, finished the 9/17/83 show and was floored that "The Safety Dance" made it to number three in just its second week in the t10. Cool stat.

The last 2 posts are about shows dated 9/29. Yes that Chi-Lites song is great song. Surprised despite rebounding at one point, it did not get out of the 30s. Good point on that top 3 woolebull. Spot checked the shows from the last week in September to see if there were any others like that. There is one and its this weeks 80s A show with the same 3 geners represented...R&B/AC, rock and country.
A couple days earlier on the calendar, I've got the 9/27/03 AT40 playing. You can count on one hand the number of one debut shows in the first run of AT40. All your fingers and toes may not be enough to account for all of those shows in the second run. This is one of those with Pharrell Williams having it.
Casey pays tribute to Johnny Cash. Says he got his footing in the 50s recording on Sun records with Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. Mentioned his signature pop hits. Said he had recently become just the second artist to be inducted into both the Rock & Roll and Country Hall of Fame with Elvis being the first. This is probably the last tribute Casey will give on AT40. His first was to Janis Joplin in 1971 btw.
Mentioned that when Pat Monihan got his first royalty check in the amount of $30,000 for Train's first hit "Meet Virginia", he was able to pay off all of his debts. That must be the greatest feeling recording artists have when after years of piling up debt, they finally get that bteakthrough hit to get out ofvthe red and into the black financially.
Almost as rare as one debut shows in the 70s and 80s is having a rocker played as a LDD in the 90s or 2000s. But such was the case with "It's Been Awhile" being the third LDD. Great song and one of many in this show btw.
Wow 15 weeks at #1 on the AC chart for "Drift Away". Not sure if I have ever heard that high a number when reviewing other chart #1 hits by Casey.
