I posted this regarding AT40's playing of the top 3 recap songs in the 80's thread several years ago, but thought it might be worth adding to the FAQ thread. It's a general history of the top 3 recap during the first Casey run (feel free to let me know if there are any inaccuracies):
2/24/79 - 2/7/81: All three of the previous week's top 3 songs played in full (2/14/81 featured only the previous week's #1 - from that point on, the number of the previous week's top 3 songs that got played varied from zero songs to all three)
8/1/81: The first week since 2/17/79 that none of the previous week's top 3 were played; Casey merely gave the top 3 recap verbally
2/5/83: The last week that the previous week's top 3 was played in full with any regularity; by the end of 1983 it would become very common for none of the top 3 recap songs to be played
1/10/87: Last time all three top 3 recap songs played
1/31/87: Last time previous week's #1 and #2 songs played - in fact starting with 2/7/87, it was rare for even the previous week's #1 song to be played; that only happened a handful of times throughout the remainder of 1987, including 3/21/87, 7/18/87, and the the following date:
11/21/87: Last time any of top 3 recap songs played (LW#1 was played) - a notable exception was on 1/9/88, when Charlie Van Dyke started the show by playing the #1 from the Top 100 of 1987 ("Walk Like an Egyptian")
After 2/5/83, the only weeks in which all three songs of the top 3 recap were played were 9/22/84, 12/20/86, 12/27/86, and 1/10/87 (let me know if there are any other shows where this happened that I'm missing). The last time any of the top 3 recap songs were played was 11/21/87 when they played just the LW #1 song. Between 2/5/83 and 12/20/86, the only show where all 3 of the recap songs were played was 9/22/84 (your guess is as good as mine as to why it was done for that one show over almost four years).
