I posted before that 6/30/79 is one of those shows that's about as close as it comes to perfect for me (Rex Smith's dreadful "Take My Breath Away" is the only real dud) -- 6/23/79 appears to be just as good, if not maybe even slightly better. "In the Navy" is another song I can do without, and John Denver's "Annie's Song" is an unfortunate archive extra, but overall just a great show on tap for the coming weekend... This Top Ten, or those within a few weeks of it, have to be the highest energy Top Tens in Top 40 history. It's like early 1972 in reverse. Rex belonged there. I think we should trade him for Down By The Lazy River Oh, I don't know about that; that particular week (and surrounding weeks) also had "She Believes In Me", "Chuck E's In Love", and "Just When I Needed You Most" in the Top Ten. Those aren't exactly high energy songs. I would look forward six weeks and choose the August 4 Top Ten. No ballads, and only two mid-tempo songs (by John Stewart and Dr. Hook). But you have six disco songs (by Streisand, David Naughton, Chic, Anita Ward, and Donna Summer X2), and two genuine rockers (by Cheap Trick and The Knack).

July and August had the weeks I was thinking of. Disco dominating the Top Ten (and 40) and Disco Demolition Night in Chicago. It was quite a summer.

How do you top an Eltimate 1979 show? You do it with an Eltimate 80s combo of Charlene and Commentary Casey!

Has there ever been a countdown show that's ever aired where at least 1 week you liked every song on the countdown? In addition, you also liked all the extras, dedications, etc? This pertains to any countdown show, so it's not exclusive to just AT40. Personally I have to say I don't think there's ever been one for me. It varies for me. My specialty is 1994 to 2002 and there are weeks when I'd listen to a show from 1994 or 1995 and at the very least enjoy every song while I listen back to the countdown. I have a rule that when I listen to an old show, I won't skip any of it unless it's a song I really don't care for or am still sick of all these years later. When I get into countdowns from 1998, 99 or into 2000, there are ample songs I just want to skip. I don't have many shows from before 1994 but it's something I'd like to explore a bit more, just to see what songs were making the charts earlier in the 90s that I may have forgotten about. But as of now, to answer this original question, I'd say yes.

Kim Carnes, Air Supply, very underrated ones by Hall & Oates and Dr. Noah Drake. Supertramp, Beach Boys! Did I mention Rick Springfield?! This was one of the last panels if not the very last with an early 80s feel. It's hard to believe how different the charts would permanently look & sound in just a couple weeks.

Rick Springfield, LRB, and Beauregard Duke!! Kim Carnes, that rascally Rabbitt!! Two weeks later, Eddie Rabbitt's song began living up to its title, as, the week after it hit the Top Ten, at #10, it moved up one step at a time all the way up to its peak of #5. At least once during this time (on the 9/26 show), Casey commented on this coincidence.

I don't necessarily agree with LVK's assessment of the '80 show but I dig his enthusiasm. I wouldn't want to be accused of listening only to harp!

This week's 10-17-81 show looks a bit intriguing. We begin with three great classic rock songs-BOC's "Burnin For You", Billy Squier's "In The Dark" and Diesel's "Sausalito Summer Night" (love the bass guitar in that song). We also get the final week of the 3 manifestations of Lionel Richie- a duet with Diana Ross and 2 Commodores songs. Finally, the debuts of the #1 and #2 punch of the winter of 1982 in ONJ's "Physical" and Foreigner's "WF*GLY". Right now I'm listening to a couple of vinyl compilations as a bit of a primer for the show. K-Tel's "Radio Active" and some close but not quite hits from "The Heavy Metal Soundtrack".
