Pre AT40 example: Classics IV 'Spooky'='Stormy' BTO's 'You ain't seen nothin' yet, and , 'Hey, you.' Babys 'Isn't it time'=Every time I think of you'. Spooky, Stormy and another song they recorded Everyday with you Girl they all sounded the same. You would think they were joined at the hip. They were all great songs though.

Roxette: The Look > Joyride Also Dressed For Success > Dangerous Church Of Your Heart > How Do You Do Listen To Your Heart > It Must Have Been Love > Spending My Time Actually, "Fading Like A Flower" and "Spending My Time" also sound somewhat alike, but the beats are different.

You are correct. I did leave out Traces. And Spooky does sound different than the other three. Those three songs are almost identical. Just a few slight differences.

"The Joker" and "Dance, Dance, Dance" by Steve Miller Band. They both have similar sounding voices. Same goes for all of their stuff except for "Abracadabra".
I am not sure if there is a comparison in any of Earth, Wind & Fire's material. I am not sure if I can compare "Let's Groove" with any of their earlier upbeat stuff.

James Brown>any other James Brown That's a load of crap! From Durkee’s book… One of Watermark’s early problems with selling AT40 to stations was crossover R&B hits, particularly James Brown’s songs. Watermark workers insisted that in AT40’s early years, one might have heard Tom Rounds muttering something like this: “it seems every week AT40 has a James Brown record in the first hour.” Specifically TR recalled, “The problem was the James Brown records got into the 30s on the chart, sat there for a couple weeks, and disappeared. James Brown was definitely the ‘Godfather of Rock and Roll,’ but his records sounded pretty much the same.”

From this week's 1983 AT40, I think that ABC's "Poison Arrow" is somewhat similar to "The Look of Love" in terms of beat and dynamics; Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" is a continuation, in theme and sound, of "Let's Get It On"; and Kenny Loggins' "Heart to Heart" feels like a retread of "This Is It", complete with Michael McDonald's backup vocals.

I always thought Air Supply's 1981 #1 "The One That You Love" was borrowing too liberally from 1980's #2 "All Out Of Love."

How about H&O's Fall 1981 #1 Private Eyes sounding too much like their Spring 1981 #1 Kiss On My List?
