Listening to the countdown right now on CKWW - just played "Never Let Her Go" by David Gates - sounds very similar to "Make It With You" (By David Gates/Bread)

BTO shamelessly ripped themselves off for Hey You (using parts of Let It Ride and YASNY.
But the rest of their stuff was different sounding.

One of Watermark’s early problems with selling AT40 to stations was crossover R&B hits, particularly James Brown’s songs. Watermark workers insisted that in AT40’s early years, one might have heard Tom Rounds muttering something like this: “it seems every week AT40 has a James Brown record in the first hour.” Specifically TR recalled, “The problem was the James Brown records got into the 30s on the chart, sat there for a couple weeks, and disappeared. James Brown was definitely the ‘Godfather of Rock and Roll,’ but his records sounded pretty much the same.” i.e.: "The Popcorn", "Mother Popcorn", "Let a Man Come In and Do the Popcorn". ;D ...and after all that promotion, the Popcorn still didn't become a legendary dance craze a la the Twist, the Jerk, the Bump, the Hustle, or the Freak! BTW, JB (AFAIK) never billed himself as "Godfather of Rock and Roll" but instead as "Godfather of Soul", post-1972 (when the "Godfather" movie came out), replacing "Soul Brother #1", which in turn replaced "The Hardest Working Man In Show Business". (All of above said with great affection, as I've always admired Mr. Brown, messy personal life and all. It's too bad that on oldies radio such a prolific artist is treated as though he only made one recording in his entire life--we all know which one that is!)

Here's a pretty easily explicable one: Survivor's "Burning Heart" sounds a lot like "Eye of the Tiger". Which is pretty symbolic; just as Rocky IV followed Rocky III, BH is a definite sequel to EOTT.

From Durkees book One of Watermarks early problems with selling AT40 to stations was crossover R&B hits, particularly James Browns songs. James Brown was definitely the Godfather of Rock and Roll, but his records sounded pretty much the same. Yeah, how dare James Brown inconvenience top forty programmers by continuously having hits? Who did that guy think he was?! Since Durkee mistakenly called JB the "Godfather of Rock and Roll," I question his ability to critique the man's music. He was the "Godfather of Soul!" Further, I can't take seriously anyone who claims that "Please, Please, Please," "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "It's A Man's Man's Man's World," "Cold Sweat," "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud," "Hot Pants," "King Heroin," and "Papa Don't Take No Mess" all sounded the same. Is our boy Durkee (dorky?) also one of those yahoos that claims all Chuck Berry and Little Richard records sounded the same?

First, the James Brown quote from Rob's book was not made or written by Rob. This was part of an explanation that he used from an AT40 authority. To state that he made the reference is a completely uninformed remark. Secondly, name calling? An ignorant assumption? Why? For what purpose? .
