Offering a lost classic from 7/25/81, which failed to reach Billboard's top 40. It's a great cover of the classic Gene Pitney hit from late summer 1964: "It Hurts to be in Love" - Dan Hartman www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z31rUWBMnqc

As Casey was bidding adieu to "American Top 40", right below the 40 were two interesting songs that looked like they might become the first top 40 for each artist. Alas, neither of them would make the Top 40. The next release from each artist, however, would be number one hits for both. One of the songs was, "Knocked Out" by Paula Abdul which just missed the 40 peaking eventually at 41. She would begin her dominance of the charts in January of 1989 with the number one, "Straight Up". The other was a group who would hit number one just four months later with "Baby I Love Your Way/ Freebird Medley". In August of 1988, however, Will to Power was just beginning to slide from their peak of 49 to 50 with their number one dance smash, "Say It's Gonna Rain". If you look at the charts from particularly 1988 and 1989, there are tons of Freestyle songs that make the Top 50 but either barely or never make the Top 40. Tons. From Stevie B to Dino to Timmy T to Will To Power, Freestyle was hitting, some of it even hitting really big. Will To Power would eventually hit the pop jackpot. With this song, they would have to settle for #49. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR2Ds-7EAhA

For the week of August 6, 1988...one thing that has always characterized 1988 for me (and 1989 somewhat as well), is the number of great songs on the Hot 100 that didn't make the top 40, and the number of not great songs that made the top 40. First, debuting at #88 is Midnight Oil's follow up to "Beds are Burning": www.youtube.com/watch?v=16bFBzx7I_0And Scritti Politti's 3rd and final Hot 100 hit (though lead singer Green Gartside is still kicking out an occasional album under the name Scritti Politti) in it's peak week at #53: www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7qCaCcfjXgThe late Roger Troutman (of "I Want To Be Your Man" fame) assisting on this one btw...

Absolutely loved "Boom!" Bought the album, "Provisions" back then at the age of 15...I think the first album I bought without a Top 40 hit attached with it.

Me too--my family got our first CD player that summer and I remember buying Provision for that song. Pretty sure it was the first CD I got with no top 40 hits as well...you must be a fellow '73 guy...

I was born on the day, "Frankenstein" hit the top? Yourself?

I missed last week, so I'm going to throw out a couple songs for the week of August 8, 1987 first: www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8gFbr5rcVkOne of my favorite songs by one of my favorite alt-rock bands ever. The song never made the Hot 100, but was released in the late summer of 1987. They could have made a little more effort on the video, but they seemed to have a thing about doing oddball videos. And another great song that did hit the Hot 100, but inexplicably didn't reach the top 40... www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqdNcAjj9p4

I was going to pick this song for this week as well. Great song--I was a big INXS guy back in the day, and didn't realize how many of their songs they'd made videos for until looking them up on YouTube yesterday. There's even a video for the title track from their 1981 album Underneath the Colours, which didn't get released in the US until several years later.

Offering a lost classic from 8/21/82, which failed to reach Billboard's top 40. It's an interesting remake of the original classic Sly and the Family Stone hit from 1969: "Hot Fun in the Summertime" - Dayton www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiMLHYKgkDw

Just can't believe this 8/21/82 "lost classic" only peaked at #41. They would make up for it; eleven of their next twelve singles would go top 10, including three that peaked at the top of the charts. Workin' For A Livin' - Huey Lewis and The Newswww.youtube.com/watch?v=WIgXQFrw2NE
