For the week of August 21, 1982 (my 9th birthday was that week), a song that got a decent amount of airplay on MTV at the time but sadly didn't make the Hot 100. Another example of how Split Enz was unjustifiably overlooked here in the States... www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJgY2qFzS60

Just can't believe this 8/21/82 "lost classic" only peaked at #41. They would make up for it; eleven of their next twelve singles would go top 10, including three that peaked at the top of the charts. Workin' For A Livin' - Huey Lewis and The Newswww.youtube.com/watch?v=WIgXQFrw2NENot totally "lost" - it's made most of their hits compilations.

Just bewildering how it didn't climb any higher...

I'll throw another obvious one out there... She wrote it and reached the top of the country charts in 1974. She re-recorded it for a movie soundtrack in 1982 and it topped the country charts again. But the cover version recorded in 1992 by another artist is one of the best selling singles of all time... I Will Always Love You - Dolly Partonwww.youtube.com/watch?v=NuZO1iT4kD0

For August 30, 1986, the original version of this "lost classic" was the "B" side of Sam & Dave's "I Thank You". Z Z Top took the "A" side to #34 in 1980. The "B" side peaked at #50 when it was covered by... Wrap It Up - Fabulous Thunderbirdswww.youtube.com/watch?v=3P3No5P4sFs

Once again I wanted to choose the same song as you. Maybe I should have chosen the Air Supply song...

Another lost classic from August 30, 1986 (I think?), that sadly never made the top 40: "Say It, Say It" by future Rugrats voice actress E.G. Daily: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW2LOaCHhOg

I am very familiar with that Moody Blues tune and all of them that are on the greatest hits package that was shown in the video around the 5 minute mark. This one and "Ride My See Saw" from 1968 are the only singles on that album which did not reach the top 40. But very well known to me just the same. In fact, RYSS will probably pop up on the new '60s lost classic thread...in about 2 months!
Was NOT familiar with that Gwen Guthrie tune. Not happy about that. Just means I will have to play it a few times!

In my area it received plenty of airplay in the fall of '68. I was also surprised that it's predecessor, "Tuesday Afternoon", only reached #24 nationally. Kind of surprised that the Moody's old label didn't re-release that song (or "See-Saw") after the #2 success of the re-released "Nights In White Satin" in ;72.

Since the #1 song on the 9/5/87 Billboard Hot 100 was a remake, I'll keep it in the same vein. The only Top 40 hit for this Canadian group was a cover of a #1 song sung in a "throwback" style. Before we kissed them goodbye, they went to the well once again and peaked at #75 with this tune. Are you a turtle??? Happy Together - Nylonswww.youtube.com/watch?v=CViyLht0xnI

I actually had this as a "one to look out for" on my personal Top 15 when I was 14...and then it just went away. It got, I thought, solid airplay in the Roanoke (VA) market and Winston-Salem/Greensboro market.
