Offering a lost classic from 5/14/77, which failed to reach Billboard's top 40; it's a fair cover (with, imho, a Bay City Rollers sound) of the Tommy James & the Shondells early 1967 hit: "I Think We're Alone Now" - The Rubinoos www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHuKp8774p8Wow – what IF the Bay City Rollers did this song in circa 1976 or 1977? Yeah, I'd probably still rank Tiffany's version as the definitive (sorry Tommy James) but think what a funky, disco-y sound BCR would have had. How did the Rubinoos do, incidentally, with their version?

Wow, I'd forgotten about that song. Nice guitar rock, so reminiscent of the early 1970's. One more toke ... On an aside, I heard your signature song at a local restaurant this past weekend -- also from 1971.

Wow, I'd forgotten about that song. Nice guitar rock, so reminiscent of the early 1970's. One more toke ... pgfromwp: Just learned that Jerry Garcia played steel guitar on the Brewer & Shipley album "Tarkio", including "One Toke...". I think the Rubinoos single was the first from Berserkley records to chart on the Hot 100. I'm a huge Tommy James fan. Just finished reading his autobiography "Me, The Mob, and The Music". Interesting read. One of the great things about "I Think We're Alone Now" is that Tommy took the bass line from the song, had it played backwards, and hit the Top 10 with "Mirage". Looking at the Hot 100 for 5/15/77, among the songs that missed the top 40, this one was the first time this band had reached the Hot 100 in 6 years: Sleepwalker - Kinks www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-uRq16lai0Also worth mentioning is The Whistler - Jethro Tull, and the classic rock staple Peter Gabriel - Solesbury Hill. As for Lighthouse's "One Fine Morning", I'm a sucker for horn band songs and the summer/fall of 1971 contained some of my favorites with and without horns. Great to chat with music fans like you. Thanks!

To coincide with one of this week's 70s programs from Premiere, here's a great "lost classic" that failed to reach the Top 40, from the Hot 100 dated May 15, 1971: Hot LoveT. Rex www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQ159f2HRn8The la-la's begin at 1:58 a ha..... There's an odd connection between my pick and "Hot Love". On the 6/5/71 Hot 100 (a few weeks down the road), Billboard would have the T. Rex song at #78 the prior week. Well, #78 was actually "Red Eye Blues" by Red Eye. I still have that 45 I bought way back in May of 1971 when I was 9 years old. The 45 version is so much better than the LP version.

As for Lighthouse's "One Fine Morning", I'm a sucker for horn band songs and the summer/fall of 1971 contained some of my favorites with and without horns. "Get It On"--Chase: Another great brass-heavy song from '71. And, incidentally, the reason that the title of T.Rex's only American hit was changed from "Get It On" to "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" on this side of the Atlantic. I also like the abovementioned Lighthouse track, especially the uncut LP version with the extended intro. There only other US Top 40 hit is also good, and NEVER heard nowadays: "Sunny Days". Reached #34 at the very end of 1972.

One of the great things about "I Think We're Alone Now" is that Tommy took the bass line from the song, had it played backwards, and hit the Top 10 with "Mirage". "Mirage" is such an underrated/underplayed song from 1967. Shameless plug: It will be featured in my next pre-AT40 countdown, two weeks from today.

Offering a lost classic from 5/19/73, which failed to reach Billboard's top 40; it's a great rocking cover of the Chuck Berry hit from summer 1956: "Roll Over Beethoven" - Electric Light Orchestra www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hj2Wqv3dM4

easily one of my 2 or 3 favorite 1973 "shouldabeens", and it was charting right around this time of year. Albert Hammond, "The Free Electric Band" www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvKlUfVb90Y

Both songs should've reached Billboard's Top 40.

Like to recommend a few others: Tufano & Giammarese - Music Everywhere: Only Hot 100 single from the ex-Buckinghams members. www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYgxu-umbI8Beach Boys - California Saga: Another 70s overlooked classic by this band. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmN6R-e9KnwAmerica - Only In Your Heart: Great 45 from the "Homecoming" album. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1biiBG_4fO0Martin Mull - Dueling Tubas: And now for something completely different! www.youtube.com/watch?v=piOAFI8eCdM

I know I've mentioned 4 songs from the 5/19/73 Billboard Hot 100, but there is another song worth noting. Debuting at #71 was Three Dog Night's - version of "Shambala" which would go on to peak at #3. At #87 was the original version of "Shambala" by B. W. Stevenson. His first Hot 100 single would go on to peak at #66. It would be a little over 2 months later that "My Maria" would debut on the Hot 100 and begin its climb to the #9 position. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hv9DwzU3KP0

Offering a lost classic from 5/25/74, which failed to reach Billboard's top 40; it's a nice rendition with modified lyrics of the Mark Dinning hit from early 1960: "Teen Angel" - Wednesday www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFnOLa-G7Iw
