I did enjoy that one. Just goes to show how tough it is to get a hit. Granted, that is not up to the quality of "If You Don't Know Me By Now" or "The Love I Lost", but it has the sound of a hit IMO. As does their next followup to a top 40 hit a year later, "Hope That We Can Together Soon".

To borrow a phrase from Hervard, "Great song!"

Indeed, this was a great song that deserved better results on the charts. But as usual with the late 60's and the entire decade of the 70's, so much competition and so many great songs, that a Top 40 can't possibly include them all. With so many worthy candidates this week, mine would probably be "On The Border" by Al Stewart or "Fly At Night" by Chilliwack. Although these may not be considered as "lost" as the Chicago song.

AOR radio has played this song to death ever since 1971. So like "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John, even though it failed to make the Forty, it is very well known. In fact it's probably the MOST well known song of ELP. Same with James Gang's "Walk Away" If you want something that is truly lost, by an act who had some big hits, go for Bobby Goldsboro's original recording of "And I Love You So" (written by Don McLean). Now THAT's lost!

Yeah this is the first of these lost classics that I know, and a lot. But I think Pete is saying with these lost classics that he has spotlighted is that they should have made the top 40. Certainly this one should have. Another signature song that is not that artists' biggest hit although I slightly prefer what is their biggest hit, "From the Beginning".

Those songs were all before my time, so can't say I've heard a darned one of them other than the ELP song. Curious to check out the T-Rex tune though. "Bang a Gong" is a jam, and I like the few others I've heard of theirs ("Jeepster" comes to mind).

Wahoo - you might like "Metal Guru" - great song by T Rex that was a HUGE hit in England back in the early/mid 70s, but never made any noise here. It was probably my favorite song from that entire year.

So the ELP recording doesn't seem to fit here. Plus, it is unimaginative and lacks a curiosity-factor element for those who may not have heard the song before. It's a selection I would expect from an oldies radio station program director (the root of all evil in radio today). I'd toss out the James Gang selection as well since it is also an over-exposed recording. I love the other 4 though. "Hot Love" is my second favorite T.Rex song (behind "Bang A Gong"). "Pooh" was a top 10 single in my region of the country and should have been a giant nationally. The Seatrain track has aged like fine wine. And the Neil Diamond track still makes me weep towards the end. This time in memory of Donna Summer and Robin Gibb. And then there is a song I believe someone recently mentioned in another thread called "Light Sings" It reminds me of the very young child in 1971 who would be greeted in the morning with the light of sunshine....and this wonderful song complimenting that visual from the AM radio.
