According to Pete's book, there was an announcement saying that 8/18/79 was the first show to have the new jingles, but I didn't notice them today. They were still the older ones.

I heard Tom Clays tune twice on two different AT40 the 70's show previously, so I doubt they have anything against it. You know...if they end up doing 9/4, I would tune in even if just for that segment. Not just for hearing the song on an AT40 show...but for me it has an extra bit of nostalgia because my mom actually owns the record. She also owns the somewhat similarly-themed "The Americans" from early '74. That one has a YouTube clip from an AT40 show, though.

If you are talking about the intros (beginning jingles) that replaced Shuckatoom jingles for almost a month, those didn't start until Sep 22, 1979. By Oct 20, 1979 Shuckatoom returned as the intro and the intro jingles introduced on Sept 22, 1979 were used as the outro (ending jingle).

^Hi Caseyfan, the jingles I'm referring to are the ones within the show, not the beginning or end theme. The ones that lasted from 1979 - 1982. I heard the 9/15/79 show last year on SXM and it did have the new jingles. I just assumed it started on 8/18 since there was a memo by Tom Rounds mentioning that they started on this date.

I did post this on the GMD forum, but I'll pass it here. The Oldies Collection WILL play The Ultimate Oldies Countdown from August 21, 1971 at 9:00 AM (New York time) today and a repeat at 4:25 PM + or - and it WILL play the Tom Clay song. The show can be heard on www.theoldiescollection.com or www.live365.com/stations/133027 . Just a side note I do have an 8-track tape of the album of the same name in good condition.

I prefer the Gordon Sinclairs version, his was the original, as the more popular one just sounds like a radio announcer reading a cue card. But thats just MHO.

I found it strange today that the Archives played Pick Up The Pieces and Fire as 1975 #1's back to back. Aren't the archives supposed to be played, one each hour?

The same thing happened I think when they played the last show from 1979. Because the second archive #1 was an OE, it is by definition out of its normal place in the countdown. So that is always a possibility unless they play it as the third OE. Ok, I have been reading these posts about Tom Clay for about a month and I know the song. What is the issue here? Is it the message of the song itself or is it that Tom Clay replaced Casey as a DJ at some point or something entirely different?

dukedeb: I would classify as BOTH your thoughts are correct. Tom Clay did replace Casey in the Detroit (??) market and beat Casey in the ratings. For the song itself....well it's not a toe tapper, by any means. I remember hearing for the first time driving on the highway in Oklahoma. I had to pull over to the shoulder of the road and give the song my fullest attention without getting into an accident. This song took many by surprise three years after two tragic assassinations. I did request the song late in the year as an oldie, but the DJ refuse to play it. Like "Ohio" and "They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Ha" the song has met an early death on many stations due to complaints.

pandy, thanks.....that explains why that song is the highest peaking song from 1971 that I did not recognize when I first heard it on SXM last year. I had started listening to top 40 radio just weeks after this was popular, did not hear it then or since. So obviously stations did abandon it very quickly and for good.

In this day and age when Obama's approval ratings are at an all-time low and hard-nosed activists are blaming "tolerance of the races" for today's social ills that can only be cured by certain candidates, I'd say ... HELL YEAH! Brian

On the Reel Radio website, there's a WABC aircheck from August 1971 in which Chuck Leonard plays the Tom Clay record-In my opinion,it's fantastic-Unfortunately,a lot of program directors would regard the song as being dated & that's why it doesn't receive recurrent airplay anymore.

IMO the Tom Clay message is timeless re: the events of 2011 i.e. the Arizona shootings, the Norway massacre and sadly others I can't remember now. In just three weeks we have the 10 year anniversary of our worst terrorist attack ever...so the song is as relevant today as it was 40 years ago. I am a child of the 60's and also loved the Jackie DeShannon and Dion versions of the original songs.

Nobody said it has to be a part of "recurrent" airplay or even oldies airplay. I wouldn't play the song in my rotation -- might keep it in the library and play it on request or when a special occassion warrants. But it's still the idea that the song exists, and for us to know what the times were like at the time the show aired. Brian

"for us to know what the times were like when ths show aired".....and to know that, one just needs to look at the songs in a countdown like the one I heard today....that one obviously but also Mercy Mercy Me, Bring the Boys Home and several others that year. There were a lot of issues spilling over into the music of the day back in 71.
