Looking at the Hot 100 for the week of 8/1/70, it doesn't look like there are a lot of big hits bubbling under the Top 40. Hard for me to make any predictions, since I hardly recognize any of the songs.

Hard for me to make any predictions, since I hardly recognize any of the songs. That's OK, I'll take a stab at making a few guesses (assuming it is the Aug. 1, 1970 chart and not the Aug. 8 show): * " Snowbird" by Anne Murray. * "Looking Out My Back Door" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. and anyone who missed this one as a possible extra is a chuckle-head ... * "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Diana Ross. Also, not to spoil the fun, but we had Bobby Sherman, Neil Diamond, Blood Sweat and Tears, Aretha Franklin, The Spinners, Tony Orlando and Dawn, Sugarloaf (who was bubbling under, but still ...) and a cult classic from Christie all below the top 40, but either became major hits or cult classics. To say there was a derth of hits waiting to crack the top 40 this week incorrect. Oh, and although their songs didn't come close to the top 40, Kool and the Gang ("Let the Music Take Your Mind") and Carl Carlton ("Drop By My Place") all might be worth a listen ... and they'd have huge hits later in the decade. Kool and the Gang, of course, had reason to have a "Celebration" more than 10 years later. Brian Brian

As far as a '70s single mentioning Gerald Ford, the closest we get is Dickie Goodman's single "Gerry Ford - A Special Report" (which I bought at its time of release). But it didn't make the top 40. I was referring to mentions by Casey as well and he does mention Gerald Ford in the 12/11/76 show in a story about the Captain & Tennille performing at the White House for President Ford and the Queen of England. I don't make predictions for OEs but for this week's show, Premiere needs to take oldies out and reinsert them as OEs so they can leave the countdown songs alone. The following oldies were played...Alley Oop, a #1 hit from 1960, I'm Walkin, Gentle on My Mind and Can't Buy Me Love. This is the first AT40 in which the Beatles are not in the top 40.

Ah yes--that was the story about how "Muskrat Love" was too inappropriate to be played for the queen, right? That whole thing is laughable--a song about muskrats getting it on, to be played for the queen of England, but yet it was too inappropriate...just bizarre.

The show for 8/4/79 will apparently not be played by either SXM or Premiere this year since this is the week that it would be played. There is a gripping story in it which I heard when it aired in 1979. McFadden & Whitehead were due to leave on American Airlines flight 191 out of Chicago en route to Los Angeles on May 24th of that year. But they agreed to do another interview and delayed their trip a day. That decision saved their lives as that flight crashed upon takeoff, killing all passengers that were on board. Pete, do you have any further info on that tragedy, being a Chicagoan?

As far as this week's optional extras are concerned,I predict that Premiere will give Larry Morgan the week off & this is what we'll hear: 1)."I'm Walkin"-Fats Domino (Original "AT40" Special) 2)."Gentle On My Mind"-Glen Campbell (Original "AT40" Special) 3).."Alley Oop"-Hollywood Argyles (Original "AT40" Special)

But since you asked... www3.gendisasters.com/illinois/6204/chicago-il-jumbo-jet-crashes-take-may-1979There's a chilling photograph with this link that shows the plane as it was rolling, seconds before it crashed. I've never forgotten that picture.

I also predict that the other "AT40 Special",which is "Can't Buy Me Love" by The Beatles will stay in the broadcast.

Ain't No Mountain High Enough & Lookin' Out My Backdoor didn't debut until 8/8 on Billboard's Hot 100. I'm sticking with my guesses and I'm NOT a chuckle-head!!!

Check out the final segment of hour #2; it devotes 7 and a half minutes to playing the long version of "Are You Ready" by Pacific Gas & Electric. Unusual choice! Also, at 5:36 it looks like the full length version of "Maybe" was played. (I'm saying "was" because it could be cut in this weekend's presentation) Yet I see "25 Or 6 To 4" is the single edit.

You are correct about the lengths of those 2 songs which are good almost great songs IMO. Not sure how many songs had long versions available other than 25 or 6 to 4 as you mentioned. Spill the Wine is a nearly 5 minute song as well. But with so many short songs, they had plenty of time to play long versions. Surprised they never played the album/long version of Mama Told me, a #1 song.

Anyone notice Casey id'd "Play That Funky Music" as "Play The Funky Music". Hilarious. Like the "Peggy" character on the Discover card commercials. Of course all of us hardcore AT40 fans have many "slips" like this, but this one particularly tickles me.

I'm sticking with my guesses and I'm NOT a chuckle-head!!! I think you are a little confused here. Per Ultimate Music Database, these were the songs' positions for the Aug. 1, 1970 chart (and all three of my predictions indeed were on that chart): *" Snowbird" by Anne Murray. At No. 45 in its fifth week on the chart. *" Looking Out My Back Door" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Debut at No. 56. * " Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Diana Ross. Debuted at No. 46 this week. Remember, we're a week ahead at this point in AT40. The July 25, 1970 program (which we're hearing this weekend) has information from the Aug. 1, 1970 chart (which we'll hear this weekend). BTW -- all extras stay in, and none get played as extras as mrjukebox suggests. If any of them get deleted, it'll probably be "Alley-Oop" by the Argyles (the least known of the three and except for The True Oldies Channel or golden oldies stations simply is not played anymore, which is OK since I'd rather hear Huey Lewis and the News anyway!). Predictions for the extras:
I'M WALKIN'-Fats Domino (original AT40 extra) CAN'T BUY ME LOVE-Beatles (original AT40 extra) BIG YELLOW TAXI-Joni Mitchell
I also think that "Gentle On My Mind" will stay in the show, but "Alley Oop" will be cut.
