What bad news: "The official online forum for band The Grass Roots is reporting that the group's bass player and original lead singer, Rob Grill, has passed away. He was 67."

Looking back now, playing last week's top 3 to me in 1979 and the early '80's was a waste of a segment. The 12-14 minute segment could have been used for longer version of songs & more extras. A recap of 40-34 is really not a bad idea but it's not the original way it was done. Let's be happy that these 4 hour classics are being rebroadcast finally even if the countdown starts at number 33.

statenislandfan: i completely agree with you. there has NEVER been an occasion where the top 3 songs have dropped out of the countdown, so you definitely will hear them again less than three hours later!!!! I have stated before, if you drop the extras, archives, and recap, you could get the whole Top 40 in the allotted time!

You know this 4 hour show thing that we keep going round and round on is hilarious when you consider that several stations air both the 70s and 80s. So what is the difference between airing a 4 hour show from 1980 versus a 4 hour show from 1979? Uh...next to nothing. I would think that most of those stations would air the 4 hour shows from the 70s if given the option. One final thought....a lot of us think AT40 should have started the 4 hour shows in 1975. Imagine if they had. We would be having these arguments every other week on this thread.

^I agree with you DukeDeb. And if they started in 75, many of my favorite songs that year wouldn't be cut off.

Rob Grill was a fantastic singer. He will be sadly missed. I had to insert a segment for him (as next weeks 60's show is already done) It'll air in the first hour of the show, taking out a bonus track and the original "going to break" tease.

Listening to the 7/8/72 show again, I noticed that Casey reviewed some things from the previous week's chart when they did a special. Does anyone remember him doing that on any other occasion after a special was aired? As an example, he does not do that on the 7/14/79 show coming up(you'll have to take my word for it since the beginning of the show won't be played).

I seem to remember Casey doing it in July 1983 for the week after the special we just heard not too long ago.

Just for shiggles, After hearing the #6 song on the 1972 show, how many of you made the phone call that could save you 15% on your car insurance? :-)

A recap of 40-34 is really not a bad idea but it's not the original way it was done. Let's be happy that these 4 hour classics are being rebroadcast finally even if the countdown starts at number 33. The optional extras without Casey's intros were not part of original broadcast if you want to be technical. Not only should there be a recap of songs from 40 to whatever, they should be in 3 separate montages with original Casey intros in collage!!!
