mkarns is correct...it's apparent that the third hour of the second show -- with the chart date of July 18, 1970 -- is forever lost. Pete, that's a bummer. Do you know if there are any other shows with missing parts to them? wahoo, There was a chance that *could have* happened if it weren't for copies of vinyl shows sent to radio stations. I had heard at some point (maybe 10 years ago) that there were missing master tapes but a few vinyl copies of programs helped complete any missing parts. AT40 was distributed to stations exclusively on reel tapes up to October 1971, however, all hours (except for #3 of the second show) from July 1970 up to October 1971 are accounted for.

That's a shame that it was lost. Of course someone somewhere probably has a copy on tape that they didn't return to AT40. Is this possible Pete?
After all, they just found that World Series Game in someones vaults. (Can't remember who)

That's a shame that it was lost. Of course someone somewhere probably has a copy on tape that they didn't return to AT40. Is this possible Pete? If the first show was heard on seven stations, it's a good possibility that's how many carried the second show. And, according to a few sources, subscribing stations then were required to return the reels containing the program. If a copy of the missing hour still exists, it's likely in the hands of a Watermark insider. For a while, I theorized that the missing third hour master reel was edited down and used as a demonstration tape for selling the show to other stations. But I have a demo from September 19, 1970 and it's completely different from the program. That may be enough evidence to prove early demo tapes were produced and distributed independently from the actual program. And while it's fun to speculate, I just assume we end the speculation with the discovery of the missing tape!

I guess we will never hear a show that actually has a 7-18-70 Top 40 chart, right? The 7-4 and 7-11 AT 40 episodes used the 7-11-70 charts, and I believe the 7-18-70 show used the 7-25-70 chart, is that correct? Dukedeb explained why the charts were a week ahead in a recent post.

I'll go ahead and make a prediction about next week ...
We'll hear a countdown from one end of the 1970s:
* Either the early end, in this case, the program featuring the July 25, 1970 chart.
* Or the late end ... meaning, a program from July 21, 1979.

See that WHNN is playing the 1985 countdown this week, so seeing that the extras have not yet been posted, my predictions:
* "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" by Jim Croce. * "Motorcycle Mama" by Sailcat. * "I Saw the Light" by Todd Rungren (fell out of the top 40)
A pair of backup predictions:
* "Go All the Way" by the Raspberries f. Eric Carmen. * in its first brief run on the chart, before it made its sustained chart run and subsequent cultural impact -- "I Am Woman" by Helen Reddy.

See that WHNN is playing the 1985 countdown this week, so seeing that the extras have not yet been posted, my predictions: They've only done a post-'83 show once before, ever - and that was the 6/22/85 show - thus making this the latest 80s show they'll have done.

Watermark insider? hmmm, Pete, is that code for "ha ha, I have a copy and none of you do, na na na na boo boo"? The "Watermark insider" label is reserved for those who worked with Casey during AT40's formative years. Unfortunately, I'm not a part of that exclusive group. And even if I had this missing relic, there's no way I would withhold it. However, I would love to, literally, spend some time wandering the AT40 master-tape archives to search for it.

Well, WHNN threw us a curve with their AT40 choice this week so here's the confirmed extras for 7/8/1972:
"You Don't Mess Around With Jim" - Jim Croce "It's Too Late" - Carole King (original AT40 extra) "Popcorn" - Hot Butter

You are right that we will not hear an AT40 with the chart for 7/18/70 but the reason is different. The 7/4/70 show used the chart for 7/11/70 and the 7/11/70 show used the 7/18/70 chart. That show is not currently available to air as stated in posts above.

Hi everyone...found this great site around Memorial Day...grew up north of Boston and an AT 40 fan since around 74 when I had to find an alternative to WRKO's sunday morning public affairs programming...at the other end of the dial was Casey on WMEX and i've been hooked ever since...again a terrific site... thanks to all of you out there!!

kahunaburger61, thank you for providing the link. Regarding the July 8, 1972 program, after discovering AT40 in April 1971 while traveling, this was the first regular weekly show that I was able to listen to (and tape record) in its entirety. Imagine week after week -- and month after month -- trying to listen to the program and coming up empty for more than a year. Very frustrating to say the least! Until Casey finally landed in Chicago. During this program, he welcomed WCFL-AM as a new affiliate, the radio station where I heard AT40 on Saturday nights, from 1-4 a.m. May be off top & stuff but how did WLS finally overtake WCFL in top 40 radio wars Pete?

For next week's show I'll go with July 21, 1973 when "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" hit #1. Believe AT40-the 70's has never played a July '73 show.

Is that September 19, 1970 demo the same that is heard on the home page for www.charismusicgroup.com ? A couple weeks ago, I visited the site and was excited to hear Casey counting down the the hits from September 19, 1970. A very special week for me (the week I was born). ;D When I was viewing the cue sheet for this week, I noticed that nothing really matches up except the chart positions. Different commercial breaks, different extras. The hour starts up with Anne Murray's "Snowbird" at #13 while the cue sheet identifies "(I Know) I'm Losing You" by Rare Earth at #14 to open the 3rd hour.
