I'm getting positively giddy over the upcoming '71 show. Just LOVE the really early AT40s. I don't get too excited for the early 70's shows since they were before my time. But this show is quite good -- a number of classic hits and/or artists, and some really good original extras (though "Mule Train" is rather odd to put it lightly). One of the highlights for me--Casey is in full "groovy Casey" mode with his intro to #25: "Chick-a-Boom, Chick-a-Boom..." -- just fantastic

Has to be the most sexually suggestive song to ever come from a kid's TV show! As a just-turned-13-year-old at the time, the story of a 'chick' methodically shedding her black bikini, even if only in a 'crazy dream', certainly piqued MY interest...

Question for the AT40 historians--was this 4/16/71 show the first one to be aired at the end of the chart week rather than st the start of said week? I know that they did make that change in April of '71 the week following a 'special' show.

I think May 8, 1971 was the first to be aired with the chart and airdate weeks lining up. The 5/1/71 chart was aired a week early as was done before (the last weekend in April), and for the first weekend in May AT40 did its first special show.

Near the end of the 2nd hour in the show from 4/17/1971, after playing "Help Me Make it Through the Night" by Sammi Smith at #15, Casey said "We're countin' down the hits the way they're ranked on Billboard's national charts." Then, interestingly, he played the next two songs at positions that did not match their Billboard chart positions for Apr 17. Oooops!!

So this one was still before the change. Must have been just a week or two before the switch.

I recalled it as April, but it was actually early in May.

Yes, as MKARNS said a couple posts above, the first show where the chart date and air date aligned was on the weekend of May 8, 1971.

The special that aired on the weekend of 5/1/1971 was the Top 40 Acts Of The Rock Era. The chart dated 5/1/1971 aired on the weekend of 4/24/1971, so no chart was actually skipped.
While I really love the later years of the 1970s, I enjoy the earlier decade shows also. Looking forward to hearing them all in order later this year. 🙂
