4-hour 1979 available on the WPAC "Mornings" player for 24 hours. Well, I missed that one, but tell me, did WPNC play a song from 1979 before the show started (as for at least the past two weeks, they have played a song from the same year before the broadcast).

This week's presentations (Weekend of April 18-19, 2020): April 17, 1971 with mono2stereo conversion by Ken Martin. 1971-If you're in quarantine with a small group of people and if you haven't been to the grocery store lately, you might be in trouble next week if your name is Tim. Casey may have mentioned that the songwriter Rupert Holmes deliberately made "Timothy" ambiguous to call attention to the band, stir up controversy. Also thought that I read somewhere Rupert said in an interview that Timothy was "me and Joe's" donkey.

Casey may have mentioned that the songwriter Rupert Holmes deliberately made "Timothy" ambiguous to call attention to the band, stir up controversy. Also thought that I read somewhere Rupert said in an interview that Timothy was "me and Joe's" donkey. "Timothy" was released a full year before it finally hit the top 40 nationally. I'm going through old 'Billboard' issues online from 50 years ago once per week and there was a Scepter Records ad for the single in one of the April 1970 issues.

Despite the fact that it was banned by several radio stations,"Timothy" peaked at # 17 in the spring of 1971.

Optional extras for this week's shows:
4/17/71 Hour #1: "You're My (Soul And Inspiration)" - The Righteous Brothers Hour #2: "Mule Train" - Frankie Laine (original AT40 extra) Hour #3: "Sleep Walk" - Santo & Johnny (original AT40 extra)
Note: "Mule Train" and "Sleep Walk", which stayed in the show for both 2011 and 2013 airings, get demoted to optional extra status while "Harper Valley P.T.A.", which was an optional extra in both years, will stay in the show. The original optional extras ("Me And You And A Dog Named Boo" and "Want Ads") have been replaced.
BTW, If you're wondering about the Righteous Brothers song, I'm guessing it's a Ken Martin creation of Casey doing the #1 song of five years ago (it was #1 on 4/16/66).
4/22/78 Hour #1: "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad" - Meat Loaf (#46) Hour #2: "Take A Chance On Me" - ABBA (#69; highest debut) Hour #3: "Tumbling Dice" - Linda Ronstadt (#70)
(no change to the '78 show extas)

Optional extra guesses from 49 years ago:
--Ain't No Sunshine-Bill Withers --Want Ads-Honey Cone --Right on the Tip of My Tongue-Brenda and the Tabulations
I decided to go with 3 soul records because that was one of my favorite genres back then. The Withers song is almost a given.
Optionals from 42 years ago:
--Every Kinda People-Robert Palmer --Baker Street-Gerry Rafferty --Because the Night-Patti Smith

Didn't get that reference, as I've never read "On the Beach". I remember some English classes when I was in junior/senior high school reading it, but not mine. Though somebody at KLFM should have taken another look at the chart. "Space Oddity" was played as an "optional extra" at the end of hour 2--shortly after it was heard in the countdown. It was then immediately followed by Premiere's designated extra "My Love". They tend to do that a lot--last week it was "All by Myself" that got played as a KLFM extra and then later on the '76 show. "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" got the 'double play' treatment the week before on the '75 show. As for "On the Beach", it was one of the few cases where I thought the movie (which stars Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, and Anthony Perkins) captures the novel it is based on quite well. Surprised I haven't seen it show up on Turner Classic Movies during this stay-at-home time. Pretty depressing movie, though: (spoiler alert) Everyone dies or is about to die at the end. Last year they tended to air extras from the opposite time of year (October songs in April and vice versa), but this airing of songs already in the countdown can lead to overkill.

For everyone who assumed they would use "Ain't No Sunshine" this week, 1972 should be coming up either next week or the week after that and "Lean On Me" debuted on the Hot 100 on 4/22/72 so they could play it in his memory without even going "out of order".

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess - 4/29/72 2nd Guess - 4/27/74
It should be a run of early 70's shows starting this weekend with the 1971 show. I would expect to get 1972, 73, and 74 in the weeks following (not necessarily in that order, but it actually won't be a surprise if it is in that order). The most recent spin for 4/29/72 was in 2016.

I'm getting positively giddy over the upcoming '71 show. Just LOVE the really early AT40s.
