9/22/73 aired two days after singer Jim Croce died in a plane crash. I remember Casey memorializing Croce before playing "I Got a Name", when it debuted on the 40 (at #40) three weeks later, 10/13/73.

These were the optional extras back in 2012 (we'll see if they stay put this airing or if any will change):
Hour #1: "Basketball Jones" - Cheech & Chong Featuring Tyrone Shoelaces (#41) Hour #2: "Nutbush City Limits" - Ike & Tina Turner (#61) Hour #3: "Paper Roses" - Marie Osmond (#72)

Not sure if they'll replace any extras, but some other good candidates:
Billy Preston - "Space Race" (#75 highest debut) Bob Dylan - "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" (#44) Bobby Goldsboro - "Summer" (#60)

My candidates would be:
* “I Got a Name” — Jim Croce. Along with the tribute aired several weeks later. * “Knocking On Heaven’s Door” — Bob Dylan. * “Heartbeat — It’s a Lovebeat” — The DeFranco Family f. Tony DeFranco.

These were the Premiere Extras when this show aired in 2014 Hour #1: "Nadia's Theme" - Barry De Vorzon & Perry Botkin Jr. Optional extras of the 1976 show stay the same. Interesting that they referenced both Bless the Beasts & Children and The Young & the Restless, but no mention of young Miss Comenici, the actual reason the song was re-titled "Nadia's Theme" and released as a single. Also of note: 2 of the artists Paul Davis namechecks in "Superstar" are in the countdown (Elton John, Linda Ronstadt).

That composition was originally called "Cotton's Dream" when included in the 1971 film "Bless the Beasts and Children"; it was of course renamed in 1976 for the gymnast and the soap opera, which as mentioned in Larry's intro still plays the song five times weekly. The title song from BTBAC was recorded by the Carpenters and released as the B-side of "Superstar", but got enough airplay to chart on its own. If we get the September 29, 1984 AT40 in a couple of weeks we'll hear it as a Long Distance Dedication.

Another sort-of-oddity: Casey mentions there are "a couple" of new tunes, but as they are at #'s 40 and 39, respectively, he doesn't tag the Alan Parsons tune (a favorite lost 45 of mine) as the highest debut.
Also, Casey IDs the singer on the Parsons hit as "John Mills"; it was John Miles, who wouldn't have a US Top 40 hit under his own name until the following year.

"Basketball Jones" was a parody of "Love Jones" by The Brighter Side Of Darkness which had been a top forty hit in early 1973.

So September 22, 1973 it apparently is. I was hoping for 9/16/72 and 9/29/73 this month. Looks like I have to wait at least another year. As we head into the final 3 months of 2019, what surveys from 1970-1971-1972 have the best chances of getting the mono2stereo conversion from Ken Martin? October: 1970 has 10/17 and 10/24 not converted, but 1970 already had a show in August and September, so highly unlikely we get another in Oct. 1971 has all October shows converted already. 9/25 has not been converted, but they just had 8/21 played, so this is unlikely. 1972 has 10/14 as only show not converted, this looks like good possibility. I give it 80% chance. November: 1970 has 11/14 and 11/28 not converted. 11/14 unlikely, too soon and 11/28 a slightly better chance, maybe 20% 1971 has 11/27. This show has best chance of being converted of remaining unconverted 1971 shows for 2019. 1972 has 11/11 as only unconverted show. If 10/14/72 is not played, 11/11 will be 100%. December: 1970 has 12/12 as only unconverted show. This show has best chance of remaining 1970 shows this year. 1971 has 12/4 as only unconverted show. They are not going to go "back to back" with 1970 and 1971, so this show only has a shot if 12/12/70 will not played. 1972 has 12/16 as only unconverted show. 10/14 or 11/11 should be played, 12/16 has to wait till another year. In December I will update the remaining mono shows from all months waiting for the mono2stereo conversion from Ken. Super Job Ken!

This show was re-aired a year later in 2014 but I didn't record it. Was that in stereo?

^I was always under the impression that all of these shows had been converted to stereo when they were initially remastered for the AT40 70s classic series. Most of them sound like they are now in stereo, including the shows that aired before Ken Martin started doing the conversion. Apparently that's not the case?

According to my info obtained from Ken, the first mono2stereo conversion was done on the 8/12/72 show in 2014. The first discussion about stereo in this forum was found on page 1009. We need clarification from Pete or somebody really involved to answer how some songs were stereo on those shows. According to my records, the 11/18/72 show re-aired in 2015 was done by Ken with mono2stereo. Again, sorry to say, I missed that one also.

Matt, That's what I thought when I started listening in late 2015 - shoot, I've missed 8 years of the old mono surveys re-done in stereo. I sent an email to Ken at his radio station and he graciously answered my question (forgot the question) and he said his mono2stereo conversions did not start until the 8/12/72 show aired in 2014. If somebody else did some conversion to stereo before Ken, we need to hear from them.

I've never been clear though on what he did versus what others did (I know Ken did post at some point that he has assisted with much of the remastering of shows in recent years).

From memory - sometime in late 2013 the mono shows were presented in mostly stereo. Under Casey's intros & outros the music was in mono - the remaining music was replaced with a stereo version. I assume Shannon did these, but don't know that for fact. This continued until mid 2014 when Ken introduced his method of pulling Casey's vocals from the recordings - allowing him to completely replace the entire song in stereo.
