A quick revival of the old Country Connections, in response to the Aug. 31, 1974, question letters on Hot 100 chart records.
At this time in 1974:
* Most No. 1 singles since the start of the chart: Eddy Arnold, with 28 between 1947-1968. Conway Twitty would be the first (of several artists) to pass him, doing so in the early 1980s.
* Most Top 10 singles since the start of the chart: Eddy Arnold (once again) with 90 from his first chart hit in 1945 (when there was only a top 10, tracking jukebox plays) and 1969 ("They Don't Make Love Like They Used To." He'd later go on to have two more, in 1980. At this point, Ernest Tubb and Red Foley each had 56 top 10 hits between the start of the country chart in 1944 and 1963 (including collaborations). Johnny Cash had 47 top 10s (between 1955 and his then-most recent one in 1973, including collaborations), while George Jones had 44 songs -- including duets -- reach the top 10.
(To compare: Elvis Presley, the man who had the most top 10 singles during the Hot 100's Rock Era, had 20 of his releases reach the top 10, the last three coming since 1971 (with "Help Me" on its way down the chart after having peaked earlier in August).)
Tubb, Jones and the Man in Black each went on to have additional top 10 hits in the years since Aug. 31, 1974 (Red Foley's last top 10 hit was in 1956, and he died in 1968), but only George Strait would crack the all-time top 5 during a career that was strictly Army and regional at this point.
* Most No. 1 hits since 1970: Of the 129 singles that reached No. 1 to this point:
-- Charley Pride had 11 chart toppers between 1970 ("Is Anybody Goin' To San Antone") and 1973 ("Amazing Love"), more than anyone else. He'd go on to have the most solo No. 1 hits of any other country singer during the 1970s, with 20. (Incidentally, 1974 was the only year during the decade where he did not reach No. 1 at least one time.)
This tied Pride with Conway Twitty with 11 solo and duet No. 1 hits, starting with 1970's "Hello Darlin'" to his duet with Loretta Lynn, "As Soon As I Hang Up the Phone," which was the No. 1 hit two weeks earlier. Twitty went on to be the overall No. 1 chart champ of the 1970s with 24 No. 1 hits -- 19 solo and five with Loretta Lynn, with 1978 the only year he missed out.
-- Sonny James and Merle Haggard were tied for third with 10 each since 1970. Both had had recent No. 1 singles and at one point knocked each other out of the top spot. Sonny's 1970s success was bookended by "It's Just a Matter Of Time" in 1970 and, from just a few months earlier, "Is It Wrong (For Loving You). Haggard's first No. 1 hit of the decade came with "The Fightin' Side Of Me" in March 1970; his most recent No. 1 song as of Aug. 31, 1974 had just been a No. 1 song and fell to No. 2 this week: "The Old Man From the Mountain."
A P.S. that wasn't a question relating to the Hot 100 this week -- although I'm sure at several points Casey was asked about the most successful vocal group/band in the rock era/chart history -- but as far as country acts go, the most successful vocal group or band at this point was (far and away) the Statler Brothers. They were one of the few games in town at this point, and they were still almost four years away from their first No. 1 hit. (To compare, the Oak Ridge Boys were still a country gospel group and Alabama was still a bar band in their home state.) They had two No. 2 hits, both spending four weeks in the runner-up spot: "Flowers On the Wall" in January 1966 and "Do You Remember These" in the spring of 1972.)
That's how it stood on the country chart as of Labor Day weekend 1974. Now -- as Casey goes to help Jerry Lewis with the Muscular Dystrophy Association's telethon -- on with the countdown ... .

With 3 shows from Premiere this weekend (9/5/70, 9/9/78 and 9/7/85) there's bound to be some overlap in artist performances. And there is. These artists are working double duty this weekend... *Tina Turner (with Ike & the Ikettes, "I Want To Take You Higher" and "We Don't Need Another Hero") *Billy Joel ("She's Always A Woman" and "You're Only Human") *Godley & Creme (as Hotlegs, "Neanderthal Man" and "Cry") *Anne Murray ("Snowbird" and "You Needed Me") *Mick Jagger (with the Rolling Stones, "Miss You" and with David Bowie, "Dancing In The Street") *Aretha Franklin ("Don't Play That Song" and "Freeway Of Love") *Honorable mention goes to Neil Diamond who had two songs on the 9/5/70 countdown ("Cracklin' Rosie" and "Solitary Man") *And subtract 10 points from your score if you thought John Paul Young ("Love Is In The Air") and Paul Young ("Everytime You Go Away") was the same person.

Near miss: The Who ("Summertime Blues" and the Assembled Multitude's cover of "Overture From 'Tommy'" in 1970, at #41 with "Who Are You" in 1978)

Here's the optional extras of the 1970 show:
Hour #1: "Help!" - The Beatles Hour #2: "Second Hand Rose" - Barbra Streisand (original extra) Hour #3: "Dominique" - The Singing Nun (original extra)
All other original extras will remain in the show.
Optional extras of the 1978 show stay the same.

*Godley & Creme (as Hotlegs, "Neanderthal Man" and "Cry") good catch on Hotlegs--not many know the Hotlegs>10cc>Godley and Creme progression.

"Help!" was still at number one that week back in 1965.

Is there a chance that we could get 9-15-79 or 9-22-79 in the next week or two?

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess - 9/15/79 2nd Guess - 9/16/72
1979 now has the longest drought in the series, with '76 and '72 second and third. I think 1976 waits a week or two.

Obviously Hoggy is a great bet for 1978, any other stations confirmed yet? KOKZ is airing 1978 Saturday 10 am eastern. WMGN is going with 1978 Saturday night 10 pm.
I expect KKLZ Las Vegas to air '78 show Sunday at 10 am. KLFM is going with 9/5/70 Friday night.
