On the countdown from 8/3/74,Casey read a QL (Question Letter) from a listener who asked about the biggest drop a song took from the number one position-The answer was "The Sounds Of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel which had gone to # 1 for a week in January 1966-It fell to # 2 & then returned to # 1 before dropping to # 12. In late 1974,two songs were tied for taking a bigger plunge from the number one spot-They were "Nothing From Nothing" by Billy Preston & "Then Came You" by Dionne Warwick & The Spinners-They both dropped from # 1 all the way down to # 15. It's odd that question came just weeks before six songs, including the ones you mentioned, took drops from #1 as big (or bigger, in the case of the two 1-15 dropping songs) as "The Sounds Of Silence", which, up to that point, was the only song to fall out of the Top Ten from #1.

Random observation while listening to 8/3/74: "Wild Thing" by The Troggs ('66) has the 'distinction', so to speak, of having three of the worst remakes: 'Senator Bobby' in '67 (novelty); Fancy, which debuted on this show (cheesy); and Sam Kinison (awful). Not to mention the equally horrible unrelated song with the same title by Tone Loc...

The only differences I detected was that the opening and closing AT40 themes were converted to stereo as were the jingles inside the countdown. Songs appeared the same to me. Ken did not get an opening credit for mono2stereo conversion, but he did get a "digitally re-mastered" credit at the end along with Shannon. Most of the songs were already stereo in the original countdown. It was a excellent re-mastering. This weeks show will be the premiere "mono2stereo" conversion of 8/01/70 show and should be a real blast!
Wasn't AT40 already being broadcast in stereo by July 1973? Why would there need to be a mono2stereo conversion of a show that's already in stereo? Starting on 02.24.73 - AT40 started the stereo shows. However - not all 45's were released in stereo back then so some AT40 songs were still aired in mono. From my memory (that's dangerous) Ken has previously redone some early '73 stereo show(s) to at least replace any remaining mono songs - and possibly updating even the stereo songs to crisper versions. The song versions Ken uses sound so good - I wish he updated the songs for all the 70's shows.

Optional extras for 8/1/70: Hour #1: "It's Not Unusual" - Tom Jones Hour #2: "Big Girls Don't Cry" - The Four Seasons Hour #3: "Alley Oop" - The Hollywood Argyles The OE's for 8/3/74 are the same as the 2017 airing. I loved the show, it sounded great!
I do wonder why they chose to repeat the Bob Crewe story about how he got the inspiration to write "Big Girls Don't Cry" from watching a late night film with Joan Crawford making that statement. This is one of my favorite stories, but it was from the 7.25.70 show and included there. The 8.01.70 show had a extra by Fats Domino, "I'm Walking" . Easy to understand why they opted to exclude that one, I'm probably the only person here old enough to have heard that song in it's heyday. I guess they did not want to get Larry Morgan involved and keep the extras all voiced by Casey.

"I'm Walking" is not excluded, it remains in the 1970 show. As for the '1974 show, the stream this week on WPAC is perfect--nothing from the show got cut off at the end.

in the 1970 show, Casey refers to "Ball of Confusion" as the Temptations' "4th protest song in a row". Huh? I'd hardly call "Can't Get Next to You" or "Psychedelic Shack" protest songs.

There were a lot of great R&B and Soul songs on that 1970 show. One in particular was "Patches" by Clarence Carter. Several years ago, I bought a 4-Disc compilation at The Half Price Book Store called "Reader's Digest: American Pie." It had a lot of story songs ranging from the 50's to the 80's. "Patches" was one of the songs on there. It's kind of strange that Clarence Carter went from "Patches" in 1970 to "Strokin" in 1985.

Prior to "Patches", Carther's biggest pop hit had been 1968's "Slip Away", about having an illicit affair, that reached #6 that summer.

The show had just started and I stepped aside to get a cold drink and missed it. Another extra not mentioned as being included was Glen Campbell "Gentle on My Mind". Boat load of extras this show. In the original show they played the LONG version 7.39 of "Are You Ready". That was cut down to 2 minutes. OK by me, the LONG version was really way too long and did not add anything of value, IMO.
