Actually last weekend's SXM countdown was 1/17/76, this week's Premiere countdown is 1/24/76. Yes all but a handful of the songs will be the same, but it won't be the same show. Yea Matt. After I typed that message, I had forgotten about the AT 40 SXM thread on here. So went and checked - yes that was the show I heard (1/17/76) I knew this one was one week later.. Just thought it was strange hearing back-to-back weeks on consecutive weekends on different networks.

I'm curious what we consider the five dirtiest ever played on AT40 were. Chuck Berry's 'dirty' live version of "Reelin' and Rockin'" from early '73 would get my vote, but I don't recall whether AT40 ever played the full "London Sessions" version. Even if they didn't, the edited version that omits several of the most explicit of the '...looked at my watch and it was...' time intervals was still pretty risque. Dirty ol' Chuck wasn't talking about dancing. On the chart for the first seven weeks of 1973, peaking at 27 in its final week in the 40. Oddly, Pete's book doesn't indicate that Watermark ever sent out a warning about the song to affiliates, as they did with some other controversial or 'sexy' songs.

To the best of my knowledge, no lyric-content memo was issued for Chuck Berry in 1973.

The weekend of 1/24/1976 marked two debuts for Donny and Marie. Their hit Deep Purple Dreams debuted in the top 40 at #36 and their TV show debuted on Friday 1/23 featuring Bob Hope, Olivia Newton-John (#30) and KC & the Sunshine Band (#35) as guests. "Deep Purple" debuted after "Tracks of My Tears" by Linda Ronstadt, whom Casey referred to as the "remake queen of the 70s". But Donny and Marie also had claims on similar regal titles, as most of their solo and duo hits that decade were covers, including this week's.

I've always been struck by how similar Donny and Marie's "Deep Purple" is to the '63 Nino Tempo & April Stevens original. Even the backing track sounds almost the same. On a related note, I kept waiting for them to cover "Dominique", but that never happened (joke)...

The "I got some on my finger so I wiped it on the wall" bit was arguably the dirtiest/ickiest line and I def heard it.

None of them ran longer than 4:30. If you heard the long version it must have been edited into the show after the fact.

The granddaddy of all "class songs" is in this week's countdown. I wonder how many high schools' Class of 1976 chose Paul Anka's "Times of Your Life."

All this talk about dirty songs etc. is hilarious. AT40 edits songs or sends out memos about them, the BBC does not play Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" which nonetheless becomes the #1 hit of 1984 in the UK. A lot of the listeners of pop radio are adolescents and young adults who when it comes to risque songs, eat it up. The powers that be were trying to make pop radio an extension of church. Like I said, it is really hilarious when you consider it is akin to trying to stop gushing water.

This week's 1976 show included "Love Rollercoaster" by Ohio Players. Whenever I hear that song I remember the urban legend from back then which said a scream heard in the song was from a woman being murdered in a room near the recording studio.

On this week's countdown from 1/24/76,Casey mentioned that Linda Ronstadt had reached the top five in 1975 with remakes of "You're No Good" & "Heat Wave"-However,he forgot to mention "When Will I Be Loved" which peaked at # 2.

I always thought it was someone being shot outside the studio (in a hallway).
