Melanie (Safka) had died at age 76. She would have been 77 on Feb. 3. On this date in 1972 she had 3 songs on the Hot 100. Four weeks later (week ending 2/26/72) all three would be in the top 40: Her December 1971/January 1972 #1 smash "Brand New Key" in its final week on both the 40 and the 100; follow-up "Ring the Living Bell"; and a release on a former label, "The Nickel Song". Didn't Casey have a story about her on one of the shows this past weekend?

I could've sworn I heard the previous week's 1976 countdown on SXM last weekend.

Should we get a 1972 show in the next few weeks, “Ring the Living Bell” or “The Nickel Song” could be an optional extra as a tribute.

I'll go with 2/2/74 over 1/29/72 & 1/29/77 for next weekend. 2/2/74 was last aired by Premiere in 2018. Also, the 1972 show last aired in 2018. 1/29/77 last aired in 2019. I'll go with 1977 for the B show.

2 weeks in a row the A or only show offered has "Somewhere in the Night" in the show. Another song in the 1/20/79 show could be part of such a double if it has not been already. That's "American Pie" and with the whacky January schedule of shows, it could be shows with the long version of Pie in back to back weeks with either the 1/8/72 or 1/22/72 show paired up with the 1979 show. Those 1972 shows also featured the 8+ minute version.
What happened toward the end of this show is a perfect example of how screwed up things had gotten by early 1976. They cut "Love to Love You Baby" all the way down to 2 minutes and change which is less than half the length of the 45. And then right after that, they play an extra by Donovan. Love to was obviously edited to make room for the extra. So here is a top 5 record being seriously edited. It's obviously a big hit that a lot of people would want to hear and yet they are doing that. Makes no sense at all!

Remember, though, that "Love To Love You Baby" was also the dirtiest song to hit the Top 40 in 2.5 years and (at the time at least) one of the five dirtiest to ever get played on AT40. They may have wanted to play as little of it as possible to pacify any stations that didn't play it at all.

There's not much to the song other than Donna singing "love to love you baby."

The troika of 'expressive' top 40 hits!

I'm curious what we consider the five dirtiest ever played on AT40 were.

I could've sworn I heard the previous week's 1976 countdown on SXM last weekend. You did. 🙂 Actually last weekend's SXM countdown was 1/17/76, this week's Premiere countdown is 1/24/76. Yes all but a handful of the songs will be the same, but it won't be the same show.
