"Theme from 'Shaft'" by Isaac Hayes was the # 1 song on 11/27/71-One of the background singers was Telma Hopkins who was a member of Tony Orlando & Dawn-Per air personality/author Norm N.Nite,Hopkins was a long time member of Hayes' back up group Hot Buttered Soul. I don’t know if it was acknowledged already. A related recent death who helped make Shaft (both the movie and tv series) a success in the early 70s: Richard Roundtree died last month Oct. 24 at the age of 81 from pancreatic cancer in Los Angeles. His occasional contributions to the music world were an album released in 1972 called ‘The Man From Shaft’ and 2 additional singles: a)Goodnight My Love c/w Pledging My Love (1973) & b)This Magic Moment c/w So Much in Love covers (1976)

Just saw a hint this weekend's AT40: The 70's show is from December 4, 1976. The #1 record that week "Tonight's The Night" was banned from a number of radio stations for questionable lyrics to the "Come Inside......." verse.

Well there continues to be more unfortunate editing on the 3-hour 70's shows (especially noticeable on the 11/17/73 and 11/27/71 shows, which didn't have such edits in their previous airings). Once again, commercial breaks in odd places and several of the split logos, teasers, etc. removed. Too bad, because it has taken away from the authenticity of these shows and therefore diminished their appeal IMHO -- much like the edits that SXM has been doing to the 70's on 7 airings for several years now.

I understand what you’re saying. I’ll always be an advocate for AT40 shows that are complete, undoctored and played as originally produced. Fortunately, there are many who choose to preserve them in that way. And even though Premiere and XM present the shows using their own controls, there are still numerous reasons to be grateful that vintage AT40 countdowns continue to be broadcast decades later.

I can't recall any station that would've normally played the song 'banning' it back in '76, but I do seem to recall from my avid AM nighttime listening back then a few who edited out that line. If memory serves, KOMA in OKC (whose 50K watt signal covered the western half of the U.S. between sundown and sunrise) was one such station.

This weekend's show is from December 4, 1976. Optional extras:
"Blinded By The Light" Manfred Mann's Earth Band "Family Affair" Sly & The Family Stone "Car Wash" Rose Royce
Extras are the same as when show was last aired by Premiere in 2013.
"Family Affair" was the #1 song on December 4, 1971.

Agree Pete, and I hope I don't sound ungrateful for the re-broadcasting of these shows each week--the classic AT40s have become a regular part of my weekends over the past 15 years, and maybe that's what makes me more passionate about it. I just feel all this latest editing seems unnecessary, since for the first 10+ years of the 70s series, there was no such editing (other than songs being shortened and some of the original extras being extracted as optional extras, but I totally get those edits and don't have a problem with them) and there hasn't been any editing of the 80s shows (with one exception in the last couple years). As a long time fan of the original AT40 shows, the biggest appeal is Casey himself and these edits remove parts of Casey, but I'm trying to figure out what the value in that is? If it's just to hear a few more seconds of some of the songs, it doesn't seem worth losing Casey's speaking parts to do so. Just one man's opinion I know. I'm guessing there are others that feel differently, but I do feel the better product is with more of the original presentation and less of Casey getting edited out in places.

Some have supposed that the edits are to make the shows "fit" into Premiere Subscriber Stations' flow regarding content and commercials, but that is BOGUS (I say) because of just what Matt has said . . . that the shows aired "untouched" for several years before someone started "messing" with them. I bet it's just a matter of time before the `80s shows begin to get the same screwy editing treatment that the `70s shows have received. I've wondered whether Premiere (and XM) do it in order to help the original shows keep their value to collectors and/or sellers. At any rate count me in as one who very much prefers to hear the shows as they were produced originally by AT40, warts and all, and NOT as someone has edited them to sound. Mono shows should be in mono. Content should be as it was produced (in the correct order, without moving stuff around to suit whomever), and without "splicing in" Casey's voice saying things that were not said in the original version of the show.

About 10 years ago there were several stations/affiliates that posted the Premiere cue sheets (Not the original cue sheets found on the Charis site, mind you, but the sheets for the current series) for each weeks shows. Are there any stations that still do so, or is there a way to view them? It would be interesting to see how many seconds are being shaved off of each segment, or even cumulatively, for each episode compared to their (for example) 2020, 2016, or even 2013 airings.

An AT40 chart trivia question…
Q: Between 1970-1995, how many times on corresponding surveys did the #40 single originate from the #1 album? A: At least once, on December 4, 1976.

Kudos to Ken Martin of WTOJ for supersizing the "AT40" countdowns from the 70's-Hope he continues to do this in 2024.
