Good he thanked Gordon Elliot for sitting in with Casey Kasem (Sept 8, 1979)

A little 1974 chart trivia for September 7:
Once peaking on the survey, three of the four ‘new’ singles among this week’s Top 40… *Blue Swede’s “Never My Love *Mac Davis’ “Stop And Smell The Roses” *Tony Orlando & Dawn’s “Steppin’ Out” …took a one-week, 20+ position chart drop, with Dawn making the most significant fall, from #7 to #48.

Mac's 'helluva woman' would spend one more week in the 40 at 38 before leaving for a second, final time. The latter part of '74 had some STRANGE chart movements for sure.

And the first 5 of the 7 #1 hits that fell from the top out of the top 10 the next week in the fall of 1974 are in this show. If only Paul Anka had one of them huh!

Like when Bachman Turner Overdrive's "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" moved back into the top 10 after almost falling off the top 40 - thanks to the "Free Wheelin'" B side?

9/7/1974...Mac Davis has 2 entries - 1 new at #40 ("Stop and Smell The Roses") and a re-entry at #36 ("One Hell of a Woman"). I wonder what caused that "One Woman" song by Mac Davis to re-enter the top 40. There wasn't a B-side tied to this. Does anyone know whether Keith Richards ever brought legal action against Mac Davis and Mark James, writers of "One Hell of a Woman", for lifting the guitar riff from "Satisfaction"? Thanks for the grid. Billboard was really the outlier here. A 'helluva' strange run.

Interesting bit of trivia:"Stop & Smell The Roses" was written by Mac Davis & Doc Severinsen who conducted the orchestra on "The Tonight Show" during the Johnny Carson era.

Thanks for the grid. Billboard was really the outlier here. A 'helluva' strange run. Those last three weeks of August are the true outliers. Did anyone tweak the methodology during that time? I wonder... did any other songs have strange chart movements during those weeks? Odd rebounds, weird gains coming to a stall-out or extreme drops?

On the same week (11/9/74), Tony Orlando and Dawn's "Steppin' Out" and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" both fell right out of the top 40 from #7 and #8. Mac's "Stop and Smell the Roses" dropped almost as far, from #9 to #31.
