On this past weekend's episode of "Crap From The Past", the theme was songs that only spent a week in the top 40 on the Billboard charts. There were around 20 songs that were played, and that got me wondering:
Can somebody provide a list of songs that only spent one week in the top 40 (as in played only once on AT40)?

On last weekend's AT40: The '80s show, Casey mentioned "Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine. I forgot the other song that he mentioned, but I think that spent a week in the Top 40.

No, the other song he mentioned (Elton John's "Don't You Wanna Play this Game No More?") spent two weeks in the top 40, peaking at #39 in 1980. Casey mentioned that in tandem with "Teddy Bear" as they were the only two occasions up until then when only one song debuted on AT40. (The only new entrant on that 10/19/85 show was Mr. Mister's "Broken Wings", which ultimately hit #1.)

Correction:The name of the group that did "Back When My Hair Was Short" was Gunhill Road-That's the name of an actual street in the Bronx,NY.

I'd also add "Jones vs. Jones" by Kool & the Gang and "Two Hearts" by Stephanie Mills & Teddy Pendergrass as songs that had only one week on AT40, in the summer of 1981. They actually were in the top 40 for two weeks, but one of those weeks was a special countdown. And in summer 1983, "It's Inevitable" by Charlie was in the top 40 for two weeks but only played in one of those weeks; I think because the second week had a guest host (Keri Tombazian) who played Diana Ross' "Pieces of Ice" in that spot by mistake.
And speaking of CT40, "Close To You" by Fun Factory made the 1995 year end countdown at #97, but never made the weekly Radio & Records top 40 chart.

I was listening to the CFTP episode again, and I found two other songs during the Shadoe era in the '90s that only spent a single week in the 40.
"I Want You"- Shana (1/10/90) "See The Lights"- Simple Minds (6/29/91).
I think I got the dates right!

Anybody know the highest charting song that only spent a week in the Top 40? I suppose I should ask for both the pre- and post-Soundscan records, especially since today with digital downloads you have songs that debut in the Top 40 and then fall completely off the chart the next week.

Casey answered that question once and at the time the record was Roll Over Beethoven by Chuck Berry.

To expand on the question what was the highest charting song that spent only one week in countdown during AT40 years (not counting songs that fell off from first ever broadcast that were falling down chart). I don't consider any songs that debuted on 6/9/73 or 6/29/74 countdowns because they used bogus chart data.
