A great promotional tool, but at what cost? As with books/movies and radio/tv, videos removed so much imagination from the listening experience.
Of course, a really good video enhanced the overall entertainment experience at the same time.
What Casey Era song above all others do you find impossible to listen to without immediately thinking of the video?
Some that come to mind for me are, in more or less chronological order:
WHIP IT VACATION GYPSY MICKEY BILLIE JEAN HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF TAKE ON ME MONEY FOR NOTHING
But above all others I cannot listen to SLEDGEHAMMER without thinking of the video. Cannot be done. And in a way that's a shame, I think. Because it's a really good song by a terrific artist.

The late, great Dick Clark had lukewarm, at best, feelings towards music videos for the same reason you alluded to. He fervently believed that a music video robbed a person from forming his or her own mental picture of what a hit song is about.

One that comes to mind for me is "You Can Call Me Al" by Paul Simon.

Only slightly related. I can't hear Bob Segar's "Old time Rock n Roll" without thinking about that scene in "Risky Business" with Tom Cruise lip syncing and dancing in his underwear. Song is ruined for me.

30+ years later, anytime I hear Pat Benatar's "Love Is A Battlefield" the lyrics go like this:
"Whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa We are strong! You leave this house now! No one can tell us we're wrong You can just forget about coming back!"
My wife just looks at me like I'm nuts.

I remember one artist's career that came to an end because of a music video-"Rock Me Tonite" by Billy Squier!

^^ That video was terrible and that pretty much ended Billy Squier's career. Everybody thought he was gay. That video was cheesy as hell and it looks really dated now. Flashdance meets Wham meets Solid Gold. Yikes.
I always think of the Take On Me video by A-Ha before the song. The song wouldn't have been a hit without the video.

Billy Squier video is Kenny G meets Dirty Dancing LOL. Another video from 85 that brings back memories is the Alice In Wonderland themed "Don't Come Around Here No More" by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

Here's an interesting article where Billy reflects on the "Rock Me Tonite" video... he's gotten over it: dangerousminds.net/comments/the_video_that_killed_the_rock_n_roll_star"Addicted To Love" By Robert Palmer is one of those videos I can't get out of my head. All of those gorgeous ladies in his "band" !

Raspberry Beret, I believe Prince coughs during the intro. The Safety Dance and of course Thriller.

Speaking of Pat Benatar, when I hear "Shadows Of The Night", I can't help but think of the video where that Nazi guy gets blown up lol! Additonal videos include Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel, Take On Me by A-ha, "When I Think Of You by Janet Jackson, and "Come On Eileen" By Dexy's Midnight Runners.

Raspberry Beret, I believe Prince coughs during the intro. The Safety Dance and of course Thriller. The video for "Raspberry Beret" used the 12" version of the song, which featured a different opening to the song than the LP version--I believe Prince's coughing during the song's opening part was part of the 12" recording. Funny thing about that video--it was initially meant to be an entirely animated video and a group called Colossal Pictures was hired to put it together. After Prince got a hold of the footage, he supposedly used a machine that "fused" the automated video with a video of him with the Revolution performing the song. Guess it worked--it was one of his more memorable videos...

A song we just heard that debuted on the 7/20/85 show--"You're Only Human" by Billy Joel. One of my favorite videos of all time, and one that complements the song so well... www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhxjNYvJbgM

I love that song but to this day have a hard time hearing it without doing the video's dialogue during the instrumental section. "What happened, practice run late? You know, this little hobby of yours has gone too far. Why can't you for once do something for me?" "Like what?" "OH! He wants me....." Great song AND video.
