Dialog in videos. Did they think it would have such an impact?

I remember one artist's career that came to an end because of a music video-"Rock Me Tonite" by Billy Squier! If MTV had existed in 1978-79, Olivia Newton-John's career might have been ended by this band, especially the keyboard player. I think there might have been some cocaine backstage in both cases. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTsdz5cNTeY

I'll pick one from the pre-MTV era, and it's a song being featured this weekend on the 8/2/80 show... "Coming Up" by Paul McCartney. I saw this video on Saturday Night Live when Fr. Guido Sarducci interviewed Paul McCartney... I fell in love with the song and that video during that show. If I hear the live version of the song, I don't think of the video but if I hear the studio version, I can't help but think of "Beatle Paul", "Buddy Holly", "Neil Young", or the guy playing bari sax who is always a step or two behind the other sax players.

"It's the End of the World As We Know It" by REM (I had a thing for that skateboarder), "Sledgehammer" by Gabriel, "Land of Confusion" by Genesis, and "True Faith" by New Order instantly come to mind regarding this subject.

The video for "Coming Up" particularly applies for the studio version of the song. A brilliant video, especially for the pre-MTV days...

Most people (at least roughly one half of the population) would have been way to focused on ONJ herself to notice the other dudes in the video. Funny thing about this song and video--she could have released it any time between late 1978 and about 1983 and it probably would have been a hit. This video almost looks like it came out in 1982 or so...

Here's the original late 70's promo video:
