Actually, I've just been given the scoop as to this year's July 4 specials. One, should be obvious - the 80s will get the second installment of The #1 Hits of The 80s. The other - may not be so obvious? But it has a connection to the 80s special, all the same. Let's see who can figure it out first. And no cheating! A repeat of the first of the AT40 #1 songs of the 70's specials created by Ken Martin?

Are you using Billboard for the 90s to now? Part Billboard, part Mediabase and since I'm an AC station, I'll be switching over to the the AC / Hot AC charts for parts of the countdown. Will it be just one song per year following 1976? It looks like several pre-1976 years (e.g., 1957 and 1958, and 1965 and 1966) have two songs paired to them. Plus, there is that 1971 medley of "It's Too Late"/"I Feel the Earth Move." Brian

Brian Still in the writing phase but just planning on 1 per year outside the Casey part.

Looking over the WTOJ site for the airing of Ken's special, 40 hits-40 years. Anyone know? Ken? I started to hear it advertised while listening to Sunday's show but then abruptly got cut off.

Thank You guys! Looking forward to this special and Ken's addition too. I know that this is an exclusive of Ken's. Why are other stations scared to go "off the format and play this show?" It's a special holiday. It's not like every song on the special is from 1937.

The programming logic is that if you ever "break format" and your casual listeners don't like what they hear, they may not come back. And if your P1 listeners don't like it either, they will likely come back but may go venture to see what else is out there. There are stations not even willing to play certain years of the 70s or 80s anymore because it deviates too much from the core playlist, which is why both AT40 series now have B options. Kudos to Ken for airing this show and marketing it in a cool way. But most programmers would likely be afraid to touch songs from the 30s 40s and even 50s that no one knows or remembers. Other than P1's who are specifically tuning in for the show, which would be folks in this group, someone tuning into a classic hits stations for their favorite classic hits that comes across music from their grandparents era will likely be put off. Again, Ken is marketing it as a special and his station is known for holiday weekend specials with Casey Kasem. But for many stations and markets, it just would not work.

It's a special holiday. It's not like every song on the special is from 1937. Other than maybe 4 or 5 songs you will have 3 hours of music almost no one has ever heard. And really, most everyone has NEVER heard. I listened to this show 4 years ago. It was extremely boring. I am not a radio station. I program my iPod for what an audience of 1 wants to hear: me. I have put up with a lot of shows I didn't care for for the sake of doing so because it was a countdown show. This is the week in my 40 years ago listening I would listen to this show, and I refuse. I would like to think being a fan of countdowns and all I am more tolerant than the average listener. And if I am not even listening for myself, I can't imagine stations across the nation being cool with airing it.

Agreed. I have sat through many a song over the year that I don't care for while I was listening to a radio show. This is one special I have zero interest in until you get to the mid 60s.

I think Sentimental Journey and Goodnight Irene are on it but beyond that, nothing for me until maybe the late 60s.

There should be a few classic pre-late 60s tunes in there: "Tossin' and Turnin'" ('61), "I Get Around" ('64), and, of course, "Satisfaction" ('65). Granted, there's also a few 'huh?' songs like "Alley Oop" ('60) and "The Stripper" ('62)! Can't remember how they chose the pre-Hot 100 years' songs (Hot 100 started in August 1958), even though I do remember hearing this show back when it first ran, but if they used the "Best Sellers" chart for pre-59 years then "Rock Around the Clock" ('55) and Elvis' "Teddy Bear" ('57) should be in there as well. Unfortunately, so will "The Purple People Eater" ('58)!
