Welcome to both first-time commentators, but long-time readers. I'm glad to have you both here.

Darn, I just missed it.
How did the beginning go? Did Casey make clever references to some of the artists that would be on the countdown, like he sometimes did on the specials?

I posted this in the 80s thread since this show was part of the 80s program this week (I think) but I'll repost it here since a lot of discussion about it is taking place here:
So I listened to the Top 40 of the 90s today. I must say I haven't been so disappointed in a show ever. You are telling me the #1 song of 1990 ranks BELOW the #3 song of 91? And the #5 song of 91 outranked them both?? Lets not even bring up the top 2 of 96 being nowhere to be found yet #3 and #7 of that year do??? Also, how does the #2 song of 98 outrank #1 of that year when both had their peak and and were off the chart before 98 was over?! What a friggin' mess!

So it looks like AT40 had the same theory for both the 70s and 90s decade end shows. They wanted to tweak the rankings enough to make it a surprise. Otherwise, it would be too predictable. The whole premise of the AT40 shows for the average listener with no access to Billboard is wondering what the next song will be. So they wanted that to be the case for these shows too. But the 90s show is much worse because they evidently felt tweaking the rankings to allow for songs from the early 90s to be mixed in with songs from the rest of the decade was too difficult to do.
It is too bad someone like Rob Durkee cannot explain how they tabulated these surveys and why. It is all speculation based on the data that is available to all of us.

I guess for me, it was more a case of enjoying hearing the songs or having the opportunity to hear the best songs of the 1990s, so I won't complain on that end. That said, I guess some of the rankings were headscratchers. I'd have thought that at least a few of the early 1990s songs would have placed higher, and some of the later 1990s songs not quite so high. But then again, you tell me how " Why Me" by Kris Kristofferson ranked as the second-biggest hit of 1973 despite only reaching No. 16 during its original 19-week chart run. Sometimes, logic does get thrown out the window. Come up with a perfect formula, and I'll be a taker, I guess. Brian

Some of the original and optional extras were better songs than some of them in the countdown. "Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins fits that statement. A great song, his best as a solo artist that was released as a single. That comes from a long-time fan of PC.

Was anyone able to get the whole show? I got the entire show, but it's in three separate parts. One is 10 minutes long, the other two are nearly identical in length.

Mainly because if I just want the music ill go buy it from ITunes or watch the video on YouTube. When I listen to a countdown show, I like it to make some level of sense. This show does not. There should be no such tweaking. The same methodology used to determine the top songs of the year should logically apply to the decade. This show defies logic in spectacular fashion. So spectacular that I think I should applaud whoever came up with this list because to f it up that bad takes real talent! As far as "Why Me", it doesn't bug me. In an age of songs going up and down the chart in short order, the # of weeks it had may have truly made it #2 for the year.

So, then, what would YOUR top 10 have been for the entire decade of the 1990s? If I've posed this question to you before (or others did), my apologies ... . Me? Probably "One Sweet Day" by Mariah Carey/Boyz II Men from 1995-1996, going by Billboard Hot 100 weeks at No. 1. Others in the running: • "Iris" – Goo-Goo Dolls. (Which actually spent longer at No. 1 on the airplay chart ... .) • "End of the Road" – Boyz II Men. • "I Will Always Love You" – Whitney Houston. • "I'll Make Love to You" – Boyz II Men. (Going by Billboard rank only; not sure of what the song did on Radio & Records.) Brian

(Going by Billboard rank only; not sure of what the song did on Radio & Records.) Brian I don't remember anyone asking me that but even if they had I have no answer. I neither created an algorhythm to figure it out nor do I have a running talley of every chart for the year, not to mention I'd count the Hot 100 for 1990-11/23/91. I cannot tell you what the top 10 would be. In truth, a personal algorhythm I created would probably rank the charts by year different than they did also. If you see, my complaints are based on the year end charts compared to this thing. The fact that most early 90s songs were near the bottom didn't surprise me or bother me. With the methodology change in 94 that was to be expected and as am an opponent of weighting, it wouldn't have surprised me if there were even less representation in a legit survey like that than this. You may also see I do not argue against #1 for the decade. Since a portion of its chart run took place in another year, it's place at #1 is very believable. So, honestly if I had to say if a legit decade show was done, this, Iris, or Torn would have been the top candidates I think to be #1.

Radio and Record chart performance? You can go to this site: wweb.uta.edu/faculty/gghunt/charts/chart.htmlThat's what the Top 40 show that you listened to was based on. If you want to see how the year end tabulations looked, go to this site: www.oldradioshows.com/ct40/ct40regindex.htmlI'm with Paul, the show is not inaccurate because 1990 and 1991 shows are so far down. They are inaccurate because some songs on the show ranked differently at the end of the year than they did at the end of the decade. For example (and I don't have the chart in front of me so if I'm wrong feel free to correct). How is "Romantic" by Karyn White, which was the number 5 song of 1991 end up on the countdown but "Rush Rush", the number 2 song, does not. It's those things that bug me.
