In 1976 a song called "Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine, peaked at #40 and in my old rock and roll book shows the song as a million seller, so apparently it was a crossover hit, maybe country??? I consider that the worst song ever to peak at #40. God, what a piece of crap!!!

Kim Carnes' "Invisible Hands", hands down. My most favorite #40-peaking song, IMO. Entered AT40 on November 26, 1983 and remained there for one week in December that year. Premiere can only air November 26, 1983 (though it hasn't aired yet) because the latter show with "Invisible Hands" had Charlie Van Dyke at the mic.
The Communards' "Don't Leave Me This Way" from March 1987 was pretty good too.
I also enjoy "Rhythm Of Love" by Yes. That was a great song, despite it's peak at #40 in February 1988 (Premiere aired that particular show earlier this year). The beginning sounds like it's The Beach Boys meets Progressive Rock. It was their last top 40 hit, if I recall.
Oddly enough, despite my bad taste for 1981 hits, "Burnin' For You" by Blue Oyster Cult is one of a small number of songs from that year I really enjoyed. I'm surprised it only peaked at #40! I would have expected to peak closer to #30, if anything.
However, I have not heard "Promise Me" by The Cover Girls in quite a long time. I seem to have forgotten the song after nearly a quarter of a century. I wonder if Premiere aired the May 21, 1988 episode yet?

The Cure's "Just Like Heaven," as mentioned by others, and Steve Perry's "Strung Out." It wasn't his biggest solo hit, but probably my favorite single released from the Street Talk CD.

There are a lot of great choices here. I am always impressed when I come to this board!
Mine is from this week's 1983 show; Hold Me 'Til The Morning Comes.

Gotta be "Charity Ball" by Fanny on November 6, 1971 -- one of those Casey didn't get to play during its original chart run. Unfortunately, that had to peak at #40 the very first week Casey had a guest host so we'll never hear it in full from Premiere (unless they get really creative with optional extras.) Casey did play part of it on 8/11/84, though, which we heard a few weeks ago. I'm not sure I ever got to hear the full song until I pulled up a YouTube clip of Fanny performing it on the Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.

...Steve Perry's "Strung Out." It wasn't his biggest solo hit, but probably my favorite single released from the Street Talk CD. Back in that time period, one of the Top 40 stations in my area (maybe WPRO in Providence, RI) had an all-request show one night a week. They used to run ads for it with clips of listeners calling in to request various songs. For quite some time one of the clips was of someone requesting "Strung Out". I always thought that was funny given that the song had only hit #40 on the chart -- that may have been the only time they ever played it!

I would concur with all of those songs...except for the Cover Girls hit. "Invisible Hands" and "Rhythm of Love" in particular are excellent cuts. One other that comes to mind is "Spice of Life" by Manhattan Transfer, which spent the weeks of 11/5/83 and 11/12/83 (two shows we've heard in the past two years) at #40. However, "Just Like Heaven" (mentioned as well) is one I would nominate for the best song ever that peaked at #40. I don't believe that Premiere has aired 5/21/88 yet.

Question regarding "Burnin' For You" - this song spent three weeks at #40 (Oct. 3rd, 10th, and 17th of 1981)...does anyone know if any other song spent three weeks or more at #40? Or is this song the record holder for most weeks peaking at #40?

I'm listening to the 9-14-85 countdown right now, and, Laura Branigan's "Spanish Eddie" is spending its second, and last week in the top 40, both weeks at No.40. I thought the song did better than that.
