My favorite song to peak at #43 is Nina Gordon's "Tonight And The Rest of My Life" in 2000. It did, however, make AT20.

Based on the amount of airplay "Beethoven" got in my area that summer, I would've thought it should have charted much higher. If memory serves, it was top 20 on local station KTKT's survey. Probably one of those regional hits, just like "Back When My Hair Was Short" (#40 for one week in June) was 'back East'!

Falco's "Der Kommissar" was a far better version than After the Fire's version. Falco's song got heavy airplay in Canada early in 1983 and most likely charted pretty high. That should have charted on AT40. Nik Kershaw's "Wouldn't It Be Good" from 1984 was another excellent song. Very successful in Canada, and likely charted pretty high there. Should have made the US top 40. Couldn't agree more with the Nik Kershaw cut--would be in my top 10 of best songs not to reach the top 40. As for "Der Kommissar" - I am a fan of both. Falco's original version of this song was great, but ATF's english remake was one of my favorite songs during the spring of 1983, and still one that I like hearing today. Both versions are terrific...

Just like another aforementioned herein this regional hit "The Super Bowl Shuffle" by The Chicago Bears Shufflin' Crew was around Chicago, Illinois, NW Indiana and its surrounding midwestern areas back in 1985-1986, it sold 1 million records, going RIAA Gold, but only got to #41 on Billboard's Hot 100.

I honestly think Feargal Sharkey's "A Good Heart" should have been a top 40 hit. The song got heavy airplay in Canada early in 1986 and went to the top 5 there. Falco's "Der Kommissar" was a far better version than After the Fire's version. Falco's song got heavy airplay in Canada early in 1983 and most likely charted pretty high. That should have charted on AT40. Trio's "Da Da Da" - again, got pretty decent airplay in Canada in Fall 1982 and likely did very well there, yet it should have made the US top 40. Nik Kershaw's "Wouldn't It Be Good" from 1984 was another excellent song. Very successful in Canada, and likely charted pretty high there. Should have made the US top 40. I completely agree with you. And speaking about Falco´s "Der Kommissar": When Falco produced the single "Der Kommissar" the record-label needed a B-side and they produced " Helden von heute" which can be translated as "Heroes of today". Falco asked the legendary bouncer of the U4-disco in Vienna, Conny de Beauclair, which of the two songs should be the "A"-side and which the "B"-side, because he couldn´t decide it. And Conny said: "Put ´Der Kommissar´ on the ´A´-side".

Speaking of Kim Wilde, another song of hers that should have made the top 40 is "Say You Really Want Me". That was very upbeat and good to listen to.
I also think another song that should have made the top 40 is "Oops Upside Your Head" by The Gap Band. I heard this song in Second Life in 2008 or 2009, and I fell in love with this funky dance song pretty quickly!
Another song that should have made the top 40 but never made the Hot 100 let alone the top 40 is "Close to the Edit" by Art of Noise. I first heard this song on a local dance music show from Detroit aired on WJBK in late-1988. I loved that song pretty quickly. The show was titled 2 Hot, if I recall. That show lasted only a few months.
I do remember hearing Yaz's "Nobody's Diary" in Second Life before. I hardly hear it nowadays, because the DJ who played it is on hiatus from DJ'ing due to computer problems. It's quite a popular song in the U.K.

On the second Casey era AT40 (1998-2004), these songs should have made the AT40 chart if they made the Top 40 on R&R: "She Wants You" by Billie "The Ketchup Song" by Las Ketchup "Purest of Pain" by Son By Four "Move Your Feet" by Junior Senior

Speaking of Art Of Noise, I heard "Beatbox" everywhere November 1983 through the early months of 1984, along with Let The Music Play and Holiday. I guess I was the only one hearing it. XD I don't think it even made the Hot 100.
Wikipedia says Beatbox hit #101.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" by the alternative rock band R.E.M.. That is another song we couldn't see on AT40. "It's the End of the World" was a failure on the Hot 100, only reaching #69 on that chart. Does anyone here not feel fine about its failure to reach the Hot 100's Top 40?
Actually, songs of the post-punk genre do not have a good track record on the Hot 100, with only a select few of them actually reaching the Top 40.

Not sure if it's been mentioned already but I love the song "A Certain Girl" by Warren Zevon.Only made it to #57 in 1980 but I heard it a lot on the radio especially the AOR station. Great song!

I've always found it interesting how a UK act with great success in the UK could have such limited success in the US, especially those who have a hit or two and then are never heard from again. Kim Wilde comes to mind. Was Chequered Love even released in the US? Kids in America was released in the US well after its UK release, so Kim was probably already working on her next album and promoting Kids and any potential follow-ups here in the States probably wasn't considered. Kids still did fairly well despite lack of live promotion here. Years later, Kim has a big hit with You Keep Me Hangin On - a song she promoted through promotional club gigs in tbe States - but then has a weak follow-up in Say You Really Want Me. By the time You Came was released in fall of '88, we had already forgotten Kim again. I wish we had heard more of her music in the 80s. I really dig her new wave stuff, though I also like singles from Another Step and Close, too. I think she had bad timing for US releases, though I've gathered from some interviews that Kim was content with her success and didn't need to conquer America.
