Ryan just turned 30. I know because he's a year younger than me (I'm 31).
Clearly, this board is made up of members who generally like Casey Kasem better than Ryan Seacrest. And there's nothing at all wrong with that (especially since I share that sentiment...<g>).
However, Ryan does have plenty of merits as host of a top 40 countdown show. And in this day and age of bland, personality-less radio, Ryan DOES have the POTENTIAL to become a legend. Let's resume that discussion 20 years from now when we see where Ryan is or isn't at at that stage. Right now, the fact of the matter is that the discussion is extremely premature. Ryan's been doing radio for about 15 years at this point, but has only become a national talent in the past 5. That's WAY too early to decide whether he will someday be considered a legend.

Picture yourself in a special scenario.....you grew up a few generations before we did and grew up listening to radio horror shows and comedy shows....and music shows like Your Hit Parade.
Now, fastforward to a time later in your life when the "entertainment" shows are on this new thing called a television and some weird new guy on the radio is counting down the songs talking about some music artist's gold hubcaps. Who wants to hear about stuff like that? What happened to my Hit Parade? And why are the likes of my old radio shows now being broadcast on this thing called a television?
Meanwhile...the younger generation finds the change very welcome.
That's kind of how Ryan is with AT40. While me being 19, the youngest member on this board (I think), and in the extreme minority of missing Casey Kasem on CHR/Pop radio in my age group.....i'm sure more than a handful of kids who turned on their radios on weekends to the local CHR/Pop station would put on a CD or turn off the radio when they heard it was the Casey Kasem show. But i'm sure many of them now enjoy and embrace the countdown with Ryan.
Bummer for us....but change must go on. Once I finally "got over" Casey leaving AT40, I simply thank my lucky stars we still have him on AT20 and AT10 for the time being. And now that i'm older (meaning not 15 anymore) and my music tastes are broader....I prefer the music Casey plays on these 2 shows much more than the music currently heard on CHR/Pop radio. And i'm sure there are few people here that disagree. Since I am one that will listen to a Casey show no matter what the music, i'd much rather hear him play the likes of AC and Hot AC radio, than the latest 50 Cent, Nelly, and Snoop Dogg records over and over.

Talk about one of those "I couldn't have said it better myself" posts! Bravo! Since I am one that will listen to a Casey show no matter what the music, i'd much rather hear him play the likes of AC and Hot AC radio, than the latest 50 Cent, Nelly, and Snoop Dogg records over and over. It's funny. I've actually given up listening to the CHR version of AT40 in the past few months, instead making my weekly listening habits the HAC version of AT40 as well as Casey's two shows. I often ask myself if I would listen to AT40 today if it were still hosted by Casey Kasem. The answer... Probably. But, as was pointed out, I'd actually probably be in the minority (other than visitors to this site).

I would, too- even though I don't care much for the current music scene (jeez, I am getting old!). To me and I guess some of the other older people here, it's just being comfortable with what we grew up listening to. The music may change, but the voice and the stories and the LDD's...yeah, I'd still listen, as I do to AT10. The chart action is boring as paint drying, but it's still Casey.

Almost as boring as "The English Patient".

Brett made an interesting point. I was disappointed when Casey stepped down as host of American Top 40 last year, as Ryan replaced him. After he stepped down from AT40, I started listening to him on AT20 AC (now American Top 10), despite the fact that I am not much of a fan of AC music, although I do listen to the AC stations here in Detroit from time to time. Although I don't have much interest in AC music, I started listening to AT10 because of my longtime love for Casey, the hits from years past, the extras, and the LDD's. I really enjoy listening to AT10. As for AT40, despite the fact that I turn 33 next week, I still enjoy listening to CHR/Pop Radio and AT40 with Ryan. I enjoy listening to both shows and I listen to all different types of music.

I think its safe to assume we were ALL pretty much listening to AT40 because of Casey Kasem. We're all a little on the older side or prefer older music primarily, so when he left so did we. However, unlike the way others may present that, it isn't a knock AGAINST Ryan, it is a praise for Casey Kasem.

Just thought I would give a bit of an update here. This weekend (Sept. 24/25) will mark the 84th consecutive weeks of Casey countin' 'em down! I've all but forgotten the show has ever been guest hosted, except when I listen to an old show by someone else. While some of them were very well done, I would love to see this streak continue as long as Casey can do it!!

It looks like another Casey streak is running. I believe the last weekend Casey took off was the January 27-28, 2007 weekend. John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting guest hosted AT10/AT20 that weekend. Going into the October 13-14, 2007 weekend, Casey went 37 weeks without a guest host.
