Why just 30 songs on the 90s on 9's "Back in the Day Replay" compared to the 40 on the (aptly-titled) VJ Big 40 Countdown on the SXM-80s channel?

I'm guessing two reasons. At first there might not have been as much interest in a '90s countdown, and the songs are longer, compared to the three previous decades.

This week is 1999. Though I doubt Prince's tune will be played, since it was released in 1982...

A good selection, as this particular chart hasn't been played in eight years. Seems like a rarity these days, with the frequent repeats from the past two years. Why just 30 songs on the 90s on 9's "Back in the Day Replay" compared to the 40 on the (aptly-titled) VJ Big 40 Countdown on the SXM-80s channel? It's probably due to the programmers wanting to avoid playing the lesser-known songs that would show up in the 31-40 range each week. The insistence of radio bigwigs that people only want to hear the biggest hits over and over is why music countdowns get smaller and smaller. It's why present-day countdowns only do a Top 40 of the year instead of a Top 100, and why several of the SiriusXM countdowns have been retooled to feature fewer songs. I don't like it either, but it's nothing new.

This week is 1997. Chart date of February 8, 1997. Third time we've heard this chart in the past eight years. Even when they manage to avoid repeats from the past two years, they seem to make bad picks.

I noticed that R. Kelly's song at #3 (I Believe I Can Fly) was skipped in the 02/08/97 countdown - just like they skipped him in the 1996 countdown a few weeks ago. I wonder how long they have been enforcing the blockade on him? Is he also skipped on the Pop2K countdowns?

I'm not sure if Pop2K does the same.

They briefly cut Kanye West from the Pop 2K countdown last year, but then restored him. R. Kelly is still banned from the 90s and 2000s countdowns.
