I don't see a thread in here for this, so creating one.
For my part, I try to listen to this countdown, it is pretty good.
(I will admit I am much more of a fan of the early 90s- not much after 1995.)

Don't have Sirius XM but when I did, I caught this countdown a few times. I like the early and late 90s myself. Of course this is based on the Hot 100 so after 1991, there is no other countdown doing that.

I listen to this show regularly, but I'm harshly critical of it for several reasons:
-- as has been noted, using the Hot 100 for a 90s countdown show is problematic, as the later decade charts began to reflect what was on pop radio less and less. By 1997, the charts were overrun with Urban songs that were not pop hits, while many pop hits are absent due to never being released as singles. I believe SiriusXM is obligated to use Billboard charts, but it just doesn't work very well here.
-- the content of the shows is incredibly generic and repetitive. We may bash the 80s VJs quite often, but at least they tell interesting stories and give chart data. Julie Brown simply repeats the same statistics every time a given year is featured. She will list the year's top movies, top TV shows, who won the Super Bowl, etc. It's boring and takes little effort.
-- the repeat factor is far worse than the VJ Big 40. This countdown doesn't follow any sort of 10-week rotation, it's much more random. For almost 18 months, the featured year on this countdown was "whatever we played two years ago this week." And for six of the last eight weeks, the chosen year was "whatever we played a year ago". It's ridiculous. Many charts have been featured 4+ times, but meanwhile they've never once featured any chart from July 1996.

This weekend we're supposed to get 1996. Notably, they did 1995 in both November and December. We also got December 1993 and January 1994, thus repeating many songs.
When I listen to this show, in addition to the songs included here I also pull up the Radio & Records (i.e. Casey) chart and also listen to the songs from it that weren't on the Hot 100's top 30, which gives me more of the flavour of pop radio of the time. I like Julie's presentation and she has some interesting stories about the songs and artists, though it gets repetitive hearing what the year's top TV shows were or who Time's Person of the Year was. How about some new throwback trivia?

Well, in the 1990's when the Billboard Hot 100 chart source was abandoned from Shadoe AT40 after November 23, 1991. * Shadoe Stevens AT40 used first the Billboard Radio Monitor chart source and then for the final 2 original AT40 years the Billboard Top 40 Mainstream charts. * Casey's Top 40 and Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 used the R&R CHR/Pop chart source. Although from 1995-1996 Rick Dees abandoned the R&R CHR/Pop chart source for his own rhthym leaning chart source. * Even the 1990-1991 Dave Sholin's Insider Top 40/Top 30 show used the Gavin Report CHR charts.

Gee I never knew any of this. This is brand new information. But really, what does this have to do with the show? They've never used anything besides the Hot 100. I know they can't use any other non-Billboard source, which does make most of the shows kind of boring to listen to, and don't get me started with the constant repeats. As for the commentary, yeah I wish they would change things up. The Pop2Kountdown does the same thing as well. You would think that not much happened in those decades the way they repeat the same stuff over and over every time they play a certain year.

Looks like 1996 this week (1/20/24) Which sadly will have mostly the same songs from the 1995 countdown that was done on December 23rd. (Starting to see what you mean...)

Notably, they did 1995 in both November and December. They played 1995 five times in the second half of 2023. Three of those five charts were featured for the 4th time. See my above post complaining about the repeat factor. At least this week's chart is not one that's been heard in the past two years. And, since they played 1/27/96 last year, we at least won't get a year-old repeat next week either.

This week's is from January 26, 1991, thus matching AT40 as hosted by Shadoe. 1: THE FIRST TIME - SURFACE Thanks MKarns. One countdown I will listen to...lol (I am picky, I only listen to about 1994 or so - back, 1995 - on, pop music seemed to get rap/hip-hop dominated - love 1990 - 1992.)

A couple of notes from this week's show:
-- They played a few songs in the top ten out of order. After The Rain was played as #6 while the correct #6 and #7 songs were played a notch lower.
-- They played the original album version of Play That Funky Music. I didn't learn until decades after the fact that the song was re-recorded after the success of Ice Ice Baby, and the version that was played on AT40 and other shows in 1991 was the new version.
