I also remember Howard Cosell's ill-fated variety show "Saturday Night Live"-ABC was trying to duplicate the success of the legendary "Ed Sullivan Show" which ran from 1948-1971-Unfortunately,lightning didn't strike twice & the program was gone by early 1976. It's amazing how huge a celebrity Mr. Cosell was in the '70s, and how forgotten he is today. Kind of similar to Mr. Sullivan. Any impressionist worth his salt did impressions of both. Enjoy the Sunday night half-hour 'Sullivan Show' highlights shows on MeTV. Wish they were hour-length. Always at least one top 40 artist ("...and now, for you young folks..." ) on them. Al Michaels said that Howard, by about 1980, was one of the five most famous persons in the United States. I guess that would include Reagan, Carter, Kennedy, Winkler, unless I'm forgetting someone more obvious. Maybe Carroll O' Connor, Gerald Ford.

Ah yes "The Last Farewell" DEFINITELY fits that description! "The Last Farewell" was more recognizable for Chicago TV viewers in the late 1970's and early 1980's with the opening of the song being used for station I.D.'s on WGN Channel 9 Chicago - even via cablesystems at the time. Just watching him singing it on the 1988 MDA Telethon. Someone commented "that's the WGN theme song". Not quite as bad as "more cowbell" (what could be?), but still...the legacy of the song is tainted. It makes one understand why the Beatles have held out so long. But give it time. Within a generation Hey Jude will make most people think of potato chips or smart phones or whatever.

I always thought the some of the AC-leaning ballads that charted in the early 1990s seemed out place. Songs like "I Don't Have The Heart" and "From A Distance" performed very well at CHR in an era when the trend was toward artists like MC Hammer and C&C Music Factory. By the end of the decade, most songs of that style wouldn't be heard outside of AC stations.

Another song that may have sounded out of place on AT40 to some people was "Hocus Pocus" by Focus. While I enjoy the tune, I am sure the song turned heads when the yodeling started. I imagine a few people who listened to AT40 back in the day and heard this song for the first time thought to themselves... Boston's "Amanda" always felt out of place to me whenever I listen to a show from the fall of 1986, like it was released five years too late. It was. "Amanda" was recorded in 1980.

I know the current charts use streaming but Rich Man north of Richmond by Oliver Anthony music seems very out of place for the current hot 100 especially at the number one position. I'd expect it at a lower number for a short time, but number one for two weeks who would've thought especially by an unsigned act.

Nothing but anger - at politicians - and employers - and welfare recipients. Did he leave anyone out? A smorgasbord of grievance. It should be out of place everywhere.

Too sappy for any living human being, you mean... Good god this. A million times this. “Butterfly Kisses” is so sappy Whitney Houston probably wouldn’t have touched it with a 10 foot pole. It’s sweet he wrote a song about his daughter but please, talk about corny. He was just showing his love for his daughter!

Anyone remember in 1989 "Orinoco Flow" by Irish new age singer Enya? It would be out of place for an AT40 show even when Shadoe Stevens was hosting!

After going for years without a full-blown novelty song, it sounded weird to hear "#Selfie" by The Chainsmokers in 2014.

"Sadeness Part 1" by Enigma is another of those mid-1990/1991 songs that sounded out of place, especially featuring the Gregorian chorus.

Turning to the AT10 (AC) Top 60 Christmas Countdown from 2005: Casey mentions that a song in the Christmas countdown "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg which ranks #26 in the Christmas countdown has nothing to do with Christmas. (Though it was on the AT40 chart January 1981 to March 1981!) But it may or may not be out of place for Christmas holidays.
