I just heard "Run Joey Run".....I wonder if this qualifies?
It sounds like it belongs in the 60s with "Leader of the Pack", among others.

"Run Joey Run" is absolutely horrible-However,I liked David Geddes' follow up "Last Game Of The Season".

Opposite for me--love "Run Joey Run"s toungue-in-cheek over-the-top cheesiness, but loathe "Last Game...". Maudlin schlock without redeeming irony, right up there with "Rocky" from the same time period.

Desiderata by Les Crane--a recitation of a poem from 1927 that became a hit in 1971.
Of course, one thing about some of the early days of AT40 was the fact that you might not like this song on the countdown but surely one of your favorites is coming up soon.

“Butterfly Kisses” by Bob Carlisle in 1997 seemed too sappy for Top 40 (Casey’s Top 40 then) when the chart seemed to be dominated by rock/alternative bands and R&B acts at the time.

Too sappy for any living human being, you mean... Good god this. A million times this. “Butterfly Kisses” is so sappy Whitney Houston probably wouldn’t have touched it with a 10 foot pole. It’s sweet he wrote a song about his daughter but please, talk about corny.

Just heard it on the September 3, 1983 Flashback Countdown on The Fox and "Puttin' On The Ritz" written in 1929 seems a likely candidate.

How about both versions of 1974's "Americans" by both Gordon Sinclair and Byron MacGregor?
