Joe that Carpenters song in the new countdown is so beautiful it is painful to listen to. What a masterpiece.
Some really great songs in this show. The year was turning the corner after a weird beginning.

The year was turning the corner after a weird beginning. I agree, Chris; in addition, one of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs is on the countdown, as well. While there are no unique songs on the countdown (nothing that one didn't hear on AT40)--this edition of the Rewind Countdown makes mention of a few songs that reached #1 in Record World that did not top the Billboard chart. Hope you enjoy the show from the June 15, 1974 issue. archive.org/details/rwc-1974061501/RWC1974061501.mp3

Last week, one of the options was the AT40 show featuring the Billboard Top 40 from July 18, 1970 issue--now here is the Top 40 from the following week (July 25, 1970) from Record World magazine. It features 6 songs that did not reach the Top 40 in Billboard (so not heard on AT40)--and, of course, features a #1 hit that didn't reach the top in either BB or CB. archive.org/details/rwc-1970072501/RWC1970072501.mp3

Wow what a difference--Sunshine by the Archies peaked at #17 on RW, but only 57 on BB!

Even though the song that was at #1 on the show didn't reach the top spot in either Billboard or Cash Box, it was in the Top 10 on both magazines year end chart for 1970 (and surprisingly was #12 on the Record World year end survey).

Going back 50 years ago this week, August 7, 1971; and the Top 40 pop singles as listed in Record World magazine. Three songs were in the Top 40 that never made the Top 40 in Billboard and were never played on AT40, including the only solo Top 40 hit for an ex-member of the Monkees. By the way, I dug up all the 45 versions of the songs in the countdown. Joe archive.org/details/rwc-1971080701/RWC1971080701.mp3

There was also a 3:25 version released which I bought by mistake when it came out. That version cut the whole intro, and started with just the organ riff before the vocals. Not good. The Five Man Electrical Band were the first group I ever saw in concert. They opened for Rare Earth in the spring of 1972. Enjoyed both bands, but especially the Five Man Electrical Band. That $4.50 ticket price really hurt the ol' wallet! Both groups' chart success had already occurred, with the exception of Rare Earth's "Warm Ride" barely reaching the Top 40 in the late 70s. They were pushing their new singles at the time. Rare Earth's cover of Ray Charles's "What'd I Say" was a mid-charter, and the Five Man Electrical Band's "Julianna" missed the Hot 100. It did peak at #61 on Cashbox and made it to #17 on the Canadian charts. It's a great song, and I did manage to find a copy of the 45. Thanks for the memories, Joe.

Thanks for doing another Rewind countdown from the early 70s, Joe. I really enjoyed the show from 07/25/70 and am looking forward to playing this one from 1971 soon. It just seems to me that AT40 doesn't play enough of these memories from the early 70s since their show covers all 10 years of the 70s except the first 6 months.
Do you have any more unreleased Cash Box countdowns from the 70s that you might surprise us with sometime?

But there usually needs to be a hook, like a #1 song that failed to make #1 in Billboard. Oh look there is one of those in just a couple of weeks!

Enjoyed your latest & greatest Joe, though there are a few cringe-worthy songs among the Top 40.
Did like the back-to-back debuts of Austin Roberts and Helen Reddy, since they had previously hit the Top 40 in Record World with the same song one year apart.
Thanks for the countdown.

Here's a link to the show being discussed above--the Top 40 from Record World, August 23, 1975 issue. One song in the Top 40 that Casey never got to play and , of course, a song that reached #1 that didn't make it to the top spot in Billboard. In addition is a 'listen to this' sample of an earlier version of a song in the countdown. archive.org/details/rwc-1975082301/RWC1975082301.mp3Enjoy this show from the summer of '75. Joe
