Most of us chart geeks, probably have the Billboard chart positions of our favorite songs burned into our brains--but some times our favorites reached #1 on a chart other than Billboard and sadly that means that Casey didn't get to declare that song a #1 hit (during the 1970's or '80's). So I came up with the idea of featuring a few countdowns from the 1970's & '80's that feature songs that reached #1 on a national chart , other than Billboard, on this new concept--the Rewind Countdown. The first one I am featuring is from the year that I graduated high school (1978)--courtesy of Record World magazine for the week ending January 14, 1978. archive.org/details/rwc-1978011401 I hope you enjoy the show-- Joe P.S. thanks to Mike and his great list of the #1's from all the major trades.

Will check this out. 1978 is one of my favorite years musically. Thanks, Joe! 🙂

Just loved and I mean LOVED the countdown. It was just hard to believe that on RWM that "You Light Up My Life" had spent 13 weeks at #1. I am most likely to believe that is a record until at least the digital download age. #1 was definitely a surprise!
Thanks Joe so much for that edition.

Nice outro music Joe! Was about to do my best dance moves (still not good), but stopped short of pulling something.

When the intro music started at the beginning of Segment #1 I thought I was hearing Last Christmas for the hundredth time in the last couple of months. BTW Leo Sayer does a great Boz impression on #40. It doesn't hurt that he had the Toto guys with him.

It's time for another countdown coming off the Record World charts--this one from the February 5, 1972 issue. It features two songs in the Top 40 that didn't make the Top 40 in Billboard--and a song at #1 that didn't make it to the top spot in either Billboard or Cash Box. archive.org/details/rwc-1972020501Joe

Thanks, Joe! It is cold by Atlanta's standards today, as well. Cold rain and a little bit of snow in the North Georgia Mountains (about 60 miles due north).

I had forgotten about it being in the BB Top Ten at the time. The only song I could think of was The Way Of Love by Cher but I guess it was a little early for that!

In my mind, Cash Box was the main competitor to Billboard over the years--but Record World during the last 5 years or so of its existence attracted more advertising than CB. The charts in RW seemed to move more slowly than either BB or CB and this countdown from 41 years earlier certainly seems to indicate that. Here are the Top 40 pop singles from RW from the issue dated March 8, 1980. archive.org/details/rwc-1980030801/RWC1980030801.mp3

This time I thought I had figured it out with about a minute left in Song #2. #1 was going to be The Long Run! Make that The Wrong Run. Wrong again.

The latest edition of the Rewind Countdown features the Top 40 pop singles from the March 11, 1972 issue of Record World magazine. Three of the songs featured during Hour #1 never reached the Top 40 on the Billboard charts (so AT40 never got to play them). Of course, the song at #1 never reached the top spot in Billboard. Enjoy the show-- Joe archive.org/details/rwc-1972031101/RWC1972031101.mp3

Joe, you stated "Handbags and Gladrags" was Rod Stewart's second Top 40 hit. Didn't "I Know I'm Losing You" make the Top 40 on RMW? I know it wasn't as big as "Maggie May," but I know it hit the Top 40 on BB (24 peak) and CB (22 peak).
I know better to challenge you so I am probably wrong!
