I'm not interested so much in acquiring any actual shows. My love of the charts, and my ritual of keeping track, began with the Weekly Top 30. So, I'd really appreciate it if anyone out there has a list of the songs from the very first show, on June 30, 1979. Pete Battistini says that Kiss' "I Was Made for Lovin' You" was #30, and Rickie Lee Jones' "Chuck E.'s in Love" was #1. I'd like to be able to fill in the missing 28. Thanks...

Do you know what chart the Weekly Top 30 used? The only chart I know of where "Chuck E.'s in Love" hit #1 was Radio and Records, but "I Was Made for Loving You" only hit #30 on its way down the chart in August (it entered the chart at #28 during the last of two weeks that "Chuck E.'s in Love" was at #1).

I've read elsewhere on this board that their chart was supposed to be an amalgam of Billboard, Cash Box, Record World, and Variety. Hard to believe that they stuck to that policy, given the crazy movement patterns of songs (from what I remember). If it had been any one chart exclusively, I would have tried to look it up, especially Cash Box. If only it were that simple...

I have a copy of one show and all they say is that the chart is determined by 'the countdown computer'. In an article from Billboard 1979 the show's chart is reportedly information gleamed from the major trades (but which ones is not indicated). The show (Weekly Top 30) was en expertly produced show but I don't know that the quality of the chart can be trusted. One example, on the show I have from 6-20-81; the song Sukiyaki by A Taste Of Honey was number one the previous week and fell all the way to #13; at the same time it peaked at #3 on Billboard and #4 on Cash Box.

That's OK. If there's one thing I'll always remember about this show, it would be that the "chart" was so much fun to keep track of...and that, quite frankly, was about it. It wasn't accurate or authoritative in any way, and wasn't trying to be. The production company, Drake-Chenault, never had an agreement with any of the trade publications to use their data.
My theory has always been that the "chart" was thrown together just for the sake of having the drama and excitement of a countdown. The more unpredictable the movement patterns of the songs were, the more exciting the show would be. And, more importantly, the less they stayed true to any actual trade pub's numbers, the easier it would be to get around any copyright infringement issues.
All I'm looking for is a way to compare their numbers on 6/30/79 to the real charts' numbers for the same week.
By the way, it was Rob Durkee who wrote about the Weekly Top 30 and some of Casey's other competitors. He devoted a couple of pages of The Countdown of the Century to that interesting topic. I had Pete on the brain for other reasons...

Hey doofus67, If you would like you can PM me and I will send you a copy of the chart from the week that I have (6/20/81) and then you can compare the chart to Billboard & Cash Box for that week.

Thank you, ipodtuner, for posting that Weekly Top 30 list! Sorry it took me this long to notice it. I'm curious: How did you find it? Here, then, is a side-by-side comparison of all the available chart rankings for the week ending 6/30/79. With Radio & Records, I'm using the June 22 chart because, in my research over the years, I've figured out that there was an eight-day gap between their chart date and the others. SONG | WT30 | AT40 | CASH BOX | RECORD WORLD | RADIO & RECORDS | "Chuck E.'s in Love" | 1 | 5 | 4 | 7 | 1 | "Ring My Bell" | 2 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 6 | "She Believes in Me" | 3 | 7 | 8 | 8 | 3 | "The Logical Song" | 4 | 6 | 9 | 6 | 2 | "We Are Family" | 5 | 4 | 2 | 5 | 4 | "Hot Stuff" | 6 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 7 | "You Take My Breath Away" | 7 | 10 | 7 | 4 | 18 | "Shine a Little Love" | 8 | 15 | 10 | 12 | 5 | "Boogie Wonderland" | 9 | 8 | 6 | 11 | 9 | "I Want You to Want Me" | 10 | 12 | 12 | 9 | 11 | "Just When I Needed You Most" | 11 | 9 | 11 | 13 | 19 | "Bad Girls" | 12 | 3 | 5 | 3 | 15 | "Minute by Minute" | 13 | 14 | 17 | 14 | 8 | "Gold" | 14 | 16 | 15 | 19 | 10 | "Dance the Night Away" | 15 | 18 | 22 | 20 | 13 | "When You're in Love with..." | 16 | 19 | 16 | 18 | 12 | "Reunited" | 17 | 17 | 19 | 10 | off | "Love You Inside Out" | 18 | 11 | 30 | 23 | off | "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy" | 19 | 27 | 13 | 24 | 20 | "Makin' It" | 20 | 13 | 14 | 16 | 26 | "Shakedown Cruise" | 21 | 31 | 27 | 28 | 16 | "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" | 22 | 20 | 18 | 15 | off | "I Can't Stand It No More"
| 23 | 21 | 23 | 32 | 22 | "Does Your Mother Know" | 24 | 25 | 20 | 33 | 24 | "Get Used to It" | 25 | 33 | 33 | 29 | off | "Heart of the Night" | 26 | 23 | 24 | 21 | 17 | "Days Gone Down" | 27 | 22 | 29 | 25 | 14 | "Shake Your Body..." | 28 | 34 | 31 | 17 | off | "You Can't Change That" | 29 | 24 | 21 | 26 | 27 | "I Was Made for Lovin' You" | 30 | 26 | 25 | 27 | 28 |

I truly loved this show especially when it ran 1am-4am on Saturday. Of course, KEEZ-99 would replay it 1-4 p.m. Sunday. I tracked their charts until the station dropped it spring of 1981. I started tracking the hits July 27, 1980. It's crazy that I ran into your chart comparison because I just did the same thing for October 4, 11 and 18 1980 on my company website.

Can you image a teenager sleeping on the couch Friday nights and secretly writing down the song rankings at 2 in the morning...I'm sure his parents would want him sleeping and not listening to the radio so it had to be played at low volume. Most of the time, I couldn't last until 4 in the morning.
