Another close one is Australian Sia, who was 38 when she hit the Top 40 for the first time with "Chandelier". A song she wrote with Rihanna or Beyoncé in mind. She later hit #1 for the first time at the age of 40 with "Cheap Thrills".
Fun fact: Sia is the niece of Men At Work lead singer, Colin Hay.

I was unfortunately reminded recently of the existence of "Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine. While he'd already been an established country star prior to that, he was 59 when that, his only top 40 crossover hit, made the top 40.

Ozzy Osbourne: "Close My Eyes Forever" (age 40) Al Jarreau: "We're In This Love Together" (age 41) David Guetta: "When Love Takes Over" (age 41) James Last: "The Seduction" (age 51) Michael Franti: "Say Hey (I Love You)" (age 43) Shawn Colvin: "Sunny Came Home" (age 41) Bob Carlisle: "Butterfly Kisses" (age 40) James Newton Howard: "The Hanging Tree" (age 63) Tiesto: "Red Lights" (age 45) Los Del Rio were in their late 40's when "Macarena" hit the top 40. David Guetta is currently on his 19th AT40 hit ("Goodbye," which is at #28 this weekend). So I bet it's safe to say he's the record holder for most Top 40 hits when first charting after turning 40.

Hearing her on 80's AT40 this week reminded me that Dottie West was 48 when she first hit the top 40 with "What Are We Doin' In Love".

And on this week's 1975 show, there is another! Herbie Mann didn't hit the top 40 until he was 45 with "Hijack".
Similarly with jazz musicians, Maynard Ferguson was 48 when he hit the top 40 with "Gonna Fly Now".

David Sanborn was 47 when he first made Casey's Top 40 in 1992 with "Bang Bang". When Londonbeat hit #1 with "I've Been Thinking About You", Jimmy Helms was 49. I am not sure how I missed this when you first posted, but my mind is absolutely blown that Jimmy Helms was not only that old then, he turns 80 this year!

(Thurl was the voice of Tony the Tiger in Kellogg's Frosted Flakes TV commercials from the 1950's until his 2005 death).

Here are a couple, both in featured roles: Loleatta Holloway, who was 44/45 when "Good Vibrations" went to number one in 1991 (Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch) Loleatta is currently on AT40 uncredited in “Essence” by Wizkid f/Tems. If she was still alive, she’d be 75, even older than Elton John. Unfortunately she died in 2011.
