Almost, but not quite...and I add it just because it blew my mind when I did the math and figured it out some years back. Toni Basil was 39 when "Micky" topped the charts in 1982. Also in the ballpark that year...Bertie Higgins, 37 when "Key Largo" hit. Another one that was close, and this really surprised me, was Meredith Brooks who was 39 when "B*tch" went to the top of CT 40.

She and Vangelis were both born in 1943 and he was 39 years and 1 month old when "Chariots of Fire" hit the top. In its 22nd week on the Hot 100, a more normal run to #1 would have gotten him there before his 39th birthday.

Delbert McClinton, 40 when "Giving It Up For Your Love" was a hit in 1981. (The early 80's were a great time for older singers hitting the top 40.)

To further prove the early 80's being a great time for older top 40 newcomers: Don Williams was 41 when he hit with "I Believe In You".

Does Pharrell Williams count? He was in his 30s when he first hit with "Frontin'" in 2003.

"Shaving Cream" needs an asterisk; all the artists involved were certainly well past 40 when the song hit the Top 40 but it had been recorded nearly 30 years earlier. So while they were past 40 in 1975 you were probably *hearing* people in their 20s or early 30s.

This doesn't really count, but the Greek singer Nana Mouskouri had, in the United Kingdom in early 1986, a Hit with "Only Love". Although she had over about 25 Years appeared in music Charts in other Countries, this was her only Hit there at age 51.

While he was already well known as a producer, Quincy Jones was 45 when he first hit the top 40 as a recording artist with "Stuff Like That" in 1978.

Interesting stuff posted here. I think the most interesting thing I learned is that Meredith Brooks is 59 years old.

Also, Julio Iglesias was 40 when he and Willie hit with "To All The Girls I've Loved Before". Interestingly enough, Willie Nelson himself qualifies as well! He was 42 when "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" hit the top 40.

David Sanborn was 47 when he first made Casey's Top 40 in 1992 with "Bang Bang".
When Londonbeat hit #1 with "I've Been Thinking About You", Jimmy Helms was 49.
