Thanks for 1978. I know at one time you stated you would do the Beatle years from 1964 until mid-1970, so this is so welcome. Will you be tackling other years of the 70's? There are two countdowns left to post covering the time frame from Jan 1964-June 1970--both from 1969. I then plan to post a few more countdowns from Cash Box Magazine that feature songs that I liked that became #1's in CB only (from 1970's/80's). Thanks to all of you that listen. Joe
Your latest is a good one, though a notable portion of hour 3 is cringe-worthy. Rock on, Joe!

I know that many of us chart watchers from time to time wonder which one of the charts were the most accurate--and this week's post is a good case in point. Here is a countdown featuring the Top 40 from Cash Box Magazine for the week ending March 23, 1974. The song at #1 never reached the top spot in Billboard, Record World or Radio & Records. As a matter of a fact the song was #12 in Billboard that same week, and #7 in both Record World and R&R, which makes me really question the accuracy of the Cash Box chart that week. However, the only good thing about the multiple charts is that songs you might like that didn't do well in Billboard (AT40), might have performed better on a rival chart--which is why I am featuring this chart. Enjoy-- Joe archive.org/details/1974032301

Your latest is a good one, though a notable portion of hour 3 is cringe-worthy. Rock on, Joe! If you're referring to March 1974, I'm right there with you. Joe does a great job as always, and I love being able to listen to these shows (over and over again), but early 1974 was the pits for Top 40 IMO. It has occurred to me that I might have a tendency to project my own happiness at certain times of my life onto the hit songs of those times, and I was miserable in early 1974, but I was even more miserable in 1978 and I thought those songs were great, then and now. Now if by "your latest" you meant the 1978 show, then as Emily Litella said, "never mind".

I am working on a countdown featuring one of those fade to nothing songs--that comes back on strong--I Can't Stand It by Eric Clapton. That title couldn't been my mantra when working as a DJ during the vinyl days--I Can't Stand It (those songs with 'fake' endings).

Early and pre-teens were buying 45s and listening to AM, while kids in the later-teens and young adults were buying albums and listening to FM. Thanks chrislc.

Tuesday, December 8, 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of the murder of John Lennon. Back on December 8, 1980, I read the interview John gave in Playboy magazine about his return to music on that Monday night, waking the next morning to the news that John had been shot and killed outside his NYC residence. To say I was shocked was an understatement--I recall going to work at the small radio station I worked at in Alabama and one other DJ and I just hung around the station sharing our appreciation for the music of the Beatles. It was a toss up as to which one of us would do a tribute show to John (and the Beatles) and Rich, the other DJ, being a few years older than me, at the time, ended up doing the show. We all know that John had two solo number ones: Whatever Gets You Through The Night in 1974 & Starting Over in 1980. However, he had one additional number one in Cash Box--here is that countdown for the week ending March 14, 1981--

Joe - Is the John Lennon show from 1980 or 1981 ?
I remember exactly what I was doing that evening 40 years ago - watching Monday Night Football. A big game - Miami vs Chicago - they both made the playoffs that year. After Howard Cosell made the announcement I immediately switched from the game to CNN. I can't believe it was 40 years ago.

I know that two friends of mine were watching MNF and heard Howard Cosell make that announcement, as well.

I was watching MNF, New England at Miami, I think maybe the previous poster conflated that memory with the HUGE 1985 Bears/Dolphins MNF game. What a shock that was. Cosell did a great job with it. I called my sister and then went in to work to get music ready for the morning show (I was MD). The news guys interviewed me for the noon news, though of course I had no great or even good insights (unlike now ha ha). I was up all night so they had someone substitute for me in PM Drive (no great loss ) I never knew until now that Celebration was from the Koran! That adds some irony to the song being played when the hostages came home. Hey Joe, Archive keeps asking me for money. Does any of that cash go to fund your countdown shows?

I remember when Howard Cosell interviewed John Lennon on Monday Night Football December 9, 1974. John Lennon's 2020 anniversary of his death means that he now has been gone for as many years as he lived - 40. In 2019 we had the same type of milestone with Elvis. He was 42 years old when he died, and it had been 42 years since his passing on August 16, 2019. John Lennon On MNF

I was really young when he died, but can somewhat remember my parents' reaction. It's very interesting to hear the AT40-era Cash Box charts in countdown form, and comparing the differences. The song that just vacated #1 in this show was still a week away from hitting #1 in Billboard. Thank you again for all the shows, Joe!

Hey Joe, Archive keeps asking me for money. Does any of that cash go to fund your countdown shows? My guess is it goes to Archive, so Joe and many others have a place to upload their creations to. I'm an Archive donor.

Chris, I became aware of archive.org before I began to post the countdowns on their site--but I have been a supporter since 2017. There are lots of great books, movies, etc. on their website. Another good show for us music fans is Crap from the Past. Joe
