What a way to kick off the countdown at #40!! It's top 5 of all time in my book! In the notes to a Sundazed box set of demos and album cuts Michael Fennelly released, he said that he was trying to write the perfect pop song. He came d**n close. Thanks, Joe! I have a show I did for the Cash Box chart from 7/11/70, in which I mention that Crabby Appleton was the name of a character from the cartoon, Tom Terrific. I wonder did Casey ever mention that?! Just checked my shows, and he didn't mention anything. Outside of him mentioning the name change from Stonehenge in the debut show, his intros and outros in the next two shows were very brief. Too bad that song appeared in only 3 AT40 shows, peaking at #36.

Now that the 50th anniversary of the first AT40 show has passed, it's time for a special Cash Box Countdown. Here is the Top 100 of 1968 from the December 28, 1968 issue of Cash Box magazine. Due to the length of the songs, this show has seven segments-- archive.org/details/new-01Over 100 songs featured on the chart plus a few Top 10's that missed the year end survey. Joe

Going back to the summer of 1969 (with apologies to Bryan Adams)--here are the Top 40 pop singles for the week ending June 14, 1969 via Cash Box Magazine. Songs from the musical Hair are represented at three spots on the chart, along with some one hit wonders and one of my favorite Beatles songs ever. archive.org/details/1969061401

The computer that I use to put the shows up onto the internet is being repaired this week--but I was able to find this countdown from July 15, 1967 via the Cash Box Magazine charts. There are two Top 40 hits from a group out of England that got their start during the Christmas season of 1962, three former #1 hits are on the chart, and the countdown begins with last Top 40 hit for the group that challenged the Beatles for the most hits during 1964.
Enjoy these songs from 53 years ago--
(oh yeah, you get the full length version of the song at #11)--
Joe

I am happy to report that the computer that puts the shows up on the web is back. So now here is the Top 40 pop singles from Cash Box magazine form the week ending July 9, 1966. The show features three of the biggest acts of the 20th century, the last Top 40 hit for a duo out of California and a Rolling Stones song that reached the Top 40 in Billboard but not in Cash Box--
Stay safe--
Joe

I guess we could say garage rock pretty much dominated that top 10! That week had to be the high point for the genre.

And now...the last countdown from 1965--for the week ending July 10, 1965 from Cash Box Magazine. It starts with a TV star and ends with the best known song for a band out of England. In between you'll hear from the King, the Fab Four, two songs from Herman's Hermits & the first Top 40 hit for a group out of Canada. By the way, this countdown is the last of the seventeen featuring hits of 1965 (16 regular weekly charts and the year end one).
Practice social distancing and sit 6 feet (or 2 meters) from your speakers--

Joe, I enjoy listening to these shows so much. They take me to my happy place. Listening right now to April '66. Congratulations on wrapping up '65.

AT40 celebrated it's 50th anniversary on the 4th of July week end, but just for fun here are the Top 40 hits from the week ending July 11, 1970 from Cash Box Magazine. If Watermark had struck a deal with Cash Box instead of Billboard, we would've heard two songs that made the Top 40 in Cash Box (but didn't make it into the Billboard Top 40). I recorded this show as my salute to Casey & Company--so that the extras are all the same ones heard on the original broadcast (with the exception of the Bill Cosby song). archive.org/details/1970071101As some of you might have suspected, it was thanks to Casey (and American Top 40) that I pursued a career in radio for nearly 15 years. And let me add that doing these countdowns have been a labor of love , in addition, to help me better appreciate the competitive nature of the pop music world of the 1960's.

Wow Joe there were quite a few different songs in that Hour #1. It seemed like there were about ten songs that weren't on the Casey show, which many of us have practically memorized by now.
