By mid-1965, the foreign acts almost out numbered the American acts in the Top 40, as this countdown from May 1965 will reveal. There are two songs by one British group in the Top 10 and one of the bonus songs is by a singer who hosted a game show in the 1970's. Here are the the Top 40 singles from Cash Box magazine for the week ending May 8, 1965.. Enjoy-- Joe
Love the new countdown, Joe. A welcome Saturday Night Treat!

While we look forward to the re-broadcast of the first AT40 show from July 1970, here are the Top 40 hits for the week ending May 9, 1970 from Cash Box Magazine. The song at the top of the chart didn't reach #1 in Billboard (although it did in Record World) and I accidentally used the 'live' version of the song at #25 instead of the studio version--although they sound very close.
Hope you enjoy the show--
Joe

Joe I hate you. I have had an Alice Long ear-worm for the last few days and it is your fault. I wonder how to cure an ear-worm. Maybe listening to it over and over again to develop an immunity? Help!

Sorry, Chris--may be you answered your own question--listen to Help! by the Beatles. I was reading about ear-worms, and apparently they can be a symptom of depression and/or anxiety. I have been starting a diet to lose weight, so maybe that is why I have been hearing Alice Long almost constantly for a week. I noticed something listening to a Spring 1967 show. Lawdy Miss Clawdy by the Buckinghams was a dead ringer for one of those Late 70s Teen Idol hits, like one by Shaun Cassidy or another I can't put my finger on. The production "values" are identical. My worm is Alice Long instead of those. So I do have that going for me!

After the Beatles dominated the American pop charts in April 1964, they have three songs on the countdown the last week of May, 1964. By the way two others acts have multiple hits in the Top 40, there are two by the Dave Clark 5 and two by the King of Rock n Roll. In addition, don't miss the song at #35 (a song that didn't crack the Top 40 in either Billboard or Record World). archive.org/details/1964053001

Looks like this makes 14 for '64 plus the Year End Countdown. Alice Long didn't cross my mind for two whole hours!

Going back to the first chart from June, 1965 (week ending June 5th) from Cash Box magazine--the Top 40 includes three songs by an English group that would have a dozen Top 10 hits in a row, 2 songs by another English group and the first hit by a Canadian band. Oh yeah, a few hits by American artists, as well.

Thanks Joe for this new show.
July is coming on soon and i have noticed there are no July shows available for 1965, 1966 and 1967 ( for 1964 we have July 11 and for 1968 and 1969 we have a show for the last week of July ).
Well , maybe i go too fast and you have already planned to offer us one of this missing shows ( if recorded , of course ).

With the 50th anniversary of the first AT40 broadcast taking place this week end--here is the last of the 1970 countdowns from Cash Box Magazine, featuring the first six months of the year. Here is the countdown from the week ending June 13, 1970; and about half the songs would be heard on the first show. By the way, as we chart watchers know, the movement of songs would slow down considerably during the 1970's in comparison to the 1960's.

Take out the Beatles and hippies references and it might be a brand new song.

It's top 5 of all time in my book! In the notes to a Sundazed box set of demos and album cuts Michael Fennelly released, he said that he was trying to write the perfect pop song. He came d**n close. Thanks, Joe!

Thanks, Joe! I have a show I did for the Cash Box chart from 7/11/70, in which I mention that Crabby Appleton was the name of a character from the cartoon, Tom Terrific. I wonder did Casey ever mention that?!
