An Austrian extra: Supermax
Born in Vienna on 1/14/1949, Kurt Hauenstein belongs to the rare species of Austrian pop musicians who have also been able to celebrate relevant successes outside the German-speaking world. The trained jeweller didn´t have a simple relationship with his homeland. "The young people here don´t even know that I exist.", he said in 2008. In that year he was awarded the Silver Medal of Merit of Vienna and the "Amadeus" for his life´s work - but his worldwide success had led him elsewhere. He broke sales records, his records were bought over eight million times. His breakthrough came in 1978 with the song "Lovemachine", which is now considered a disco classic:
In addition to the world-famous "Lovemachine", Supermax was also considered a pioneer of relaxed dancefloor groove and a pioneer of genre mixing. As one of the first white musicians, he combined rock elements with sounds from the pool of African music. And as the first white musician he played at the "Reggae Sun Splash" in Jamaica in 1983. With his fusion of reggae, funk, rock and pop he also toured behind the Iron Curtain or in South Africa in the 1980s. Kurt Hauenstein started his first musical steps at the age of 16. He played in the formation "Charly Ryder" with Karl Ratzer. At various productions and concerts he performed with greats of Austro-Pop, among others. In the studio he also worked with Frank Farian.
In 2008 Kurt Hauenstein gave one of his rare interviews. Being asked about the name "Supermax", he said: "I was totally in the black scene, and they often said: "To the max". "Max" for maximum. To increase that, I thought to myself: Supermax, nothing goes over it. Suddenly I was Mr. Max. But in America, the name was cool."
"And how did the success of "Lovemachine" change your life ?" "You don´t know what to do. I looked at the bank statement and didn´t understand what all the zeros were for. When I spent the money, the next one was already there. The environment changes more than you do. Friends think you´re no longer one of them. And then you look where the rich are. But you don´t belong there either."
In the night from 3/20 to 3/21/2011 Kurt Hauenstein died completely unexpectedly of heart failure.
Here´s a ballad from Supermax from his album "Something In My Heart" - Living In A World:

A few changes since 2016 for me... Now with 28 favorites:
* "Fortress Around Your Heart" and "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down" move up to 5 star songs. * "Alive & Kicking" and "Who's Zoomin' Who" get added to my list as 4 star songs. * "Wrap Her Up" gets dropped.
My Top 28 songs from the 11/13/76 countdown... and I'm using my "old school" 5, 4 1/2 & 4 star rating system: 5 stars: Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright), Disco Duck*, The Rubberband Man, Don't Fear The Reaper, Magic Man, Lowdown, Shake Your Booty, It's A Long Way There, Livin' Thing 4 1/2 stars: The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald, Love So Right, Fernando, More Than A Feeling, Nights Are Forever Without You, Play That Funky Music, You Don't Have To Be A Star To Be In My Show, That'll Be The Day, Hot Line
4 stars: Rock'n'Me, If You Leave Me Know, Do You Feel Like We Do, Beth, Nadia's Theme, You Are The Woman, She's Gone, A Fifth Of Beethoven, You Make Me Feel Like Daning, Love Me
* If I'm going old school with my ratings, I'll feature one of my first video picks as my 70s Pick Hit. The bass line that's oh so slightly tardy plus the way cool horns make "Disco Duck" a way cool tune for me (ducks for cover... ... get it, ducks for cover... ): If there's a station out there that would play "Running Up That Hill" back to back with "Disco Duck", you'd have a lifelong listener.

50 years Sesame Street
This street has opened up the world to millions of children - in "Sesame Street" colorful monsters and people have been living together in brown sandstone houses in New York for 50 years. On 11/10/1969, the first episode of the most successful children´s show in the world was broadcast in the USA. At that time little Sally was the first visitor: "Everything happens here, you´ll love it", the girl was told and met all sorts of characters one after the other: Bibo strolled through the Sesame Street with a springy step - a bit dizzy, a bit jumpy. Ernie sang in the bathtub, his friend Bert was as nasty as ever. And Kermit explained letters that the crumb monster ate behind his back.
It´s been a long time, but it´s also a reason to celebrate with a "celebration"-edition:
11/9/85:
A-ha - Take On Me Eddie Murphy - Party All The Time Ray Parker Junior - Girls Are More Fun Starship - We Built This City The Hooters - And We Danced
An Austrian extra: Starmaniacs
For the anniversary of the ORF casting show "Starmania" a song from 2003, which set a special record. The first Austrian single that had already achieved gold status in Austria before its actual release (it reached platinum in Austria). Here are the Starmaniacs (first season) with "Tomorrow´s Heroes":

[...] Jeff Lynne releases new music and goes on tour again: "Out Of Nowhere" is the name of the new work. Sounds like 1987 - and Jeff Lynne meant it as a compliment. Timeless in the best sense. Also in 2019 Jeff Lynne shakes the typical light-footed melodies out of his sleeve. "Even if it sounds like it always does," says Jeff Lynne ironically, "even if I use my own melodies, no problem - as long as he steals from me." The current line-up would be the best ELO has ever had, enthuses the 71-year-old about his current fellow players Richard Tandy on piano and Steve Jay on drums. "Today, I´m lucky they let me play along. No, seriously: There has never been a better ELO," says Lynne in a good mood at the press conference in London. From "Out of Nowhere", the already 14th ELO studio album, features 10 songs written before and after the past tours, which Lynne has now recorded again after almost three decades without tours. Lynne is a worker who has never shed his North English "working class" access. Whenever he´s home, he goes to the studio. "Not every day, I´m not at home every day," says Lynne. "But when I get home, I regularly go to the studio to work." "From Out of Nowhere" shows an expert who makes everything himself. Guitars, bass, piano, drums, keyboards and of course all solo and harmony vocals come from Lynne himself. He hardly hears any new music, says Lynne. "I´m still communicating with Roy, Tom or George in my head," he confesses. "I might walk past a car and that´s where good music comes out. Then I´ll just stand there and record this. But I don´t listen to any new music or radio." For him there is only one motto anyway: keep trying, keep trying, keep trying.

11/17/79 This is Casey Kasem on American Top 40 in Hollywood, well now, I have the hit by the group who perform on the most expensive stage set in the history of rock, a sixty foot wide spaceship that cost them more than three hundred thousand dollars, picture this if you will, you're sitting in a concert hall, the lights are out, and suddenly there's a sound of space music starting softly, but building louder and louder into an exciting crescendo, and as you look toward the, dimly lit stage, you can just barely make out something that looks like a space vehicle, the top of it begins to rise, and inside being lifted up on a huge platform, is the group you came to see, the lights on the bottom and the top of the spaceship, go on, the lasers begin to shoot out in all directions from the ship, lighting up the entire hall, fire is shooting from the back of the ship, and a rear screen projector is filled with laser lights, spelling out messages to the crowd, and this is how the Electric Light Orchestra begins their concert, the cost, three hundred thousand dollars just to build the set, the most expensive set for a rock group, we know of, and now, here is ELO, at #37 in the countdown, The Electric Light Orchestra debut with, Confusion... Rainbow Connection - Kermit Jim Henson (I remember watching The Muppet Movie 40 years ago when it was first released in theaters!) Dammed If I Do - The Alan Parsons Project Tusk - Fleetwood Mac Dirty White Boy - Foreigner Heartache Tonight - Eagles Babe - Styx Pop Muzik - 'M' Take the Long Way Home - Supertramp You're Only Lonely - J.D. Souther We Don't Talk Anymore - Cliff Richard I Need a Lover - John Cougar Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough - Michael Jackson Rise - Herb Alpert Do That to Me One More Time - Captain & Tennille I'll Never Love This Way Again - Dionne Warwick 11/12/83 (My 11th birthday chart) Uptown Girl - Billy Joel Say Say Say - Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson Burning Down the House - Talking Heads King of Pain - The Police The Safety Dance - Men Without Hats One Thing Leads to Another - The Fixx Cum on Feel the Noize - Quiet Riot True - Spandau Ballet Heart and Soul - Huey Lewis & the News Say It Isn't So - Daryl Hall & John Oates Modern Love - David Bowie Crumblin' Down - John Cougar Mellencamp Delirious - Prince P.Y.T. ^ Normally I agree with trekkielo and his picks but "Confusion" getting a video pick?! Jeff Lynne is right when he sings in the first chorus, "Confusion... it's such a terrible shame..." . They should have selected "Last Train To London" as the third single rather than "Confusion". And LTTL should have made it way higher than #39. My Top 33 songs from the 11/12/83 countdown (song titles only, absolute faves in bold):Top 10: All Night Long, Uptown Girl, Say Say Say, Total Eclipse Of The Heart, One Thing Leads To Another, Cum On Feel The Noize, Making Love Out Of Nothing At All, Suddenly Last Summer #11-20: All of 'em! Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair), True, Love Is A Battlefield, Modern Love, Heart & Soul, Tonight I Celebrate My Love, Say It Isn't So, PYT (Pretty Young Thing), Crumblin' Down, King Of Pain*#21-30: If Anyone Falls, Church Of The Poison Mind, Burning Down The House, Send Her My Love, Tender Is The Night, Ain't Nobody, In A Big Country#31-40: Mirror Man, Major Tom (Coming Home), The Safety Dance, Queen Of The Broken Hearts, Souls, Just Got Lucky, Twist Of Fate, My Town * For being mean to trekkielo in my intro, that must make me... King of Pain... King of Pain... I'll always be King of Pain... : My Top 23 songs from the 11/17/79 countdown:Top 10: Still, Dim All The Lights, Babe, Heartache Tonight, Tusk, Please Don't Go, Pop Muzik#11-20: Good Girls Don't, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Send One Your Love, Take The Long Way Home, If You Remember Me #21-30: Ladies Night, I'll Never Love This Way, Escape (The Pina Colada Song), Cool Change, Dreaming #31-40: Victim Of Love, I Need A Lover, Cruisin', Dammed If I Do*, Dirty White Boy, We Don't Talk Anymore * Here's the video pick trekkielo should have selected... The Alan Parsons Project. Way cool horns plus luscious orchestration plus an awesome, almost etheral ending = a song which should have peaked way higher than #27: So... will trekkielo reply to this thread with a for picking on "Confusion", or will I receive a like for selecting "Dammed If I Do" since it's from one of his favorite groups ? Or both? Or neither?

^ "Rainbow Connection" for me falls in the "okay" category. I wonder if someone else than a Muppet sang the song that it would get some recurrent airplay today. But there's another reason why that song is just okay with me so to explain, it's time for another 80sat40fan Flashback ... It was July of 1984. I had my first part-time job as an usher/concession stand clerk in a cinema, and we had "The Muppets Take Manhattan" premiere. I lived in an area with lots of young kids, and it seemed like every little twerp around me saw that movie the first few weeks it was out. That meant that each little kiddie had his or her own pop, popcorn and candy... which also meant cleaning up those spilled pops, popcorns and candy after each showing. UGH! On top of that... hearing Miss Piggy sing, "I'll Gonna Always Love You" over and over and over again didn't help. Sure, the Muppet Babies are adorable the first time you see them but hearing "ma-ma, da-da, poop poop, chihuahua" every two hours got a little grating at times . So, with an AT40 extra, here's the song by The Muppet Babies that drove me nuts during the summer of '84... This is the spew that comes from my fingers when we have a snow day in metro Detroit with 9 inches of snow on the ground more than a month before the official start of winter! I am sure this thread will get back to normal very soon. If seminolefan is his usual self, he'll post his favorites today between 10am and 2pm Eastern time. He is like clockwork with his Tuesday midday posts here .
