2/18/84:Billy Joel - An Innocent ManChristine McVie - Got A Hold On Me Paul McCartney - So Bad Re-Flex - The Politics Of Dancing The Pointer Sisters - Automatic The Viennese WaltzThe waltz is one of the oldest dances. The first waltzes were danced in Germany and Austria in the 13th century. The style was immediately adopted by other nations, which developed their own forms styles of dancing. The style we know today was developed in the suburbs of Vienna and in Austria´s mountain regions. During the 17th century it was performed and danced in the ballrooms of the Habsburg courts. Towards the end of the 18th century, the former peasant dance was also accepted by the upper class. Despite its popularity, the dance was not completely recognized in the nation. Many masters of dance perceived waltz as a danger to their profession. Its basic step could be learned in a very short time, unlike other court dances, such as the minuet, which took a considerable amount of time to learn and master. Before the waltz, people danced around each other with little or no contact. As the dance grew in popularity, it was criticized morally for its tight posture and quick turns. Religious leaders considered it vulgar and sinful. The dance was criticized to the point that people were threatened with death if they danced it. After some time, established artists noticed the quality and appeal of the waltz. Some of them were Franz Schubert, Johann Strauss father and later the famous waltz composer, Johann Strauss son. The dance became more and more popular and led to the court building more and more dance halls to accommodate the craze. It became a standard accompaniment to noble events in Vienna and is still considered one of the most popular dance styles in the world. In 1864 Johann Strauss son composed exclusive dance music and pushed the waltz genre forward to even greater popularity, earning him the title "King of the Waltz". Three years later, the famous song "On the beautiful Blue Danube", also known as the "Danube Waltz" was composed, and is still known today as the unofficial Austrian anthem. And the following edition also allows you to dance: 2/18/84:Elton John - I Guess That´s Why They Call It The Blues ( Viennese waltz) K.C. - Give It Up (cha cha cha) Madonna - Holiday (disco fox) Matthew Wilder - Break My Stride (cha cha cha) Nena - 99 Luftballons (jive) Time for an extra: Right Said FredRight Said Fred was formed in 1989 by two brothers, Fred and Richard Fairbrass. In 1990, Fred and Richard co-wrote the song "I´m Too Sexy" with guitarist Rob Manzoli. They borrowed money and to keep the costs down, they did the recordings at night in a recording studio in Ealing, which had already filed for bankruptcy. The final recordings were made at the Red Bus Studio in London in early 1991. "I´m Too Sexy" and also the song "Swan", which later made it onto the debut album "Up", were initially rejected by all record companies. Nevertheless, the two brothers didn´t give up and followed their instinct, knowing that they had something very valuable in their hands.
"I´m Too Sexy" that starts purely with Richard´s voice "I´m too sexy for my love, too sexy for my love, love´s going to leave me" was something very different from the other tracks at that time. "I´m Too Sexy" was sassy, funny and it showed the independence of the band. The two brothers definitely didn´t want to follow a trend at the moment. Fred recalls the passion they had for the song, "We knew that what we had recorded was absolutely new and different from anything else. We just didn´t know how incredibly successful this song would become."
As with all success stories, when you think nothing is going to happen, fate was suddenly on their side. The band´s manager, who was still a teenager at the time and a firm believer in the act, managed to get the song first to DJ Gary Crowley and then to the producer of the Simon Bates Morning Show on BBC Radio 1. Simon played the song and the rest is history.
Right Said Fred now plunged into a world tour, spending most of 1992 on the road promoting their album "Up," which was released that year. The album achieved 7 million sales worldwide and was at #1 in England. It continued the domino effect of their success. The 2nd album, "Sex and Travel", was highly praised in the American press and it achieved almost one million sales. And already the band was back on the road for promotion and live performances. In the same year, the two brothers wrote the song "Stick It Out", which was used for a comic show and again became a Top 5 hit for Right Said Fred. Here are Right Said Fred performing "Hands Up (For Lovers)": from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

2/21/87:Benjamin Orr - Stay The Night Chico DeBarge - Talk To Me Lionel Richie - Ballerina Girl The Jets - You Got It AllWang Chung - Let´s Go Ö3 Podcast Awards 2023The task was to prevail against 1,300 individual Austrian podcasts that were nominated: Now they have been determined, the winners of the 3rd Ö3 Podcast Awards. First place went to the "Land schafft Leben" ("Land creates life") association with its nutrition podcast "Wer nichts weiß, muss alles essen" ("If you don´t know anything, you have to eat everything."). Last year, podcaster Maria Fanninger and podcaster Hannes Royer landed in 3rd place, this year they win the Ö3 Podcast Award. With their podcast, the two association founders try to create awareness for food produced in Austria. The winners of the Ö3 Podcast Award were determined by the Ö3 editorial team and a jury. Together they found the best 20 podcasts from Austria - and were able to identify some trends. First and foremost: Business and finance podcasts are currently very much in demand - not only 2nd place belongs to this category, but this genre also secured several places in the Top 20. Furthermore, there is a lot of movement in the Austrian podcast landscape - this is shown by the many new podcasts that have found a place in the Top 20 this year, according to the jury. What´s also fixed is that there´s nothing that doesn't exist - from podcasts about births ("Birth Stories") to podcasts about death ("And Out"), almost every topic is now covered. And to go with it, a "greatest hits"-edition: 2/21/87:Bon Jovi - Livin´ On A Prayer Europe - The Final Countdown Genesis - Land Of Confusion Janet Jackson - Let´s Wait AwhileMadonna - Open Your Heart Time for an extra: ChampagneChampagne was a Dutch pop quartet (mixed doubles in the style of ABBA) that had some hits in Europe between 1976 and 1981. The band was produced in Rotterdam. Their melodic sound was in line with the concept of Europop at the time, was more white easy listening and folk than black influences. Mainly Dutch pop and rock veteran Wally Tax (together with composer Martin Duiser) wrote the mostly soft pop songs for the mixed doubles. To vary the obvious musical reference to ABBA, at least visually, the quartet was initially given a Roaring Twenties nostalgia look. Champagne appeared mostly nostalgic-elegant: Pinstripes and hat veils formed a clear contrast to then-current pop outfits such as disco glamour or glam rock glitter. At the end of 1976, the first (and most successful) single "Rock And Roll Star" was released first in the Benelux countries, then in early 1977 in many countries around the world. A musical travesty, as only the Europop of the 1970s could produce: The longing, sobbing harmonica intro is followed by fast, folk-like chords in 2/8 time. The build-up with the rising chorus is strongly reminiscent of ABBA´s mega hit "S.O.S.". The song was completely unsuitable for the discos, it was simply not danceable. Nevertheless, the calculation to orientate themselves on successful sound patterns worked out: "Rock And Roll Star" reached #2 in the Netherlands. The song made it to #83 on the Billboard Hot 100. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

We need more piano and keyboards in tunes these days! Plus, here's an interesting fact... While Eric Carmen is alive in well at the age of 73, four of Force MD's five original members (who first hit AT40 14 years after Eric first did) are deceased. There's an episode of VH1's "Behind The Music" waiting to happen. Here are the single edits of "Tender Love" and "All By Myself": BONUS! Debuting at #99 on the 3/6/76 Billboard Hot 100 is "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" by... Terry Bradshaw ?!?! Yes, Terry Bradshaw of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Fox Sports fame. Who would have thought he has a halfway decent voice?:

3/8/86: Atlantic Starr - Secret LoversCharlie Sexton - Beats So Lonely Electric Light Orchestra - Calling America Stevie Nicks - I Can´t Wait The Cars - I´m Not The One Dancing StarsAustria´s most successful event format is entering its 15th season. Ten celebrities and their professional dance partners have already had to undergo rigorous training in order to present themselves to the three-person jury and the TV audience every week from now on. Maria Angelini-Santner, Balázs Ekker and a guest juror who changes every week will decide whether the participants in the ORF1 dance event receive one or even ten points. The experienced " Dancing Stars" fixed jury gets celebrity support every week - at the kick-off, model and actress Barbara Meier takes her place in the third jury chair. And here´s my " dance"-edition of the week: 3/8/86:Miami Sound Machine - Conga (samba) Sade - The Sweetest Taboo (samba) Survivor - Burning Heart (foxtrot) The Bangles - Manic Monday (cha cha cha) Whitney Houston - How Will I Know (jive) Time for an extra: Sailor
In a Parisian nightclub, the owner required his house band to perform in sailor costumes as a reference to a sailor who had saved his life a few years earlier. This tradition lasted until the early 1970s, when the club "Le Matelot" burned to the ground. Phil Pickett, keyboarder, and George Kajanus, singer, two "survivors" of this club band, then moved back to London. They hired Henry Marsh as a keyboardist and Grant Serpell as a drummer and formed their own band: Sailor. Already in 1974 the band gets a record contract and releases the album "Sailor". Initially, the band goes on tour in England together with Kiki Dee and Cockney Rebel. At the same time, Sailor promoted their first single, which was called "Sailor" just like the band and the album, intensively in the Netherlands, where they always had an open ear for new bands, since there was an "intense fight" between the official radio stations and the still existing pirate stations broadcasting from ships on the North Sea.
In 1975 Sailor released their second album and when "A Glass Of Champagne" entered the British charts, it would only take a short time for the band to make it into the Austrian charts as well. Finally we got to know the Nickelodeon, because of course this special band could not be missing on TV.
Sailor´s record company was so clever that they first released "Girls Girls Girls" as a single in the Netherlands, where the band had long been one of the big names. Thus, by the end of 1975, the band was in the UK charts with "A Glass Of Champagne" and in the Dutch charts with "Girls Girls Girls." The presenters, whose music selection at that time was not yet made by a computer, but in many cases by the presenter, didn´t agree much. The only thing that was clear was that this band was simply hot. So many people chose another song from the successful album "Trouble".
Always a topic in this context was the Nickelodeon. This instrument even got its own track on the album with "The Old Nickelodeon Sound". Besides the specially made Nickelodeon, their trademark, mandolins, accordion, military drum and glockenspiel were part of the extended instrumentation.
Sailor´s live concerts were famous for their theatrical status. The stage decoration was reminiscent of a port city, and the pale light of a street lamp and palm trees completed their image as singing sailors and restless globetrotters.
Here are Sailor with "A Glass Of Champagne", "Girls Girls Girls" and - fitting for the start of "Dancing Stars" with the samba "La Cumbia":
